I was told you were supposed to leave a stick stuck in the ground next to it so someone else didn’t dig up your scat? True, false, optional?

Yes, it is considered a courtesy move in high-use sites without privies to leave a stick upright in the covered hole. We would say this is very location dependent though.

It's not the best place to poop. Animals will dig it up and eat it because they identify it as protein. But when you have to go you have got to go.

There are portable toilets available on the market with bags that you attach to poop in.
