I like to pronounce things as close to the "original" as I can (I'm far from perfect!) because it seems more respectful, but some people get funny about it.

I concur, but I can’t stand it when people demand things be pronounced perfectly. I’m from Missouri, but a lot of people pronounce it “misery”, and that’s ok

I've only ever heard it pronounced as you pronounce it (albeit with less of a German accent). Never occurred to me it could be anything else other than AL-DI (not 'all-di').

Hello, Jen. Here in New Jersey, we have Aldi stores, said as " Al - di " and Trader Joe's, which are usually thought of as much higher priced. Thanx.

Weird, I've never heard anyone say ''all-dee'' Sometimes though, it's ''ow-dee'' (rhymes with Saudi) because English ppl, especially cockney accents tend to "swallow" their dark L sounds.

Ich habe gehört, dass ALDI (Nord) und ALDI Süd inzwischen Stück für Stück ihre Produkte angleichen. Es gibt also gar nicht mehr so große Unterschiede. I've heard that both ALDI North and ALDI South are going to have the same products. So there will be no big difference anymore.

So... if you wanna say it really correctly (ie: as German) is almost ends up sounding like "ID" or"Eidee"? When I listen to you say it, the "L" sound is there, but it gets kinda blended, so it's very soft. Myself and most people I know say "Al-dee" as in "Al" short for Alex, not "All" as in everything.
@JenDre
@JenDre 4 жыл бұрын
I feel it's because in English the L sits quite far in the back, whereas when I say it in German it feels more forward & the tongue shape is very different.
@brucekennedy5274

@@JenDre Ah yes, briefly watching back, I can hear the L clearly. I think us Brits tend to hit the L harder. I think it sounds a lot nicer when you say it :)

Thank you for this. I have tried to get the staff at my local ALDI (süd) here in Australia to let me know how the exact pronunciation but they all say it differently and I'm from New Zealand so pronouncing everything as close to is original form is part of my culture. We see it as lazy to not try to learn. We have many indigenous words that make people look sideways so I can relate. So phonetically it is "aisle-dee"?

It sounds like you're missing the L a bit in your pronunciation of Aldi,.... i'm Dutch and I think we pronounce Aldi (and Lidl) more or less the same as Germans would,.. As far as I know German is generally thought of as a bit harsher than Dutch (please correct me if i'm wrong), so if we pronounce the L, shouldn't the Germans do the same? Just wondering if your English is getting mixed in,.... I remember from when I lived in Australia for a few months my Dutch sounded a bit twisted if you get what I mean, and you've been living in England for a lot longer.

Glad to see you back!!!! Only polite to use the mother tongue. Trouble is most English people cant pronounce UK place names especially if they are Welsh or Scots. Ever noticed how southerners pronounce Bath with a 'r' in it. Same with 'Castle', most residents of Newcastle or Barnard Castle do not know why people do not use the correct names for the places.
