How to pronounce hiragana, ひらがな, aiueo, あいうえお〜わをん

Hi!
Here are the tips to pronounce Japanese hiragana, ひらがな.
I suggest you read hiragana chart, or aiueo chart, horizontaliy, which makes you realize that when you pronounce Japanese, your consonant is influenced by the following vowel.
I'll explain how to pronounce あいうえお、かきくけこ to　わをん, dealing especially with し、ち、つ、ひ、ふ、らりるれろ、を and ん.
If you don't need any explanation, please start from 10:53.
You can hear me reading あいうえお chart vertically, then horizontally.

By the way, Japanese is a pitch accent language and even あいうえお has pitch.

It’s not difficult for french 🤗 It sounds very similar when we "roll the r’s" over a french text (as opera singers or as artists would sing until the mid XXth century). It’s exactly something between L and R

My native language is English. I've always had trouble rolling my Rs for Spanish until I started trying to pronounce the R row in Hirigana. Now it's hard NOT to roll my Rs 😂 Makes sense right?

We use these so much in portuguese that I thought it was strange that people couldn't quite pronouce it. I have dificulties with this closed "u" sound. It's so similar to what I speak everyday that's it's hard not to say it my way

I never thought to read them on the horizontal so all the sounds are the same. Really helps me out. Thank you. I literally practice my vowel sounds in front of the mirror, and now that I know my lips don’t have to move much when putting consonance with the vowels, I think I can pronounce things easier. I will keep practicing.

Thank you so much. I was using a guide from a website called tofugu. I finished the reading hiragana section. I moved on to the pronunciation of hiragana and found their guide on that somewhat hard to follow. I'll use this for now. It's good practice saying the different kana vertically and horizontally and the fact you pronounce them as well helps so much. Life saver :)

Same here. I was using the Tofugu guide as well and I did well with the vowels but once I tried to take the test, I kept getting stumped becuase it focuses so much on the Romanji letters vs the characters. This is sooooo much more helpful.

I’m a native Spanish speaker. It seems like Japanese pronounces R the same way as in Spanish so i had no trouble saying らりるれろ. Very cool lesson!

らりるれろ used to get me. I only realized a little while ago, that it does sound like a click of the tongue, but I never knew how much flick to add( like you mentioned, little flick). Now I find it easier flick it faster. I appreciate you.😊

And for learning this language you need spend about 3-4 year!!! 🤯 even though you cannot fully understand Uzbek because in every region of Uzbekistan they have own pronunciation of language!!😅

Hi, Leo-san, good point! I've never given a thought to that, but actually, it makes sense. は、へ、ほ 's sounds are made at the glottis, and ひ's sound is made at the soft palate, but ふ's sound is made by the lips. F sound is made by the lip and the teeth, so the place is almost the same. Maybe your theory is correct ...

Hi, thank you for the questions! 1) Blowing a candle is about aspiration and the shape of you mouth. So even if you say ふ loud, the vowel う is said loud. I hope this explanation makes sense. 2) I'll make a short about those. So could you wait a little more?

so grateful for this, thank you! My 4 and a half year old was so curious because she loves Studio Ghibli and asked about the writing. I found this after she also asked about the menu writing at a Japanese ramen and sushi shop we ate at! If you do self-study, genki has explanation in English. But which book is good depends on the person, so if you can go to a big bookstore, compare books there and choose one by yourself 😊

Wonderful video. Do Japanese children sing these characters in the same way that English speaking children sing the alphabet? At different points in the video, it struck me that there was something melodic about what you were saying -- beyond the obvious related sounds.

Children don't sing but just say these in order when they get in school. I guess one reason is that あ stands for あ sound in Japanese, but A(ei) doesn't stand for [ei] sound in English, and "a" can be read in many ways, so they have to know the name of the alphabet. The melody is called "pitch accent." Japanese is a pitch-accent language, so the melody is actually very important. My latest video deals with that. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rKlngJl-25e4l30.html

Thank you ma’am for this video. But I am still confused about the sound of the row R. While pronouncing the “ri” in the row we say “li” but while saying thank you in Japanese I’ve heard it as arigato where “li” is pronounced as “ri”. Could you please explain this? Thank you

@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally very much so! I struggled with words like べんり all the time because I wasn't able to understand how to get from the ん sound to the り sound. I'm still not sure I completely understand the し sound tbh but that's my fault lol Btw: if I'm correct, the u sound, for example in ふ, seems to be pretty close to the German ü like in "müde".🤔

Im still very confused with the ra ri re ro ru pronunciation :( often it sounds like a 'd', but when you pronounce ra, it sounds more like 'la' to me. Do you also touch the top of your mouth when pronouncing 'Ramen' ?

I think for the らりるれろ and also for ふ the only thing that helps is lots of listening. I watched many videos but for me it's the same every time. I understand when it's explained and I can copy the sound. But when it comes to an example suddenly it sounds completely different to me. In this video for example, ふ is explained to sound like "hu", not "fu". In the example word ふじさん it suddenly sounds like "fu". I can also see the lips touch each other as they do when you say "fu". Maybe it's difficult for a japanese native speaker to think about these sounds from a non japanese native mind. In the end there has to be a reason why ふ is written as "fu" instead of "hu".

I checked the video, but my lips aren't touching when I'm saying ふじさん 😅 And it's ふ, not "hu." I think romaji makes you confused and prevent you from hearing the real sound. It's best to think with ひらがな or カタカナ. Ganbattekudasai〜 😄

@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally Well, let me explain. 🤗 In English "ya, yu, yo" sound like 「や、ゆ、よ」, right? But in Spanish, "ya, yu, yo" sound like「じゃ、じゅ、じょ」！⚠️ I'm native Spanish speaker, so when I saw "ya, yu, yo" I pronpunced them like 「じゃ、じゅ、じょ」！！🖐🏻🖐🏻🤣😅 Some time after, I met a person on Periscope who taught me the right pronunciation for all hiragana characters!!! He became my teacher also. I was learnig japanese by myself (for 2 years). Thanks to my friend (teacher) I met many Japanse people who are now helping me everyday. I have improved a lot, but still, 僕はあまり上手ではありません。So, sorry if I commit mistakes. Also, I found you on Twitter ^^ I really appreciate your work. It takes time to do all what you do. For that I'm grateful! Sorry for writing a long comment.

For example, year is [jier](←I don’t have the right font for the upside-down e), so I got confused. You don’t have that problem I guess. You’ve been learning Japanese for 2 years! Thank you. I'm going to watch this several more times over the coming days. But I am a bit confused or I just can't hear to vowel sound. I don't hear い when you're pronouncing the vowels あいうえお. What I'm hearing is just あうえお. Are あ and い blended together to create one sound?

I don't think あ and い are blended. あい is a little bit sound like the alphabet "I," maybe that's why it's hard for you to hear ...?

@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally When I pronounce あ it's "ah", and when I pronounce い it sounds like "ee". So, I say "ah", brief pause, then "ee". However, it sounds like to me the "ah" and "ee" are combined ... "ahee"? I had to repeatedly pronounce あ and い over and over, faster each time then it started to come together. You said it sounds like "I " but I couldn't understand how. But that's until I start saying it faster and faster I realized the "I " you're referring to sounds differently than the way I pronounce "I ", because of my accent. Some people in the USA pronounce "I " the way you say it, however my "I " sounds a bit different, so that's why I couldn't hear it initially. It's still hard to kind of hear it but I understand now why difficult for me. Although, I have only watch about 3 to 4 different Hiragana pronunciation videos, you're the only person who renunciate あ and い like that. Is that from a different Japanese accent?

@Speak Japanese Naturally Oh something I forgot to ask. Are you saying each vowels (あ, い, う, え, お) independently and repeating them? Or, are you combing all vowels into one word (あいうえお) and pronunciation it as such? If you're saying it as one word then I completely understand.

Hi, I'm sorry for my late reply. I think I say あいうえお as one word. Also, it has a certain pitch accent, so I follow the accent. If you say あいうえお separately, there's no accent, so maybe other videos' あいうえお sound different from mine.

@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally Yup, that's exactly what I concluded. I've doing a bit more studying and the pronunciation and it became clear to me. I just so confused for a while because I though vowels would be like how with English vowels we say each individually (a, e, i, o, u). But I had to remember this a different language and there are different rules, so I'm getting the hang of it.
