How To Prepare & What To Expect With BRACES

Wondering what to expect once you get braces? Let's go over all the foods you should buy and things to have on hand to make your first few days of braces a comfortable experience!
The main thing to expect with braces is that your mouth will probably be sore the first day right after your braces are put on (for a couple of days) and each time they’re “adjusted.” Since braces work by physically moving your teeth, those little ligaments around your teeth get stretched out and sore. This can make your entire mouth feel sore that first day, but the good news is that it wears off. Some people feel fine later that day, while others want to take Motrin for a couple of days.
Minor to moderate soreness is completely normal when you’re wearing braces. Every time the wire needs to be changed out or there’s an adjustment made to something (like wearing bands or a palatal expander) you’ll probably feel some mild discomfort. Do braces hurt everybody? No. But “preparing for the worst” can help you have realistic expectations

Getting mine soon + a tongue thrust appliance! Thank you for helping me marshall my courage to go in to get proper dental care! It's difficult when you feel embarrassed by your look, but I went in knowing I don't look my best and got the help I needed! I also now have a dental routine because of you :) : string floss, waterfloss (1x per day after last meal) antiseptic mouthwash, fluoride mouthwash, fluoride toothpaste (currently using Tanner's Tastypaste in chocolate flavor I found on amazon...great idea for another toothpaste tasting video!). I hate mint flavor and can't use pastes with the SLS ingredient, so my new routine tailored to my needs has been immensely helpful! Thank you for always leading with kindness and bequeathing knowledge. You are loved and appreciated ❤️ 🙌🏾🦷

Is the tongue thrust appliance going to effective? I had as a teen and sure, the gap closed, but reopened years later. The ortho told me if I wanted it to be fixed, I needed jaw surgery. I heard that speech therapy can help, but I never tried .. but I will because I want braces again

@@haroldfinch8019 great question! I had them make me a removable tongue thrust appliance to be worn at night. I've worked hard to remain cognizant during the day to not push my tongue against the back of my front top and bottom teeth. I followed some of the myofacial tongue exercises I found online such as the peanut butter roof of mouth scrape, popping the tip of my tongue to the roof of my mouth several times a day, and practicing holding a sugar free mint or plastic bead to the roof of my mouth with my tongue. It helped. I also bought a front teeth only night guard for my teeth clenching which also had a neat palate flap that prevent my tongue from pushing. I found it on Amazon for cheap. I'm hoping I'll be able to continue with the tongue thrust appliance after my braces treatment and maybe they can make it removable even without the braces...idk. Best of luck to you Harold and explore myofacial exercises and appliances before jaw surgery! We got this 💪🏾!

At my orthodontist the braces have trap door things that hold the wire so you don’t need the elastic so sadly no colours for me 😢

@@Maddie-by8il One must have is a soft toothbrush and mouth wash. Don't change your teeth brushing routine. If you brush before your first meal of the day stick to that. If after stick to it. Also don't use your tongue to remove food from between your brackets because you will make them loose (I have a loose one at the moment). Also have fun with them okay make sure you are confident💪🖒❤

True! This is my second time getting braces (once at 16 and now at 32 b/c I didnt wear my retainer and didn't prioritize self-care) what I've learned that everyone's pain tolerance is different 😊 Ex: I went through child birth with no pain medication and yet braces are super hard for me to handle 😬 but, like Whitney said, it WILL get better. Pain is much easier for me to handle when I know what to expect and if I know that it's "normal" so thank you for this video! @TeethTalk ❤ because of you, I'm determined to teach my 1 year old good teeth brushing habits! 🪥🦷 P.S. infant and toddler videos would be Amazing!

I got braces for this issue, had the canine exposed in april of 2023, it’s october now and it’s basically fully pulled down! i’d definitely recommend braces for this issue it only took like 6-7 months to fix it.

@@Maddie-by8il don’t eat a double chicken burger with fries 💀 but nah getting it on they might remove some debris from your teeth which you may find sensitive, putting the braces on might again be with force so expect some sort of pain but you can handle that shit. After braces your mouth will definitely feel tight and idk if it was cuz I ate that meal literally after braces but you won’t be able bite anything for like a day or two 😭😭 Ice cream boutta be your best friend as it’ll help relieve the pain for some time but yea after two days it’s all good! Good luck!😂

I know this is off topic, but I'm curious to hear your opinion. My back molars on the surface of the teeth are catching food, especially raspberry seeds are getting stuck in a hole on the biting surface. It can take an hour to push the seed out. When i got my teeth cleaned I asked the dentist if a sealant would help, or a filling, he said "there is nothing to fill, I could only do a crown." It's still a large tooth with no decay, how can that be? Was that an honest answer? I'm afraid my teeth are getting more concave from acid etching the surface, I notice my bottom teeth hitting the back of my front teeth as I age. If my teeth keep wearing away am I going to be pushing my teeth out? I can see how my top teeth are wearing away the surface because of my overbite, is it a bad idea never to get my bite fixed?

@@SlimeySoldier they hurt, Tuesday was probably the worst day I couldn’t sleep or eat, it was horrible, but their just really bulky rn I have to go in a month and get a spacer and then a week later get 2 teeth pulled and then another week later get my bottom braces on 😒😫

4:39 LIES!!!! it's day 6 today and it hurts like a bxtch still 😭 lol sometimes I feel it's getting better but I still can't eat anything other than yoghurt

Same here, everybody is different & everyone has a different level of pain tolerance - I've been sore for about a week or so each time I've gotten a new wire. 🍋 we just work with what we've got and enjoy the experience 😊 this is a great time to try smoothies, shakes, and tons of other blended drinks! Cheers🍦 (remember to swish & brush after)
