Love anubias. I have the same plant since 1998. It has grown amazingly since that time... All my tanks have anubias from that small little one I purchased more than 20 years ago. Such a great plant, such a resilient plant.

@@TropicaAquariumPlants I guess it is a nana cause leave are about 3-4cm long on average. I have video of them, you can see them easily as my main tank looks just like a giant anubias, Maybe you could tell me if I am right thinking it is nana. My page profile picture is leaves of that anubias with a young adult cherry shrimp on it (as a scale). It was such a long time ago ... and I have not bought any anubias since so I cannot be sure about the variety (obvioulsy the packaging box has been thrown away a very very very long time ago so cannot have a look at it 😂😂)

I now have Anubias petite and Bucephalandra Kedegang in my tank following your previous recommendations and am loving them. I have had the Anubias for more than a month and the Buce came this week and I'm looking forward to seeing it grow. So those two are my current favourites. Thanks for the advice. I am looking forward to getting your book for Christmas.

Great video with useful advice. Just a question. How long does Tropica plant substrate last, before I need to add root tabs again? Thanks
@TropicaAquariumPlants
@TropicaAquariumPlants 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dominic. The substrate itself outlasts us as a specie, you can add root tabs whenever you feel like the plants aren't getting enough nutrition; it is more of a personal choice and plant based decision rather than a substrate driven one.

I'm setting up a new aquarium soon, I plan to use monte carlo as an epiphyte on a bonsai tree, is there any benefit to using soil or would I just need to use liquid fertiliser?
@TropicaAquariumPlants
@TropicaAquariumPlants 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kelvin. Could you be more specific? soil and liquid fertilizers tend to be 2 different things; you should use fertilizer regardless of whether you have soil or not and for an epiphyte you don't need soil at all, just attach it on the wood directly and let it "do its thing". You can read more about it here: tropica.com/en/plant-care/

@@TropicaAquariumPlants I'm still unsure if I'm going to plant in the substrate in which case I would use both. Or if I just have epiphytes would soil be required. Thanks for the reply, thats cleared it up for me

With slow growing plants like anubias and buce in a low energy nano, how would you prevent algae? Add floating and stem plants? Many thanks
@TropicaAquariumPlants
@TropicaAquariumPlants Жыл бұрын
Adding fast growing plants can definitely help. Try ensuring adequate lighting: Low energy nano tanks require low to moderate lighting. It's important to use the correct spectrum and intensity for the plants, Anubias and Buce are low-light plants, and they can thrive under low light conditions. If the lighting is too strong it can promote algae growth. Use a timer: It's important to limit the duration of lighting to around 6-8 hours per day. A timer can help regulate the lighting schedule and prevent the plants from being exposed to too much light. Add floating plants which can help to absorb excess nutrients from the water column and reduce algae growth. These plants can also provide shade to the lower parts of the tank, reducing the amount of light that reaches the bottom and promoting healthy growth of low-light plants like Anubias and Buce. Increase water movement by adding a gentle flow or surface agitation to help distribute nutrients evenly throughout the tank and prevent dead spots where algae can grow. And finally, the most important is still regular water changes: Regular water changes can help to remove excess nutrients and organic matter from the tank. This can prevent algae growth and keep the tank clean and healthy.

Can pogostemon helferi and staurogyne repens be attached to rock or wood ?
@TropicaAquariumPlants
@TropicaAquariumPlants Жыл бұрын
Yes, both Pogostemon helferi and Staurogyne repens can be attached to rock or wood in an aquarium. These plants are often used in aquascaping layouts where they are attached to hardscape elements like rocks or driftwood. When attaching these plants to hardscape, it's important to tie them securely to the surface to prevent them from becoming loose and floating away. You can use a fishing line or thread to tie the plants onto the hardscape until they attach and start growing roots on their own. It's also important to note that when these plants are attached to hardscape, their growth pattern may differ from when they are planted in substrate.

There is I am afraid no such thing as liquid CO2 (unless under intense pressure) it is glutaraldehyde, a disinfectant which is of course toxic, very hard to use safely in shrimp/fish stocked tan. I would not touch the stuff - literally! Blue Green algae suggests pollution - normally high phosphates. Really not a good indication of the health of an aquarium, the worst of all 'algae' problems. Blackout will work - short term - but do add aeration during blackout or fish will die. My advice: remove by syphon all algae, repeated water changes of 25% daily for a fortnight, add a yeast or pressurised CO2 system and add a phosphate absorption resin, ROWA is excellent. Light coloured substrate and long-photoperiods and high temperatures also don't help. Good luck.
