How To PROPERLY Spray Paint! - WRX STi Ft Workshop Pure Sound - Well this week I'm going to be showing you my process for properly painting car parts and achieving a professional finish as well as providing a nice ASMR experience with the pure workshop sounds. What gives you the right to say that I hear you say? Well I am a professionally trained painter that's been in the game 20 years and have painted just about every make of car and bike out there so I'd say that makes me pretty qualified lol.
So anyway the parts in for painting are all Genuine Subaru Impreza WRX STi body panels that will all be fitted to my car in the near future but first they need a fresh coat of spray paint.
First up, remove all the stickers and decals from the panels along with any adhesive and tar spots that get left behind, I usually deal with these with a wipe down with panel wipe or thinners if its really stubborn glue. After that the parts and all ready for a good sanding now what grade you use depends on your initial paint layer and since mine is going to be a black primer I will be using a mix of 240 and 320 grit to prep the full panels and 320 working up to 1200 on the outer blend edge of the bumper as i will be blending the repair into the surrounding rather than wasting spray paint painting the full panel when it doesn't need it.
So once sanded and cleaned again the parts are primed with a black primer, there is a good reason for this and if you know why leave me a comment below and I'll be sure to let you know if you're correct. When the parts have had 3 coats and an appropriate drying time the parts are sanded once again to give them a totally flat finish with no defects so the basecoat of paint lays down beautifully.
The basecoat spray paint is 02C world rally blue from Subaru and is what their most iconic rally winning cars are painted in except for the early cars they were painted the darker 555 blue but lets not get into that, 3 coats of this were applied to all the parts except the bumper which was given 3 coats plus an additional 4th blend coat to make the repair area invisible.
Then it was simply a case of applying 3 good coats of nice UV stable clear coat to protect the finish for many years to come and after a little assembly work we are all done and dusted.
so I hope you've enjoyed this little video showing how I PROPERLY Spray Paint car parts and will leave a comment, hit that like and subscribe button and tell all your friends about my channel.

After 50 years of painting, I can confidently say my best paint work is the: "how in the name of all that's holy did that overspray get on that part way the heck over there!!!?" I swear, the overspray always sticks like glue to dusty old parts covered in wax, grease and oil ten feet away, but chips off my carefully prepped parts if I so much as look at them wrong, lol. That blue is amazing!

The Black primer is to aid coverage. It won't change the actual colour. This colour calls for a grey shade #3 in the DeBeer paint system. Been painting 25 years. Just to be clear I'm in no way whatsoever knocking the work or how he goes about his achievements. This man is a full on genius as far as I'm concerned, my fave all time was the Ducati Yellow restoration.

I'm pretty sure it's to give the correct tone, another way is to paint a different colour base coat before a main/top coat and obvs then before the clear coat. Using a different colour primer means you don't need a base coat too.
@lo666zz
@lo666zz Жыл бұрын
There is only the colour.. The tone will not change unless you actually tint the top colour with a different tinter. I.E.. if you put in more of a red toned Blue it will look more violet. It works in light refraction. The top colour is the top colour. You could put 10 coats on and it will still be the top colour. See my comment regarding a grey shade base.

@@lo666zz My bike requires a primer, the correct base coat and main coat before clear to acquire the correct colour, otherwise it's a real pain to colour match.

Different system that's called a 3 Layer Pearl coat. Which is true that's why alot of bikes have really vibrant clear looking colours. The latest Mazda Soul red crystal 46V is even a 4layer system an inter coat clear is tinted to give the candy effect.

Black primer is used if you're painting your part a very dark color, or if you're painting with metallics. With a black primer, you won't require as many coats of base, when that base is a darker color. It can also help your car's paint look deeper and rich.

Black primer is to reduce the amount of base color needed. Sometimes the primer color affects your basecoat. Thats a lesson I learned the hard way when my 2k rally red came out too dark on my Skoda Octavia. Skoda originally used a beige primer which helps with the brightness of the later applied red basecoat. So for light colors it pays off to use a light primer.

Answer- Black over Gray- Gray primer could cause an issue with color blending. Just a note- The process used is flawless on newer cars due to clearcoat, Imron or Acrylic based paints. Some of the best advances have been made in paint finishes over the past 30 years. However, the process will not work on any Enamel, Lacquer or Candy finishes. This is due to the prep work and they tend to be more transparent paints. While the basecoat/clearcoat paint system is far superior to conventional one-coat enamel paints in many respects, it has a few disadvantages. The clearcoat has a greater tendency to show marring when rubbed by foreign materials. Finally, excessive polishing a car with clearcoat on it can remove a good part of the finish along with its built-in UV protectants. Restoring F bodies since 1979. Very nice job !!!!

Why don't you start a school? Like seriously! I've been watching your channel for years now and I've learned a lot because you explain a lot of things extremely well, and I started doing some restoration too, but paint part is extremely difficult. I tried to search for a school where they would teach you how to paint, but they are 2-3 years long. If you could start a school that would be very intense and a few months long (without giving a certificate) that'd be great and I'm sure tons of people would apply to a course like that.

I'm guessing the black primer sealer was to achieve better color match. There are instances when paint manufactures call out such details for a troublesome color. If the desire was a "deeper" color I would expect the entire bumper to be sealed prior to base coat.

Hey what has your past experience been with paint strippers? I am doing a restoration of my whole underside of my car which involves complete derusting and stripping to bare metal. I've already sanded a whole lot down by hand but it's a very tedious and long process doing it that way and there are only few occasions that I can fit an electric tool to make it a little bit easier. That's why I bought myself some paintstripper. According to the instructions it takes about 15 minutes for it to react and loosen the paint. I did that and it didn't react even a little bit with the paint. So then I scuffed up the paint with some 40 grit sandpaper and tried it again. Same results. Even after covering it with plastic foil and leaving it overnight it didn't react with the paint whatsoever. Is it too cold inside the garage maybe? Is it not aggressive enough I don't know. Maybe you can help me somehow or recommend a good paint stripper🙏

do you use any plasticizer when painting plastics? Especially on bumpers which are quite flexible and normal paint would crack/flake. About the black primer, I believe it's preferred when using dark colors. A lighter primer would show through requiring many more coats of blue, which is wasteful and time consuming.

Cheers buddy. Its actually for better coverage the paint will always be the same shade/ colour but instead of 3 coats with black you'd be up around 8 coats with a grey or light primer not to mention matching the other panels would be a pain as in this scenario I was doing full panels so no reference point to tell me that I'd reached proper coverage, where as I know from experience 3 coats and 1 blend coat with this colour on black base gives you the perfect match..... but there are exceptions to this rule of course lol
