In this video, I go over how to prevent sublimation ghosting on fabric. This is a great sublimation tip for beginners and experienced crafters and business owners in the sublimation field!
I use this technique when I’m printing my light fabrics for my scrunchies, scrunchie wrist totes, my scrunchie key chains, as well as a bunch of other products that I make with my satin fabric.
I hope this sublimation tip helps you to get that perfect pressed image every time!

You saved my sanity! I've gone through almost a dozen tote bags using spray adhesive and heat tape, and every single one had ghosting! Your method is SO simple, and uses so much less tape and adhesive. Thank you so much!!!

I know right? The only thing I make sure of when doing a mug is to just make sure I tape it it well. I used to do full wrap mugs using an oven and heat resistant shrink wrap. Despite my best efforts, I would on occasion get white ghosting (hazy faint cloud), and text ghosting.

@@SewandPrintwithJulia it sort of did.... it's definitely better! I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I sublimate a lot, but this is the first time I'm doing drawstring bags, and turns out, they are a nightmare! @@SewandPrintwithJulia I'm doing the regular 100% drawstring gym bags. I do have the straps and corners off the platen. I've tried with and without a pillow inside, and still I get uneven transferring. Maybe I need a new pillow, and also not press so heavy so when the press pulls the paper it doesn't drag it. I think that's why I'm still getting a little ghosting. Hopefully a new pillow will fix the unevenness. Unless you have a better idea, I'm all ears! :) Danielle

What about with stretch knit fabrics? I have to put the tape on the fabric or it won't stay. I will say that I had better results putting the heat tape on the fabric perpendicular to the edges vs parallel to the edges.
@SewandPrintwithJulia
@SewandPrintwithJulia 22 күн бұрын
Hi @aw3271! I've done this with stretch fabrics. Does the fabric curl on the sides before pressing? I've taped the fabric to the bottom paper to keep the edges from curling. Then did the method in the video. Hope this helps!

everywhere else says to tape sublimation paper to the substrate...so you are having the heat press take the sublimation sheet off right away, hmmm
@SewandPrintwithJulia
@SewandPrintwithJulia Ай бұрын
Hi @IUpaulshircliff! Yes. Ghosting happens when the transfer sheet shifts on the substrate when opening the heat press. This may not happen with all substrates but I find this tip works for most all substrates where pro-spray or tacking down with heat tape doesn't do the trick. Or if pro-spray is not recommended due to the residue that can be left behind and mess up deign, colors, or fabric especially on light weight fabrics like the satin I use in my videos. This tip prevents that.

Does the tape damage the heat press top in any way?. I did my first sublimation on satin n it ghost, 👻 👻 so now going to try this.
@SewandPrintwithJulia
@SewandPrintwithJulia Жыл бұрын
Hi Denise! No, the heat tape doesn't "melt" like normal scotch tape would or anything else that may not be heat resistent. I just don't like to keep anything sticking to the heat platen for long.
@SewandPrintwithJulia
@SewandPrintwithJulia Жыл бұрын
If for some reason you do get a little stickiness or glue goo from the tape, just turn off your heat press and when it is cool, clean the heat platen with a microfiber towel but the premium heat tape shouldn't be leaving any mark on the heat press platen,

I tried your trick and it didn’t work for me 😢I’ve ruined so many towels! I don’t know what else to do.
@SewandPrintwithJulia
@SewandPrintwithJulia 5 ай бұрын
Hi! Can you explain what is happening on your towels? Are you getting ghost images on your design? Or are you perhaps getting faded colors? (Which would be another issue.) The towel should stay on the heat press while the transfer should be sticking to the top platen not touching the towels when opening.
@dyte9180
@dyte9180 5 ай бұрын
@@SewandPrintwithJulia ghosting is on the towel and there’s some fading. The towel is staying the heat pad and the print is on the heat plate. I taped the towel down on the heat pad and that stopped the ghosting but there’s still fading, Temp is 370 and pressed for 100 seconds. I’ve tried lower temp and less time, which doesn’t help, the print is faded if I do lower heat and less time.
@SewandPrintwithJulia
@SewandPrintwithJulia 5 ай бұрын
Are these polyester waffle towels? Polyester terry cloth towels? I could suggest a time and temp but each has different temps and pressing times. If the whole towel seems faded, then that's a pressure or time issue not so much a temp issue. If the fading is spotty like it only appears in some spots on the towel, that would suggest a heat press issue where you have cold spots on your heat platen where the coils are starting to burn out.
@dyte9180
@dyte9180 5 ай бұрын
@@SewandPrintwithJulia I tried a different polyester fabric and no ghosting. I’m thinking it’s the towel itself. The towel is polyester.

Does the heat tape come off the edge of your transfer, or is it totally on the back of your transfer? Hard to tell in the video. Can you apply this technique to hardboard coasters? Thanks for this. I can't wait to try it!
@SewandPrintwithJulia
@SewandPrintwithJulia Жыл бұрын
Hi! The heat tape stays on the back of the transfer. You can do the same technique with coasters. Just make sure your design has a bleed that is slightly bigger than the coaster and I usually have to make sure the transfer is lined up on the coaster(s) just before I close the heat press.
@fayeyentz7975
@fayeyentz7975 Жыл бұрын

@@fayeyentz7975 Sure! I could do a future video on this. It is using the same technique as sublimating the fabric. Have you been getting ghosting on your coasters? And what type of coasters are you sublimating on? I can do a video on the ones you're most interested in doing. I have several different varieties from the car coasters to the regular cork back square ones to the neoprene ones. Got them all! LOL
@SewandPrintwithJulia

@@fayeyentz7975 Also your top cover sheet (the one that goes over the transfer) is already attached to your transfer so it shouldn't be moving. Thanks Alex for your comment but I print my fabric in bulk using this method. I set up my orders and inventory in an hour or so in the morning which involves just printing and while the designs are printing, that’s when I set up my fabric printing pieces like you see in the video before I start pressing for the day usually around 50 to 60 pieces of fabric (sometimes more especially during fourth quarter when I’m printing my Christmas stocking fabric and sometimes less during slow times) along with my orders that are print on demand for the day then I hit the press and press all my fabric at once and any orders. What takes the longest is waiting for the sublimation printer in the morning to print each design. Lol
