I don't have lot of cricket playing experience but when I was playing as a teenager in the second or third team but still with/against fully grown adults, people over age 20. So that was already intimidating to go in there to bat. Advice like this would've helped me or any kid so much to calm my nerves. one time I was batting, second ball of the inning and my pants knot came lose. I had to take off my gloves and tie my pants. Honestly the most terrifying moment in my cricketing life ahahha. I felt like everyone was watching me tie my pants. I'd have felt less embarrassed if I just walked in there naked.

Steve is an absolute legend. He faced great bowlers like Marshall, Ambrose, Walsh, Akram, Waquar, Donald, Pollock, Gough, Streak, Murali, Saqlain at their peak. Pitches are not flat track like these days. In 90's, there were almost 5/4 Aussie batsmen in top 10 test player list. Therefore, he had to perform every time. After Allan border, he is the only one had 50+ average in test.

The iceman. Steve Waugh was a wall of a batsman that would demoralize bowling lineups. On the other hand you have Ricky Ponting, the greatest captain the games seen and probably in the top 2 greatest batsman ever. Legends of the game!

His autobiography is quite interesting. Rare to get an insight into such a self aware character who played the mental side of the game so well. He knows his ego is there, but slickly navigates it. A one of a kind character.

Iron man. Gave nothing away with a face like granite. Was as tough as he looked. People don't give him credit for being a good captain coz he had star players in his side..... but he had the ability of making players want to do well for him. A true leader.

@@JamesJones-od2ns I would credit Allan Border for really turning things around for Australia. Waugh was a product of Border's tough ruthless approach and he and Ponting continued the legacy very well. Still managing a team full of stars like that is an aspect of captaincy that has to be admired. Imagine dealing with someone like Warnie who was a quality player and a strong personality!

There are many facets to captaincy - in terms of tactics, Waugh was never the great tactician. But as a leader, a figurehead, a general in the trenches, cricket has never seen a captain like Steve Waugh.

Seen them all, from back in the early sixties. Huge admiration for all the greats. But there was always something special about Tugger, from when he assumed the Test captaincy. A grittiness that obviously rubbed off on his teammates. He IS my no.1 Test player.

Back living in the Panania and Revesby suburbs 70's and 80's what days they were as a young kid. Always outside everyday playing sport in the street and backyard, your mum always having to call you in for dinner. Panania Public School and East Hills Boys High School. Great memories of the Waugh's. Their father Roger a great tennis player, use to run and coach at the Thompson St tennis courts and later owned the Revesby North Newspaper shop.

All these Australians are the nicest possible fellas off the field, but my goodness they used to play the game hard. I didn't think that ability wise they were THAT much better than the England players of the day, but their strength of mind and sheer determination to succeed was miles ahead, and it wasn't until 2005 that England finally were able to match them in that department after years and years of failure.

One of the legend of Australian cricket....10927 test runs 32 hundreds batting at no. 5 just brilliant...magnificent...although he scored only 3 hundreds in ODI but gotta say one of that 3 hundred was one of the best hundred scored in 45 years of one day cricket...that hundred vs SA at Edgbaston in 1999 changed world cricket completely...it started invincible AUSSIES..in way world has to witness their complete dominance for 8 more years..99 - 2007..all that started with that century by Steve Waugh...

Border set the bench mark by winning the 1987 world cup and others really kept developing and made it better and better. Taylor had a chance to win the 96 world cup final but the lions roared beating India and Australia back to back.

Obviously , Since Steve Waugh debuted in Ashes 1989 till his retirement in 2004 , How many Ashes did England won ? Answer : Zero How many Ashes Series Pointing won in England - Zero Not to mention under Pointing , They even lost Ashes at Home in Australia in 2010.

Steve Waugh started as Iceman in crunch situations in 1987 World Cup , helping them win it . Since his 1989 Ashes debut till his retirement, Australia didn’t lose an Ashes Test series . After he retired Australia immediately lost the 2005 Ashes . Waugh always played best when it mattered under pressure.

Growing up I supported Australia after India clearly remember Australia had their backs against the wall in 99 world cup they had to win every game in super six to reach the semis Steve Waugh led them brilliantly to win the coveted world cup... Champion cricketer one of the Goat's
