This is a channel about crossbow hunting. This is not a channel about shooting big bucks. I don't discriminate--I'll shoot any legal deer. ;) But, sometimes, big bucks happen!
I want to help make KZfaq the #1 place for quality hunting entertainment. I want to help spread the hunting lifestyle. To do that, I set up this channel to showcase the crossbow and help others film their hunts and get those videos online. So, subscribe to this channel to be entertained and learn more about crossbows and filming in the outdoors.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester .30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
All Hail Bunjie!

Like I've said before, Rich, mechanical's are all the RAGE these days! My younger hunting buddies from the MRC, have all switched to expensive fixed heads like IRON WILL and MUZZY ONE, due to not getting pass troughs. I'm still a fixed fan, but have lots of RAGE heads both with and without collars in my tackle box. Might try them this fall on deer! And will let you know how it goes!

Hey Rich, If you get the chance you might want to try the Thorn HPX Broadhead. I switched to them before the last season and they are pretty awesome. The hidden blade technology allows you to practice with the same broadhead that you hunt with. I killed 3 deer with them this past season with zero problems at all.

I had heard a lot about the Rage when it first came out and was impressed with the cutting width. Until I actually shot a nice big doe with it. Just as you described it a small hole and no expansion. The recovered arrow showed no evidence of any expansion and I know where I hit her as it was just getting dark and I clearly watched the Luminock pass through at the "elbow" and exit out the off side. We looked until our flashlights died and went back the following day. I never found her (someone else did a week later) I did have occasion to shoot a second doe the next afternoon. This time it opened up and she totally bleed out within 30 yards. Same shot placement different results. Both at about 15 yards. I'd say I am soured on the mechanical broadheads. My son and his boys all swear by them and they shoot many more deer than I do ...guess I'm just set in my ways!

You can rotate nocks or arrow, see of that makes a difference with different vanes down. Or if 6" low every time, sight in for that broadhead so they fly dead on. Or switch broadheads. Weird though they flew great on mine but different in different rigs for sure.

Just purchase the Rage Hypodermic NC I find really good reviews on them and then others saying they never open on impact. I can take them back swap them out for the Rage Hypodermic with collars . I did read an article stating that these broad heads need a good power launch from the cross bow for them to open. I have plenty of punch shooting 390 fps that they may be just fine. Being now 2020 with rage having plenty of time test these heads you would think they would be perfected.

I am a fan of the 2-blade mechanical broadhead. Seems to put better blood on the ground. It’s true that not every broadhead will perform the same from every crossbow. The Toxic I used in my Crossbow were terrible after 15 yards. The problem with the Toxic is the lack of penetration. The cutting diameter is 7/8 of an inch. So don’t expect a huge blood trail. It works great on water gallons.

I re-watched this...I wasn't very clear. I don't re- use broadheads. I shot a lot of deer with that model of broadhead but a different one each time. So it was a brand new one that failed to open. Sorry about that.

I have shot several deer, a turkey, and gray fox with these broadheads. Installed correctly and none opened in any of the animals. I was shooting a 390 fps Xbow. I get a pass through using my block target every shot and either no blades opened or one would. After several phone called to Rage and sent photos of my animals and target with the broadhead not opening they replaced them after a few seasons of non stop failures with the no collar versions. I will try them in my block and if they open 10 out of 10 times I’ll try them if not their going in the garbage. I did buy a pack of the flimsy black collars meant for low poundage bows and tried them, they don’t open in flight and completely open as soon as they hit the block. Rage told me they will own in flight with my xbow velocity. Probably just not going to open my replacement NC versions and sell them off. To many bad experiences with them. All game was recovered. I have photos of the animals with field point looking in and out holes to prove it. Even have a photo of the heart of one showing it never opened. My guess is my 390 fps xbow with a155 pound draw weight is to weak to deploy the red collar versions, I see I’m not the only one with the same issues. Their are a lot of posts on forums showing the blades don’t open in block type targets. Rage told me that’s normal not to open in block targets and they will own in deer. That is not normal. I've been bowhunting since the 70s. The first expandable broadheads came lut in the 80s and ive owned almost every one along the way. Every expandable broadhead I've tried opened by the time is passed through a block type target accept for this red collar rage. I have photos up on predator masters forum over the years with a few broadheads that didn't open or fail. Feel free to look. Wasn't opererator or shooter error but just plain broadhead design failure. That red collar is just made out of way to hard of plastic for my 390 fps and 315 fps xbows. I'm sure in a high 400 fps xbow with alot more energy it would probably open fine.

They shouldn't open in your block, typically. No idea what's going on here, I had 100% success with them, and pretty sure I wouldn't use them over and over if they failed every time. Sorry to hear about your troubles!

@@Deathbybunjie yep, I should have quit after the first two deer I shot with them but Rage told me to try them without hand tightening them down so hard. Didn’t think I did to begin with. So I shot a turkey , grey fox, and another deer last season with them and none opened. Lesson learned. Just not a reliable broadhead for me and a lot of others. There are tons of posts about the red collars not opening. Imo they probably open reliably with Xbows that have a lot more kinetic energy than my Stryker sl390 and Horton Hunter has. Tried them in two Xbows with the exact same results.I’m sure a quick google of rage xbow hypodermic failure will produce many show and tells like min along with the photos I posted. Anyways, some have good luck with them but to my the are 100% unreliable. I’ll stick with what works which is the Gator style that has free floating blades. They open 200% percent of the times no matter what they are shot out of. Been shooting mechanicals since they first were introduced to market. Have a few of the originals left. They all will fail at one point if you shoot enough game to test them on. I’d tell you to get some under 400 fps Xbows and test them on deer and tell me how they didn’t work for you. I still have the broadheads. Rage told me to keep them. Anyone is invited over for a show and test along with testing. It’s the only mechanical I have never had expand going into and also through a foot plus thick block target. To me that spells failure right off the bat. Rage is well aware of it after my last conversation with them. Anyways, love your videos but the red xbow collars are a failure for many besides me.

@@Deathbybunjie my only guess is you get way more energy to help open the blades with recurve limbs? The other thing I've noticed over thr decade with 2" and larger mechanical broadheads is the gator non locking blade style heads give me a pass through 99.9% of the time. The rage, grim reaper, and other styles normally don't exit and stop with going through the opposite side stopping on the ribs. My biggest concern. I like a pass through for good a decent blood.

@@tripplebeards3427 i doubt it, once the arrow leaves the crossbow, energy is energy. I suppose recurve vs compound might affect PREMATURE opening but not opening at target. consistently not opening time and time again tells me it's something else--maybe you had knock offs or (not pointing fingers, but...) user error. These are the most popular broadheads ever sold, after all. the archery world has used these with great success from 250 to 450 fps, year after year. BUT if they're not working for you, by all means look elsewhere! 100%

lol Dude you totally did this incorrectly. THe shock collar has notches in then which is supposed to align with the mechanical hooks on the broadhead. To accomplish this, there is an indicator on the collar the is supposed to point straight up to help align the notch. I am very surprised that you are saying that your broadheads are actually opening because you are doing it wrong.
