Great video again. I had this problem too when I would polish Testor's wet look clear. Polishing up to a 12,000 grit helps alot, and alternating directions of sanding with each grit helps too. So sand horizontal with the 2000, then vertical with the 4000, etc. Also, multiple applications of a dedicated scratch remover helps with the haziness and isn't as abrasive as the rubbing or polishing compounds. The rotary tool to polish turned out great! High risk high reward

Great video! I use micro mesh and sand it down to the highest grit it came in the box. Then using a dremel rotary tool with your polishing buffer at 5000 rpm, meguairs scratch x 2.0, ultimate Polish then hand waxed with ultimate wax!

Im curious if you ever found out what grit the scratch X is equivalent to? I just finished wet sanding my model using 6000, 8000, 12000 as the final 3 of 9 sand papers i used. Followed the sanding with the scratch X but didnt see any difference from the before and after applying the scratch X.

Ive always used a polishing pad you could buy at the local automotive store which is around 4" in diameter and put it on a dewalt 20v drill and polish it. Never had an issue. I use automotive paint and clear for bodyshops and the 3M step 2 polish. Using automotive paint and clear it can withstand the speed of a power drill. Obviously i dont go full throttle.

I've tried all Japanese ones except "fine molds" and all western compounds including automotive brands. You will have to purchase in Japan I use hobbysearch but HLJ has discounted shipping. FYI.. EMS shipping is 3days and about 12-15dollars which is great compared to micro-marts ridiculous shipping prices!

I do gunpla and I appreciate that you are showing how to fix mistakes! Most tutorials always show how it works perfectly I guess human nature is to hide mistakes. Have u ever considered doing a Gundam? Lots of US modelers have misconception with snap kits... I dare to say bandai produces molds as well as tamiya and possibly even better tolerances. I'm starting to think the negativity with gundams aren't because it's snap kit but you have 500 parts to paint separately, seems to scare the old timers. ;(

I’ve seen your other video series where you do an entire build. You use Valejo for some models and Zero Paints for other models. Either way, those aren’t acrylic paints, right? I’m fairly new to airbrushing model bodies (used to use Testors Enamel painting cans) but every single time I use an acrylic paint, regardless of brand, the paint will always chip at some point in the build. Even after glossing the crap out of it, it will still peel somewhere. Sanded, primer painted, sanded for paint grip, prepped, painted in many light coats... I have never gotten a clean build using the process you always use. The only difference is that you don’t use acrylic paints. Any thoughts as to what I’m not doing right? As mentioned, I used to always use enamel sprays, sometimes not even laying down primer first. I decided to try airbrushing bodies since I can work on smaller parts without blasting the pieces across the garage floor.

"Wipe it off" means.. just wiping it off with towel? doesn't it(compound or wax) need to be washed out with water? Is this done after applying clear coat or before clear coat. Sorry for rushing out of questions, and Thank you for the video clip! this was really helpful.
@TheScalemodelingChannel
@TheScalemodelingChannel 7 жыл бұрын
Whipe it off means just whiping it off with a towel, yes. it can be washed, but does not need to if its not in the panel lines, i would preffer to do this after i finish the final wax, then wash it. polishing is done after clear.

i dont know understand why did u use 2000 sanding papar to sand off the shiny effect?
@TheScalemodelingChannel
@TheScalemodelingChannel 7 жыл бұрын
Because the surface was uneven and bumpy, with the 2000 grit i sanded the bumps out and made the paint smooth.

What is orange peel?
@dcinhere
@dcinhere 8 жыл бұрын
+Tylooshi Hard to explain, easier to show. But I will give it a go. Orange peel is typically the result of improper painting technique, and is caused by the quick evaporation of thinner, incorrect spray gun setup (e.g., low air pressure or incorrect nozzle), spraying the paint at an angle other than perpendicular, or applying excessive paint. When the paint drys it resembles the skin of an orange, thus the name orange peel.

Still enjoyed and liked the video, but the steps to polish 2k by hand end with machine polishing. But agree that with the difference in the finish, that machine polishing is a no brainer. More questioning the choice of title.
@TheScalemodelingChannel
@TheScalemodelingChannel 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t agree, The video is about doing the polishing by hand. In the end you see what i achived by doing it by hand. Then i mention i was not satisfied in doing it that way. And talk about how i ended up doing it with the machine. Not showing any of the process what so ever. Just what i ended up with. To compare to the hand polishing.

Yes it ticks the boxes to match what you said but that's not what I mean. It would be like having a video called making a car into a boat. Going through all the steps then concluding a boat would be better rendering everything that proceeded it not as useful.

3000 is not a high enough grit to get the results that you are looking for. You need to go up to at least 12,000 to get every single scratch out before polishing. Also wet sanding in a circular motion as upposed to sanding from left to righ or up and down will result in far less scratches being left behind.

I tried doing everything you did in the video and it looks like shit. I don't have 3000 grit but i tried finishing with 2000. I even have the same products. scratch x, polish, and wax. All the scratches are visible and there is hardly any shine :/
@TheScalemodelingChannel
@TheScalemodelingChannel 7 жыл бұрын
The problem is that finishing with 2000 grit is not a high enough grit. Even after i finished in 3000 grit wich you can see at the end of the video i am not happy and i moved on the machine polishing.

I'm asking you because I'm in same boat. I have a huge model car painted with 2k clear coat. I have sanded down with 2000 to get rid of orange peel. Then I polished and waxed it but I'm still not happy with end results not to speak of the car black so its even more complicated
