I love ZZ Plants because they’re tough as nails, a snap to maintain & as handsome as can be. Mine has been growing like crazy so dividing it seemed to be a logical solution. It's 1 way of propagating a ZZ Plant.More details in the post: www.joyusgarde...

In late winter/early spring, my ZZ Plant started putting new growth in a big way. That new growth is spring green, as opposed to the older dark green foliage, so the plant was putting on a beautiful show. I decided to divide it into 3 plants so 1 could stay in the kitchen, another would head to my bedroom & the 3rd would go to Lucy.
I started by hoisting the plant out to my work table. It was extremely heavy because all the growth arises from underground rhizomes (they look like potatoes as the plant ages) which add quite a few pounds to a plant this size. This is a project I’d never done before & I wasn’t really sure how it would go. Without much prior thought, I jumped right in.
I used a planting mixture of 3/4 potting soil with 1/4 succulent & cactus mix. A few handfuls of compost were tossed in along the way as well as a 1″ layer of worm compost towards the top. This all ensures that the mix will drain really well (those thick, fleshy roots & rhizomes store water so this plant is subject to rot) yet is adequately & naturally nourished.
Hopefully, I won’t have to transplant the large one for a couple of years, but who knows. They certainly grow like a weed in these warm temps & a good dose of bright light!

Thanks Nell, I am going to move my ZZ to the kitchen, I absolutely love lush plants. I just bought a tractor seat plant and am going to divide it along the lines I can already see would make a good division. Now I'm off to see your staghorn fern as I like the look of them too. With your help I am becoming a better indoor gardener. Thanks xox

This plant doesn't need to be in well drained soil. I have one zz plant in a container that does not have any hole to drain. I water it once every 6 months and each time the water level is almost all the way to the top of the container. This plant is 12 years old now. :) A while back I went to an Asian restaurant that has a zz plant growing in water. So, this plant is so versatile that it can live with little or a lot of water.

Hello Nell. love love that big beautifull ZZ plant you have wish I could just come watch you do this transplant. I have two beautifull plants myself and will be transplanting one of them soon. thanks for this video. love love love that big ZZ plant wish I had one that size but mines are getting there. I do have three huge 7ft Ficus trees though including one verigated leaf and two non verigated. thanks Charleen

Hi Charleen - You're welcome! I'm sure your transplanting will go well. Ficus benjaminas (if that's the ficus you have) can be finicky after transplanting you you might loose some leaves. I've transplanted a few of them & they've been just fine. Best not to do it in the late fall / winter months. Nell

Hello Nell, thanks for the kind words . Yes I am referring to the Ficus Benjaminas indeed. I love them to bits and they bring back memories of home. I am from the Caribbean so yes Exotic plants were always a part of my Environment. I don't get a lot of fallen leaves and since I pruned them early Spring they are doing very well. Cheers Char.

I just tried to repot my ZZ Plant and as I removed the dirt my finger feel into a soft spot of the bulb and out came loads of slime. Is that normal? I was so freaked out I just cut all of the stems and I'm hoping I can propagate those successfully. What should I do the next time that happens with a different plant?

I just heard in another video the tubers (rhizomes) are a sign of watering issues and will kill a ZZ plant. Is that true?
@zambranoruby01

How long did it take for the tuber to heal over before you potted it? Did you have any root rot problems after because of the damaged tuber? I had a massive problem with my spider plant because of broken thick roots broken while I reported it.

Recommend, just skip most of the video, Its just silly story telling and babbling which has nothing to do with propagating the ZZ plant.... you forgot to tell that your mum's cat dies and thats why it didnt rain and you were sick and the camera, it all went wrong when the dog bit into it. Stop telling personal stories nobody is interested in. And what is it with all that silly body language and silly jokes? (Now you see me... now you dont) Make a 3 minute video out of it. That should contain everything important in the video. EASY THUMBS DOWN Didnt even bother to keep the root bulbs in one piece.
