What's the best place to point a side firing woofer at in a room? Have a question you want to ask Paul? www.psaudio.com/ask-paul/
I am getting close to publishing my memoir! It's called 99% True and it is chock full of adventures, debauchery, struggles, heartwarming stories, triumphs and failures, great belly laughs, and a peek inside the high-end audio industry you've never known before.
I plan a few surprises for early adopters, so go to www.paulmcgowan.com and add your name to the list of interested readers. There's an entire gallery of never before seen photos too.

Interesting subject that I have often wondered about with side firing woofers. I have never owned a set as I didn't like the concept of a single side firing woofer, but the dual set up I think would sound amazing. Would love to hear it one day.

Dear old Arnie nailed it !! I had no idea those AN speakers had twin woofers... and I think Paul might have missed the prime purpose as to WHY Arnie did this ... by placing the two woofers back to back ( obviously in phase ) the mechanical vibrations cancel out and the cabinet is balanced as far as surface vibration.. I've been on about this for ages .. Paul for your next speaker model you MUST use twin woofers ... but beware .. a larger than normal listening room is recommended..!

5:00 Sound (wave) diffracts around immediately after come out of driver even the very small wave front (this's why you can hear ringtones of smartphone's tiny speakers while being outdoor). Moving of listener head differs the intensity (loudness) of that sound. Ears won't be missing the 1st strikes of sound directly coming from drivers.

Ok so when i look at my side firing speakers from my couch the bass should be at the left side for the left speaker. And for the right speaker the bass should point to the right?

I fire my dual subwoofers at 90 degrees to my speakers, about a foot back. Works great in my music room and better than any other position. I've tried most everything.

Ever tried firing them straight up and crossing them over high? Mine run to around 400hz and then I cross them over to compression drivers in karlson couplers with a front firing midbass for voice fundamentals. sounds great and not in your face

I have a pair of JBL L7s, 4-way with 6 ohm impedance, 91dB sensitivity and crossover points at 180, 900 and 4K Hz. The woofers are side-mount and the low, mid and high frequency drivers mount mirror imaged. The user manual doesn't indicate how the speakers should be placed and there are no L & R indications on the speakers themselves. I have the woofer sides pointing inwards facing each other without knowing whether they are meant to be like that...

low frequencies take feet and yards to complete one cycle, and push a lot of air waves, so facing them toward each other makes them cancel each other out to a large degree. also, facing them rearward toward the wall or corner makes them bounce wavelengths off the wall and back into itself, also cancelling some frequencies and muddying the sound. it will sound boomy, yes, but not as clear.

This confuses me. I have the Infinity Overture one. These also have woofers on the side of the speaker. Both on the left side of the speaker. So my right channel is on the inside and the left channel is on the outside. Did they sell me the wrong speakers our should I put one upside down?

It's not that easy. Place them wherever it sounds right. Many different variables will affect how subs and every speaker sounds. The (subwoofer crawl) is a great way to figure it out. But if the subs are in the speaker cabinet you kinda have to point them away at the walls.
@greebuh
@greebuh 4 жыл бұрын
You really didn't pay attention to the question. The speakers have built in side firing subs on the side of the speakers. sub crawl isn't going to any good in that situation.

Utter BS : woofers , depending on size , baffle width (mind the baffle step)and frequency will radiate spherically as a monopole no matter what direction you point them , even upward or downward . At low enough frequencies , they are truly undirectional , or omnidirectional .The only difference that can be made is the proportion of direct sound to indirect sound . If your woofer points to the side wall at less than a meter distance , it will contribute to direct sound . If you turn the cabinet with woofers pointing inwards AND the distance is now more than a meter from the side wall , you will get more indirect sound .
@disnaess

I don't think it's appropriate to say 'utter BS' here. If things were as simple as you tell here, nobody would watch such videos 'cause everybody would have found the holy grail by then. Pls show some respect and express yourself like a being with adequate amount of intelligence. Thx.

@@disnaess I am sorry , but I have the same amount of respect for people who deny evolution and flat earthers . This a basic concept of simple physics , nothing complex at all . If you have the nerve to call your self an expert and make videos about this , you better get this simple thing right . If you have an argument against my line of reasoning , I will be happy to entertain it . There is no holy grail here . It's simply a non event where you point the woofer (if rolled off early enough). Speaker manufacturers have known this for ages , that's why you have speakers with woofers pointing downwards and upwards and sideways , as the application needs it

@@gerritgovaerts8443 I played BWV 731 _Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier_ (Piet Kee Plays Bach and Buxtehude, Chandos CHAN0501 ) with my speakers facing each other and compared with them pointing away from each other. The loudness of the pedal notes were quite different. Facing each other reduced the volume; facing away from each other was not distinguishable from their normal position facing forward. I note that Paul did not proclaim Holy Testimony, deny evolution or claim Earth flat; that's _your_ "utter bullshit". I would appear to have empirically confirmed Paul's observation.
