When I was a boot in the marine corps a few years prior, my seniors never saw me smile. Not once for the first 6-9 months I was in the fleet. Whenever they were hazing me or my buddies I kept a straight face no matter how tired or enraged I was. I thought to myself I would never give someone else the satisfaction of fucking with me. Being mindful and aware of how you feel withought always expressing it can be helpful, nobody needs to know how you think or feel and in truth most really dont care. There are those close to you who have earned that right but be careful. Dont bottle up your emotions either because it will become an issue, just consider when you should and shouldt act upon them withought any feelings towards your descions. Just be present and follow your virtues. Hope this helps someone

Learned to “normal face” in the military. Plenty of really nice guys that would take your weekend away from you or give you “extras” and wait to see if you give some kind of reaction to make your life worse. I used to normal face that shit all the time. People don’t seem to fuck with you so much if they can’t tell what you’re thinking or how you perceive them.

Alternately: I recently worked alongside someone half my age, and I don’t think I ever heard him laugh, occasionally I’d get him to crack a smile, and his voice had zero intonation. It was like he was mentally slow or on a lot of meds. He was good at eye contact though, which means a lot.

My whole life I was told that I don't express enough emotion and nowadays it's "I have a very stoic facial expression" so I was kind of embarrassed and ashamed of myself. But lately, I've been embracing my natural "normal face" and this video really helped me to accept that it's actually a strength to have rather than something I want to change just because it may be intimidating to others or for whatever reason. Thanks Jocko!!

The part about kids falling down and or scuffing a knee is critical to our whole society. Weakness is very much taught from a young age. If you tell a child that it's okay and sometimes life hurts, I guarantee you they will stop crying. And it's the best thing you can ever do for someone to teach them to endure the struggles of life in good cheer.

This was useful to me because when something goes very wrong in the plan, I would get hyper aggressive and angry which means I am relentlessly taking action to form a solution which is good, but at the same time my anger shows which can result in some misunderstandings when my team thinks I'm insulting them or calling them a word of profanity when I just say it in general. Ideally, I would be hyper aggressive, but not show my anger to avoid unnecessary miscommunications.

This is a vGREAT video! As a cop and at the time supervisor, I went back into lock-up to help an officer who had just brought in an arrest. This guy was being compliant, but still you need to stay in the game. This guy looked at me and after a long pause said, "You look tired". He said it plainly and without threat, which was almost more scary. I immediately took inventory of myself, my posture, facial expression - and learned from that lesson. SWAT team, on the road, BJJ training, lifting..I remember that mans words and try to always look composed, calm and ready. I'm sure I'm not always "on" but I try to give that impression. Learn those lessons and remember them. Violent offenders look for "tired, unconnected" people for victims...Cheers!

I love the concept!!! I am working to get better at it in more situations. I would think the goal is more of a fake it until you make it concept. So eventually you really are that calm and confident on the inside. If you run into a stressful situation or obstacles to a goal then you get to the point where like water running downhill hill you just automatically begin thinking of alternate means of getting there. Then the outdo match the inside. The ultimate goal. 😎

A lot of people do things to people for a reaction like bullies but if you show no face then your giving them no food to feed off, they will try harder but as long as you don't feed them they will move on , i would of thought poker players do this often so as to not show the opposition there hand as it is the same thing, i think 90% of communication between people starts with watching facial expressions, it let's you know if your on the right track to either carry on or to stop and change your approach.

One night I was going to meet my friend at the gym and I was walking to my car across the street. It was dark and when I was stepping off the road onto the sidewalk there was this miniature curb before the normal curb that I hadn't seen. I hit my toe onto the mini curb and I planted hard onto the sidewalk. I first landed on my knee, when the palm of my hand, and finally my eyebrow hit a third curb. I cut open my eyebrow (no bleeding strangely). I don't usually cry when I get injured but I hit so hard that I had this very strong impulse to cry and, to my amazement, the feeling quickly past. I realized right there that if someone was around to say "Oh my gosh, are you OK?" and show other signs of concern, I would have started crying. I'd always remembered how interesting that was and so Echo's story about his son's fall totally makes sense. FYI- After the fall I considered going home but then I was like "No, I'm meeting my friend at the gym." I got up and with a limp in my step and a huge swollen eyebrow, I went to the gym. I did power walking with my friend and it was hard to keep up with her (my friend is a superb power walker) and I was afraid I might cause more damage to my knee. But my knee actually got better. I think the power walking actually helped. Walking it off is an actual thing I guess.

I went to the same small high school from 1st to 12th grade and me and my friends basically from 1st to 12 grade would play a game we called "straight face contest" I have no idea who started it where it started when or why 😂 but all the time in school sports anything we would walk up to eachother in random times and just say "straight face contest ready go" and the person initiating the contest is at advantage because he knows its coming and the surprise attack victim is at a severe disadvantage and we would try to do it at random serious times like in the middle of football games or right before the bell was about to ring and we would probably get a detention for being late to class and we all got so good at it it became kind of a thing to us of like relaxation and eye rolling so it kinda became like a calming effect like taking someone's mind off a big moment they may be stressed about and it grounded us in some big moments sometimes 😂 not to say its like some kind of life changing tool or tactic or anything but to this day I can keep a straight face through literally everything now and I even played it with some guys at basic training in the army a couple years ago and it was a nice little time wasting game... btw im currently an E-4 SPC 12B combat engineer trying to train up for sapper school sometime soon when I make SGT then possibly try my hand at SFAS one day. Keep on keeping on my military brothers ✊
