When I bought my house, the basement was not finished. The thought of my grandmother having "boarders" during the war and depression popped into my head. So I finished the basement and I am renting it to nurses who travel from state to state. My very first one comes on Sunday with her husband and two large dogs. I am dog friendly! I disagree about the garden. Being able to go to your garden and pick fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs is in my opinion necessary especially if you have children and elderly parents. Standing in long lines for food is not easy when you’re a caregiver. Plus gardening is not only beneficial for you physically but also mentally. When under stress the garden is very therapeutic 🌱💚❤️

It's easier to grow super sized prolific gardens on land that has been fallow for many years. My best garden ever was in the city on a postage stamp back yard that was covered by cement (lime) for decades. I jackhammered it up and put in a vegetable garden. Zero fertilizer was needed. The microorganisms were pristine and the soil was amazing!

As a Venezuelan that lived most of the crisis over there I find these advices very helpful, everything important would be reduced to food and shelter, having your own place is key, just having some chicken and eggs will keep yourself in a good position to feed your family and/or for bartering. Of course cash-gold-silver would help but only for so long, should be kept for specific purposes unless you’re starving.

On the downside lots of animals get dumped, domestic violence increases as does mental health issues. My mom was born on a river bank camp and doctor was paid with a gallon of goat's milk and 2 laying hens. My dad was born while his family ran west away from the dust bowl. Doctor was paid with a roll of barbed wire and 6 fence posts. That's the way it was because all of the things you suggested to do in a depression all went any almost instantly for low income folks after Black Monday, Oct. 28, 1929. Mom was only 5 months old. I had a great great relative that ran a moving business during the depression. He hired men that were in the employment lines and bread lines. I was told he would tell them "I'll pay you for a day's work and even feed you lunch but if you steal from me" and he'd point to the 38 on his hip. Needless to say he always had workers and never had to fire a shot.

So much good advice but the one little piece that I can agree with is, "Don't lend $." I've learned the hard way. Especially to those Uncle Bob types unless you're trying to get rid of them. Because once you start asking for it back, they disappear.

As someone else mentioned extra security is a good idea. Another possible type of security is if you own a home is to make the outside look like your broke. Let the weeds grow up and put junk out in your yard so anyone that looks at your place will be scared to either come up to your house or they will say, he doesn't have anything and go down to the next house that looks like they have money. I can testify this method works as I'm broke except for social security. The Jehovah witnesses don't even come around anymore. However one lady more broke than me came by last week and wanted money so it's not foolproof.

While you're making your comparison of the great depression and today's economic situation, you may want to consider one outstanding thing......the great depression was 100 years ago (give or take a few years). People back then were much more humanitarian toward each other than they are now and, in this era, they will not be so kind to each other and the degree of overall suffering will be far worse than it was back then.

Not to mention that people had a much better connection to cold, hard reality. Many people nowadays are completely divorced from the cycles of nature and the realities of being a mammalian life form on a living Earth. Most people might as well just be algorhythms on a server, that's how much connection they have to real life.
