Hey guys, I'm using the GetGood Drums Periphery 4 Matt Halpern Drum Library to show you guys how I go about programming drums. I go through everything from drum velocities to actual patterns and how I go about implementing them into my riffs.

Hey@@KeyanHoushmandLive, would be great if you would record a complete mixing session. I know that GGD go into this in their master classes, but it always seems to me that the tutorials are for advanced users. I would be especially interested in your instruments-master bus and the routing. Keep it up, you're doing great.

Well, as it seems to be, they have good ears by metal standards. Their tone is pretty balanced, but it's very full, clear, and easy to use in a mix, but also not the easiest tone to achieve. Their gear is just the easiest way to achieve their tone, which I believe is a good enough general tone that it'll easily become generic (because of the number of people and bands using similar tones) in the next few years especially with all these new plugins and whatnot making that style of tone easier to get. Now, would I use someone else's signature guitar in a band setting? Not really, nor would I spend any more than production guitar cost on one. That's a damn good idea for a drinking game though lmao.

@@thedudeofficial69 that’s an interesting way of looking at things. Personally…. I don’t see an issue with signature gear. It’s just gear. Everyone is using something that their heroes are using. The les Paul is one of the mainstay guitars of all time and it’s just a sig. There’s no rules to this game. I say if a piece of gear sounds good to you and I sprites you to keep playing… then bang on that thing till it falls to pieces. At the end of the day we are all just trying to write and make music and be happy. Whatever helps one to do that is fair game to me.

drummer here. can confirm. it's what you put around the riff that makes it interesting. i like to add a "what the fuck" fill in the middle of a verse when it repeats at a later part of the song just to introduce a little bit of variation. also, switching between cymbals for certain parts for a different feel (if the riff is the same).

Awesome content, yet again! +1 for the mixing tutorial or a video about how you go about getting so much definition with those massive chords. It's too easy to wash them out with distortion but you make them so audible and musical. It'd be cool to see how you double track and edit takes etc. Keep up the good work.

This is well done... you approach drum programming quite similar to me. I'm not a "drummer" primarily, but used to have my own set that had to sell when I was living in an apartment.. this stuff seems so obvious and kind of self explanatory to me, as I really just program exactly how I would play it but I so often forget that this isn't a necessarily a natural thing everyone can do. My biggest general tips when programming, a pretty dramatic difference in velocities on the cymbals in alternating fashion. So like 120, (40), 120, (40), where you really only "hear" the 1 and 3 but it gets filled out with the 2 and 4. Also as you cover, always adjust velocities so things aren't flat. Figure out what notes are meant to be emphasized and I suggest programming them first at your highest velocity, then never allow anything else to reach that velocity. Lastly, unlike others, I believe copying and pasting is totally okay, but after you do, I would add subtle changes in each phrasing or couple bars or whatever. (An extra bass drum hit in one, a longer fill in another, etc).

I'm the 420th person to like this video (bong rip). Anyway, I've been building my DAW with plugins (amp sims, IR's, drum plugins etc...); and I've noticed that if you aren't careful, you will lose track on where you store these files. Do you have any recommendations on how to organize your third-party softwares for your DAW? I think that would be a good little video for people whom are starting off for self-producing artists such as myself. We really are going in blind with all of this, and though it gets simpler after spending many hours of trial and errors, it's intimidating at the same time when we watch the more experienced people on KZfaq. I always ask myself, "How tf did get to that step? Is there a tutorial on the setup?"...questions like that. Great recommendation btw on NaLex Ninja. After dabbling for a while with it, I ended up using Ignite Emissary as my go to. Keep up the great work man.
