I'm 57 years old and I just started BJJ a month ago . I love it, but it's frustrating finding balance in not knowing ANYTHING and being asked to full-on "spar" by the instructor, with others who know as little or less than myself. I'm all for trying new things, but it seems at cross purposes to be asking someone with essentially NO technique to work on a form "freely". I mean, how can we be "free" when we know next to nothing of technique? Yes, we have to start somewhere, but having some solid technique BEFORE you even think about sparring seems a better, less frustrating and safer way to go. I liken it to taking a couple of boxing classes and then being told "Okay, now box", or someone handing you a violin and saying "Okay, I booked you into Carnegie Hall, now play". I mean....how the hell do you do that, when you know next to nothing?

THEN he said ANYONE with ANY bit of knowledge or curiosity it doesn’t make sense. So which is it? I served for 12 years and have plenty of combat experience and I believe this guy is a hump. Sad thing is, there’s a lot more of this type of guy(s) out there in leadership positions that do it for the glory no matter the cost.

Listen to Christian KZfaqrs, and they all have the same range of vocal infection, ways of turning a phrase, and ridiculously overdramatic way of performing "emotions." Jocko, and others of his ilk have the exact same kind of way they've developed to perform their dance of toughness, tenacity, and to enhance their tales of their own honor, bravery, self-sacrifice, and love for their fellow warriors. I have nothing to say about what they did or didn't do in the fight, my father flying a little single engine plane around Vietnam reporting back what he saw (and, interestingly, refusing to talk about it after), and a teenage visit to the PJs out at Fairchild when i thought for about 5 seconds about pointing myself in their direction, are my only real personal contact with the military. I can't speak to it. But I'll tell you, when I watch all these guys out on social media preening and performing their warrior spirit dance for the admiring masses, it looks cringe to me in such a deeply uncomfortable way. All my life, I've seen people brag on themselves, sometimes exaggerating and sometimes not, but always bragging, always performing. It's a human thing. It doesn't bother me much. But there's something extra when I see people doing that in ANY situation that involved taking and ruining the lives of others, no matter the justice or not of the cause. Maybe I'm just uncomfortable because I'm old enough to remember when braggarts were mostly found on barstools annoying their friends or in police uniforms, places like that, not making bank off it by building whole organizations and brands off their tales. Even if they're all, every one of them, as great as they want you to believe, it's still fucking gross as hell that they're getting rich and famous off of the pain, suffering, trauma, and grief of untold thousands, whether Americans or not. I have my own thoughts about why and how we in the U.S. use our military might, but that doesn't even matter. If I was as Gung ho as my father was, before he went over, I'd still be saying the same thing. It's awful, it's unethical, it's immoral, and it shouldn't be celebrated or accepted to dishonor the memory of all that suffering by turning it into just another way to turn a buck.

I wasayn Infantry team leader in Iraq 04 05 TF2/2 we were part of Operation Phantom fury (fallujah2 Nov 04) It was a war man. The seals did big time us in Kuwait when we asked for tips as leaders in combat but could just be that team. The marines shifted into our lane and lit us up. If you fought with US forces it was always a cluster fuck some times it was you sometimes it was someone else but the truth its no one who fought in these wars are clean so coming out to shame the dead or others is bullshit because a complete aar of anyones combat time no one is clean and thats the truth.
