I couldn't figure out what you would use that thing for until you told us Veronika. And this generation thinks they knòw a thing or two about recycling! Thank you for sharing, and where would we be without Radek's touch of gold embellishment. Marvellous, your house must be fill of wonderful, intesting things from days gone by.

Even the most mundane objects had elegance designed into them back in the day. My grandfather-in-law had a home-built one of these to recycle newspaper in their Wisconsin farmhouse that was heated by a wood stove in the parlor. As I recall, it was some bent rebar for the roller and handle, and piece of half-round gutter mounted on a wooden stand. We spent many a long winter's evening winter in the kitchen playing cards and "rolling paper."

As a real wood restorer and woodworker, this is really painful to watch. I'm sorry but you ruined that chest of drawers. You really need to learn what real restoration is.

The projects you use are always captivating. Watching the restoration another treat. Seeing the final product used to create paper logs and start a barbeque is icing on the cake. You never disappoint in your videos. I am looking forward to seeing what you do next!

These paper log rollers were common & cheap to buy back in the heyday of unsolicited junk mail from the 1970s through the mid 1990s. After that, the internet pretty much eliminated the junk mail industry. You could find them in cast iron, sheet metal & plastic... I knew a man who heated his entire house, all winter, with paper logs. He told all his neighbors, friends & coworkers that he would take all their junk mail off their hands & they were happy to unload the unsolicited junk mail on him. He got about 2 decades' worth of free heating by using such a gadget. Win-win for everybody!

A wonderful restoration! This brings back a memory, before my mom passed away in 2009 a neighbor brought over the "device" I had no clue what it was but my mom took one look and her eyes lit up I had thought to get rid of what looked like scrap metal but she said oh no... we are keeping this! I asked her what it was and she said..I'll show you. I was told to grab some newspapers we had and magazines ..she had me tear apart the magazines and line them up. (she was in a wheelchair at the time and a bit weak) but I gave her the stuff when I was done and she said just watch..she put the pieces together bit by bit, turning the handle and she just kept smiling till she got a pretty decent log size. She said there with a huge grin, I looked at her..a log? she laughed she said yep! She told me how when she was little her father insisted on having one, as they were quite poor she and her father would walk along the railroad tracks picking up coal and newspapers that were flung from the trains, they would stash the coal and make as many logs they could to heat the old house. It brought back memories of some happy times between her and her dad that she had missed. Oy I think I inherited her gift of gab and the love of old things. Thank you for restoring this wonderful piece of history and for the fond memory. :)

I have never seen a long roller for old newspapers before. Radek, you did an awesome job of restoring it to working order. It looks much better than before, and it works like a charm too. Excellent work I must say. Thank you, Veronica, for this history lesson about the roller.
