This makes me so excited, I got my first client but my price is so low its ridiculous, I charge $5 for a full comic page and it takes alot of work to get it done But seeing that you can charge 60 dollars+ on 1 commission is absolutely amazing, you gave me a truck load of hope, can't wait to reach that point myself.

A solid video this one. My favorite advice from has to be the parts about good communication, how to properly handle a half-pay situation and the quick mention of the repercussions of ghosting because I believe they all play into a serious thing called "trust" which can make or break your reputation whether you are an artist or a commissioner.

I've never done commisons before and I'm very inconsistent with my artstyle, should I factor that into my pricing?

I can be pretty inconsistent too. I wouldnt worry about that as much. If you have some good solid examples of your work I think that's all you need.

8:45 That's why I charge 1 invoice of half and half with a deadline of 2 weeks to a month. They pay half before I begin, provide the sketch and all, end the drawing and then they are required to pay the other half of the invoice, otherwise I have ever legal right to take back my work or even sue them for attempting to scam.

thank you for this video! quick question, after the customer, pays for the final piece and you give them the drawing, should you still include a small watermark that isn't intrusive to the piece? just in case they decide to repost or even try to sell your art afterward?

That's a great question! Unfortunately it's the internet and you cant stop someone from being a bad boy lol. Lots of artists will ass signatures to their work or find clever ways to incorporate their signatures to their art which I think is totally fine. But I dont think there should be any watermarks that obscure the art itself since they payed for it. The best thing to do is just be clear in your terms about reposting art. I allow it to be posted online as long as they @ me or tag me in it. If they dont you can send them a message about it but after that I dont think there is much that can be done.

You could use giftcards, or memberships ( like for example, discord nitro), as payment

I have a question: If somebody wants you to draw them their character or oc do I have them send a ref sheet, or do they describe their character to me?

I ALWAYS ask for reference. Not everyone has full reference sheets but I prefer to use reference. What I would recommend if someone doesn't have reference is, have that person find images of people with similar hair cuts, or outfits to what they are looking for. It will make your job so much easier!

It's alright. When you make an account it walks you through everything you need. Typically you hook it up to a bank account so you can transfer the funds you made later on but I know lots of artists that just get a card through paypal and use the funds they made from there directly

That's totally understandable! Everyone could be able to determine where their own strengths are. But if you are unsure then maybe show some friends or fellow artists your work and ask them how much they would pay? I would hate your you to under sell yourself but if you want to charge a little less as you're learning that's totally okay too!

Do you know how I could do an online-only commission page when I'm Traditional? I want to see if I could ask for an address but I don't want to sound creepy, ya know? But if I do use mail, should I then also add more to the price cause of costs for me to ship it? Sorry if rude I just need some help abt. this

No problem! Typically for traditional pieces a lot of artists work online for that nowadays. If they commission you knowing you're a traditional artist then they should understand that they need to share their address with you in order for you to ship it so there should be no issue there. Just make sure that you put all of that information in your terms and conditions. As far as charging for shipping they should absolutely be paying for that. It shouldnt come out of the cost of the commission since it's the post office that is charging the delivery fee. What some people do is have a flat rate charge for shipping that would cover the price depending on where it is going or you can tell them the price of what the shipping cost after you've sent it and found out how much it is. That's totally up to you and how comfortable you are with it. Hope that helps!

I’m starting to make commissions and here is a tip: make prices cheap so you get more people at least, if someone does not want to waste like 200$ on art!

Starting off cheaper is totally fine! Especially if you're still learning! But never charge so cheap that it isn't worth your time!
