How to program / setup a new BMW E46 key fob 330 325

A brief how to on setting up a new BMW key. This was done on a 2001 E46 coupe 330ci.
Steps:
1) Insert new key.
2) Turn to the #1 position and back five times.
3) Remove key
4) Press and hold the unlock button on the key
5) While holding the unlock button, press the lock button three times.
Once these steps are done, the car should lock and unlock the doors a few times to let you know you were successful.
Once this is done, you can start the car and use the key as usual.

After 9 years, this is still useful. Thank you! It fixed my issue (2004 330i 4 door) after 5 years of no longer having a remote spare key that opened the doors. (Hint, Use the spare key for a week every few months to drive the car to keep the key charged.)

THANK YOU!! After a weekend of having to get "a professional" erm car locksmith (dont ask) to get into my door (as it came with no key to manually unlock) and some new key fob batteries IT BLOODY WORKS! New barrel and key ordered so i can get in it next time it happens. THANKS SO MUCH.

👏🏾👏🏾🙏🏿 I had bought a club hoping that I wouldn’t t have to use it. But I have been leaving my doors unlocked. I also had to change the hazard/door lock button. A couple a weeks ago my hazards or door button switch it didn’t work. So I could only unlock and lock from the inside. I had to replay this method a couple of times and open and close all doors and unlocked all doors. It finally worked. Now I can safely lock/ unlock all my doors. Now I can upgrade radio without anyone having easy access or thinking it would get stolen. Thanks a lot!!!

Hi everyone just to say.. you can buy the cheap ones on eBay. I did that I just got it today and this method works. (2001 bmw 318i e46) I’m 18 and I got this car cheap because the master key was broken.. I only had 1 key which had no lock and unlock buttons. Now I can finally lock and unlock it now 😃

This works! my car came with the original key with a dead battery, and a new key which was already cut but not programmed. this method works for the locking system of the car, but doesnt include programming the anti theft part of the key. What i did to program the new key to start the car was start the car with original key (new key inside car), then take out original and start with new key, the car should start. I let mine run for a few minutes to ensure the key had enough battery to not lock me out and so its fully programmed. Side note, my doors were all unlocked and closed when i did this, not sure if it affects anything.

Dealership said it was 230 to replace my key and program it luckily I watched this I just brought a e90 key fob for 20 getting it cut matched for $5 and programming it myself

I have a 2002 325i and the second key was never used. I drove around with it for a few days to charge the battery and tried this and this method worked for me the very first time. I dont understand why all the dislikes. Thanks for the video!

Robin Sandhu brother is your first key working well ... I have the same car but I have never used my second key I thought it's dead if we try with the second key will the first key still be working?

saiteja potluri the first key will stop working as soon as you program the second key. you can still use your first key to manually unlock/lock the car or even drive it. when you reactivate your first key, the second key will stop working. its because the on board computer system changes the code everytime the car is driven. so the next time you try to unlock the car, it can only be done with the key that was used the last time

YOU ARE THE FUCKING MAN....people almost had me dismantle my key, my sweet beautiful precious key. as i write this it is 1:15am and freezing outside but once i stumbled on to this i went outside in slippers and a light jacket and voila the door locks answered. i cant thank you enough and people please follow his directions exactly. you now have a new subscriber.

Oh crap, I think it works. I had a original key the worked sometimes and then it wouldn't. I put the non working key in the ignition and did what the video said and the car started right up...for now. I will test it out during the day

if u have 2 keys u need to programing them same time mean u make the 1st and in same time do 2nd one without open swich 5 times for 2nd key

of course it is still over priced but this is only to get the FOB to work the key will still not start the car you need a programmer for that, and you need to take out he EWS module and read the IC chip on that with a reader/programmer the write it to the little RFID chip in the key , this is only for the remote buttons on the FOB key head it is not to program the key to be coded to the EWS module to start the car

Hope you get this tech Ace. Do you need the previous key to do this, There was attempted break-in and theft of my e46 and i have to replace the entire steering columm. I assume this is what they would chg you do do at bmw anyway. GM transponder keys have a similar sequence.

Where did you take step 2 from? In my 2001 E46 320d Sedan turning key to position #1 for 3 seconds is enough, so I wonder if it's actually important to do it 5 times or a bit silly and outcome would be the same...

it's not working with some models. Different combination is: Position one, press and hold upper key button, and 3 times press center button, then release both. Done!

You actually only have to turn the key ON and OFF ......ONCE before press/holding the UNLOCK button and pressing the LOCK button three times.

Yeah everywhere I've read said once, but I'm all out of ideas, so gonna try the 5. Failing that, could be GM3 module gone bad. 2001 E39.

Programming Additional BMW Key Fobs If you have a working key fob, but wish to program additional keys, follow these steps: Take the working key fob along with the ones you want to program inside the car with all doors and windows closed. Put the working key into the ignition and turn to position 1. At this point, the dash lights and accessories should turn on. Turn the key back and remove. On the working key, hold down the unlock button and press the lock button (the BMW logo) 3 times, then release the unlock button. The doors will then automatically lock and unlock. Take the new key and hold down the unlock button while pressing the BMW logo 3 times, then release the unlock button. Again the doors should lock and unlock, and you’re done. Programming a New Key from Scratch These instructions are for programming a new key when you do not have a working key fob. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to position 1 and back rapidly 5 times. Remove the key Hold the unlock button and press the BMW logo 3 times, then release the unlock button. If you have additional keys you’d like to program at this time, repeat step 3 within 30 seconds from the original key programming. Turn on the ignition to complete the process.

Dude you still here? I'm a little desperate here, I've screwed up my keys trying to replace what I thought was a dead battery. I did the sync procedure, but you are the only guy to say turn the ignition 5 times. Is that an E46 thing, or applies to e39 too? Gonna try it now. Lets see..
