Did you know that algae is one of the biggest reasons hobbyists give up on their aquariums. The good news is that if you follow some basic guidelines you can have a successful planted aquarium without suffering from any algae issues.
It is always better in the long-term to prevent algae from occurring rather than having to continual treat it. Treating various types of algae is the topic of a separate video so let us know in the comments which types of algae you would like to know more about.

Remember guys the most important thing to fight algae is patience.. Do water changes, adjust the light, ferts, and the flow, also do manual remover, and add some algae eater like in this video. I always see algae as a "balancer" in my tank, if there's some imbalance in my tank, algae helps me to 're-balancing' it. That way I can tricked myself to be less worried (and sometimes mad) so I can focused on the root cause of the problem. Good luck!

I always seem to have staghorn pop up in my high energy systems, mainly on rock and wood. I'll have a heavily planted tank, do weekly 50% water changes, dose a comprehensive fertilizer daily, and keep my CO2 around 30ppm, and test for virtually 0 nitrates. Despite these ideal conditions, I still see staghorn. I mostly keep shrimp and snails so most nuisance algae never makes an appearance, but staghorn is one unwelcomed guest I always seem to run into.

Keep your aquarium simple, you can't capture the nature in a glass box, can u? Don't try that instead go for frequent holidays.. spend there not on these foolish tanks I have a 5 ft tank but it's very basic, with lot of small fishes which soothes my nerve.. and small amount of drift wood/rocks/ and plants... enjoy

@@cablenetworksystems In my experience simple tanks can get algae problems, warm weather, high stocking, window light in the Spring and Autumn (as strong sun slips in at a lower angle), high oxygenation and decaying plants starved of CO2 - been keeping fish and plants for over 50 years, seen it all. Good luck.

@@williammcdowell6257 ok I am only 50 plus.. so not so experience like you, the professionals tear up their set up in 1 or 2 year most after spending fortune( at least they promote to boost up business) I maintain a 5 ft tank with a good filter, quite a big drift wood, white sand, some plant and some Christmas and java moss, with some rare tetras and others who mix well with them, kept few crocodile fish for algae and put black sticker in 3 side except the front to minimize the light from out side... I have been doing great with minimum maintenance and kept it low tech as I don't prefer to box the nature in a glass box and then burn huge amount of electricity. I have a small solar unit which is enough to sustain my 5 ft tank and not producing or contributing much on our environment which all of have to keep in our mind. Thank you for your wise advise and hope you will be wiser... Good luck to you too

@@cablenetworksystems Yes I do understand, and am a big fan of a genuinely green approach, the closest I have achieved is to tweak the Walstad method with yeast generated CO2. High tech tanks are a bit of misnomer, and really, they rarely use much additional electricity, but of course, if stem plants are grown there is a lot of trimming etc., for myself I choose to grow a range of plants but I definitely, like you, do feel that some aqua-scapers lose sight of something in the hobby, but I stick to my simple point, algae like sin, is no man's prerogative. Do continue to enjoy the hobby.

A very timely video! 🦠 Zero algae for the first 160 days or so of my scape, then it seems as the days got longer and lighter and I changed up my plant feeding routine, some hair algae and some green spot algae has appeared. I’ve just removed a whole clump of moss (which was growing well but I couldn’t get the strands of algae out) and two java ferns which have been struggling since I put them in and never recovered. Also I cut off the worse-affected anubius leaves. Also continuing with usual weekly maintenance with a 50% water change. Hoping this will prevent too much algae growth. My next step is to fill in the gaps with a couple more new healthy javas, a nice big buce, and perhaps another anubius or something, and also reduce the photoperiod. Fingers crossed!

Not sure if you’re still dealing with green spot algae but if you test your phosphate levels it’ll show that it’s either too high or too low. Oround 1ppm phosphate is where you want to be. I have to supplement phosphate using Seachem Phosphorus every other day and this stopped the green spot algae. Hope this helps.

@@edward7945 I beat staghorn by dialing in my co2 , adding a Siamese algae eater and not over trimming my plants , If you really knock back your plants all at once it can throw things out of balance. Instead it's best to trim small amounts more frequently and separately , like stems one week, carpet another week. etc.

Test for high levels of Nitrate & Phosphate - you may need to reduce light duration for a time and simultaneously change a lot of water (assuming your tap water is low in Nitrate and Phosphate). Long term fix you may need a better/larger filter and reduce stocking levels. Blue Green is primarily caused by pollution, light and temperature. Good news is that it is the easiest to fix.
