Hi Jen. That was very interesting, I wish you would do more of these videos. We haven't heard much about life in your 'new' house. As regards the quiet hour, Brits are not very happy with being regulated, although no doubt we could adapt to it. The opening of the windows, I think many would see it as letting a lot of cold air in, and warm air out, which adds to the heating bills. I think it's more customary to open just the bedroom window in the morning. Fizzy water is just carbonated water, are you not just filling yourself up with gas!!

My brother used to live in Weil-am-Rhein and his neighbourhood was very strict about keeping quiet on Sundays. Quite surprising for a Brit as we are so used to doing gardening on Sundays. And thanks for explaining "auf kipp"!

I'm Brazilian and apart from the sparkling water I have all of these habits! They're no common here and everybody tells me to stop being so fussy, especially about the clothes and shoes. My great grandparents were from Germany, I guess the habits were in my blood. ^^ haha

In the US many people take their shoes off when they enter their houses, this is particularly common in colder states, where Winter lasts 5 months and people wear snow boots for a few months.

When I was young 1950s and early 60s opening your windows in London let in the smog. You did not take your shoes off unless it was your home and you had slippers as only one room the living room had heating most of the rest of the house for most of the year was cold and damp.

Remember it well - one warm room and every other room freezing in winter. Ice on the inside of the windows, hot-water bottles at night. No way anyone wanted to open any windows!

Victorian houses were designed to let air flow through the house as they thought that was healthy. It's terrible for insulation! Modern windows have the tilt and hinge arrangement. The 50s semi of my 70s and 80s childhood had side and top opening windows.

Airing the house was pretty common when I was a child in NW England some 50 years ago. I think it has become less common post central heating. I agree though certainly not every window every morning.

Glad to know that Germans would remove shoes before entering one's house. Indians are like that as well. As an Indian in the US it drives me nuts how Americans just walk into a house with their outside shoes on!

I lived in Japan and the rule was “outside shoes stay outside”. The houses have a small area just inside the front door where you change your shoes and they usually have polished wooden floors inside. You never wear shoes or slippers on tatami mats though, so make sure you have a good pair of socks to wear.

Switching people to sparkling water is the devils work! The only water I want is straight from the tap. I think my mum airs out every so often, I've literally never even thought of doing that though. I always take my shoes off and wear slippers, but then I can't ever remember going to a house party and being asked to take my shoes off.

I never wear my outdoor shoes inside. I have one particular friend who,when I visit,I always take my shoes off to protect her carpet which as she told me cost several hundred pounds so she wants it to stay nice as long as possible. Shes not house-proud or anything,in fact she's a keen gardener and is outside as much as possible. I've got windows like your illustration of German windows and so I can have them wide open in the nice weather,and I do. In fact as I live on the 10th floor,in a heatwave I can have them open all day and night which is wonderful.

I always take my shoes off when I come in, unless I’m just popping in for a moment then going straight back out or going straight through (e.g. going to the back garden). When I lived in a house, not the ground floor flat I’m in now, I would generally open a couple of windows to let air through when I got up and took my shower. The main exceptions were weather based. In the flat I tried it but one of my neighbours came in through the open windows and stole a laptop, now I avoid opening any window that will open more than a few centimetres. One thing I’ve been told about Germany, and maybe you’ll cover this (or confirm it’s not true)in your kitchen video, is that when you rent an apartment there often won’t be a kitchen. The. Room will be there but there’ll be no sink, work surfaces or cupboards. You’re expected to bring your own and take them with you when you leave. That seems really odd to me, if true. What do you do if the kitchen in your old apartment and new are different sizes and shapes?
@freespirit6209
@freespirit6209 3 жыл бұрын
Havving rented several places in Gemany and bought houses too, I can tell you that it's quite normal to find that those leaving will take their kitchen set-up with them and you'll arrive to bare walls with pipes and wires on show. Alternative scenario: they installed or paid for the kitchen and you will have to pay them to "take it over". They will also take the light fittings (not just the bulbs) and you'll be in the dark!

'WHITE CLAW" seems to be the current trendiest flavored "sparkling water" in the USA . Its billed as a "Hard Seltzer", since it contains alcohol. Have you seen it at your local supermarket/grocery store? While in Spain, when I asked for "sparkling water" in a restaurant the reply from the server was invariably "con gas o sin gas"?

I have worked in Germany a number of times and am very familiar with the preference for Sparkling Water - but is this in all situations? E.g If you go to a Gym in Germany and you are exercising hard - do you still drink sparking water to help quench your thirst after intense exercise - would you drink sparking water while out running long distance etc? I imagine it wouldn’t be as effective at helping recover from a real thirst - can someone comment?

Are all of the German sparkling waters in disposable containers? Or are they recycled? Is German tap water safe to drink?
@JenDre
@JenDre 4 жыл бұрын
depends, a lot of them come in glass bottles that you return to the shop, other are in plastic bottles that are re-used or recycled, and you pay a deposit fee so that you also return them to the shop. and yes German tap water is safe to drink, but just like in the uk in some areas it tastes better than in others. German tap water tends to be softer than any UK water I have seen from the tap (you notice it most on you hair and skin after a shower).

Read on another site an american who was living in Germany ranting about the police coming round on a Sunday and taking away his mower, and how he could not wait to get back to the land of the free! Not mentioned here but his rant about Germany toilets, just went on and on, he shipped a ‘proper toilet’ across from America. Opening windows, yes, shoes off indoors, yes, sparkling water, yes, working for a German company for 20 years must have rubbed off, but drinking beer at 0600h in the morning, no way, it was a Bavarian company, there were beer vending machines in the factory, quiet time , not really, have too many animals.

@@JenDre Well, what is it then? The point is that it is not natural fresh water, which humans (along with other animals on the planet) have been drinking ever since their evolution, until the ubermensch Germans arrived on the scene with their 'superior' water to distinguish themselves from other more primitive humans on the planet.
@JenDre
@JenDre 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure Germans invented sparkling water and even if they did - never said it's superior, just that I prefer it and I feel like a lot of Germans do, as it's more standard over there. No need to get out the Nazi-Keule over some fizzy water.
