In this video, Chelsey with Quilted From The Roots teaches her method for preparing fabric for a quilt project. She covers starching, pressing, and folding the fabric, so it is ready to go for cutting or storing.

When you ironed the first part of your fabric you ironed a bow into the cut ends instead of straight. I wonder if that happened in your salvage sides to cause the bow you talked about when folding the first piece. Thanks for this video, much appreciated even 5 years later...

Hmmm…it has been so long since I made this I would have to go back to watch and see lol! I still struggle with Kona. It’s like the selvage is so tight it really shrinks in compared to the rest of the fabric. This is a video I really want to remake because I have changed a few things on my process. When things finally slow down a bit, I will definitely add this to the video list! Keep an eye out!

I made it! I got some ironing board cover material and added a couple layers of insulbrite and added a backing and then put some binding on it. It worked really well for a while. I could roll it up out of the way, but then it started getting brittle. I made one out of plywood that I use now. There are you tube videos out there on how to make one. I need to make a bunch for our guild’s quilt show, so maybe I can record it to show you how to make one!

Do your pre wash/shrink your fabric before you starch?

It depends. Usually no, because I am too lazy! I always make sure to use color catchers when I do end up washing. If I have a lot of batiks that I am nervous about bleed, then I will, especially reds.
