Video description: Cleaning and conservation of antique wood planes.
This video shows the process of cleaning and preserving antique wood planes.
The first step is to thoroughly clean the planers of dirt and dust. This is done using fine sandpaper and a sanding sponge that does not damage the wood.
The next step is the treatment of parts attacked by wood-damaging insects using microwaves or chemical preparations against wood-damaging insects. This is followed by infusing with linseed oil and coating with beeswax to protect them from further damage and deterioration.
After cleaning and conservation, the planes are ready to be displayed in a museum, where they will be open to the public and serve as a display of historic woodworking tools.
This video is a useful resource for anyone interested in antique woodworking tools and their preservation.

beautiful job restoring these wonderful old molding planes - they’re good for another hundred years now. i love that you don’t try to make things look brand new again, as many restorers do, but rather honour the history of the tools and machinery. my grandfather had a cool old molding plane with interchangeable sole plates and blades, so you could use the same body to make numerous different profiles

I have been many old buildings and lived in many old homes that have moldings made from planes like these and I never knew how they were made. I thought it was section by section. Now after clicking on your restoration vid on a box with a bunch of pieces of wood, I now know something I always wanted to know. What an incredible piece of history, beautifully restored. Thanks.

Wonderful restoration! Tools of the trade get a new life! When I see old tools like these I have to think about what all they have created , what the master wood worker felt as he made things, the hours spent, the pride that went into his work and the trust he put into his tools. I could never presume to comment on your amazing skills and patience. For cracks like in the box, I have an old automotive leaf type feeler gauge for the various thicknesses needed to get the glue in. Wipes clean.

Wow! It's amazing what treasures are still out there. Thank you for restoring this item. As I read in other comments this was special for a customer but I can't imagine how you felt to have the privilege of restoring it. It's a weighty responsibility but makes you feel so good when you've been able to accomplish it. Am I right in thinking each planer had a representation of the design it made both on the bottom and on the side? Makes me wonder what the original tools looked like.

There is a better way to clean up old moulding planes, scrubbing with a mix of boiled linseed oil and turpentine, using a medium grade wire wool. It doesn’t remove the patina or round off the profile the way sanding does. Nice to see old tools restored 👍

Não resisti, Tive que comentar. Haja madeira para tantas Plainas. Meu pai tinha uma mais moderna, a madeira era envernizada e a lâmina era maior. Algumas vezes ele desmontava para dar uma limpeza. Foi bom lembrar dele. Ele era Projetista más, trabalhou e aprendeu vários ofícios.

hace 30.. 40 años atras mi mama salvo un mueble de cocina antiguo, bañando con aguarras / kerosene .. y asi mato todo lo que tenia adentro.. luego lo dejo orear 30 dias , y luego lo pinto, nunca tuvo ningun problema de termitas. ni tenia olor, era el mueble donde guardabamos los electrodomesticos jejeje

Another museum quality restoration. I knew that there anti-helminthic compounds for human use but never saw a product for use to save antique furniture. I have seen the molding planes before but was curious about the purpose of the piece that was not a plane.
