I've used a combination of all the techniques you've described here while building model kits! Especially in the early days - childhood - when I built them as soon as I brought them home. These days I open the box when I buy them but the build might happen years afterwards!

A great fun “with my morning coffee” video! I liked the tongue-in-cheek, casual presentation showing how to get familiar and at ease with your kit. An encouraging method of diving into a first kit! Wish I’d been so relaxed with my first kit…back in 1959! Well done ! 👍🏼

I have two good friends that I have known for 20ish years now. They are having health issues and are having trouble building. Both are selling kits out of their collections because they can't build them all. One can still build but is focusing on his favorites.

Newbie here, Quick question when swaping out a 396 included in 1/25 '66 Impala kit (diy 4 door hardtop, gift for a friend as a memorial to her Dad - & their car) for the 66 Malibu 427, do I just swap out engine/trany or some of the other components as well. Thanks /Rosemary

Thanks. This video was more of a joke as we were all beginners once. On your question… This really depends on what the engine you are try to replicate really looks like. In stock form a 427 doesn’t really look different from a 396. So if there’s was stock looking you really don’t need to change anything. But if it was modified for racing then yes. The engine in the 66 Malibu is hopped up with some race parts so you could if you wanted to.

Excellent Raoul and very funny! Yep you pretty much nailed everything, maybe you could make another video called 'How To: Improperly Start a Model Kit'. That video could include things like using clamps, rubber bands, crazy glue, mismatched primer and paints, attempting scratch builds or modifications way too soon and of course cutting EVERYTHING off the sprues, throwing everything loosely into the box without taping it shut and finally tossing the 'instructions' (destructions) because really what builder needs to read it BEFORE starting. I love youtubers who say 'I'll edit that out' but never do! Thanks for showing us the 'correct' way to get started. I've known modelers who got started on twenty or more kits but never got finished building any of them.

I have a few more spoof ideas. How to glue a model kit together is one of them!
@animalyze7120
@animalyze7120 Жыл бұрын
You'd be very wrong on many of those so called improper methods. Might wanna win a few events then try again on this comment. Crazy glue is the better method as it's shear strength is very low and a falling model will break at this glue joint rather than snap a solid part (This is the old school method for show car builders). On the shelf never go anywhere spray painted kits can use the cheapo plasti weld glues and collect dust as usual, no issues there. As I said more research before the mouth is a great starting point. Also crazy glue allows the kits in their entirety to be broken back down with ZERO fuss and rebuilt again if ever needed. There's a reason for such things not just opinions.
@TheMuscleCarModeler
@TheMuscleCarModeler Жыл бұрын
Ok Animalyze71, So, you didn't get the spoof part of this. I use super glue on my models after paint and white glue on clear parts. I don't really care about trophies but have many of them. I like to build for me and not to win a contest.
@neiljumpinjackflash7551
@neiljumpinjackflash7551 Жыл бұрын
@@animalyze7120 You took the spoof personal. None of it was meant seriously. I build kits for me and not to win trophies, it's not a SPORT, it's a hobby for me. Crazy glue has it's place in the hobby. Personally I use it to hold parts together while the styrene glue dries and hardens. Styrene glue was produced by the model kit industry for styrene, crazy glue wasn't. But I've see all kinds of cement used to assemble a model from rubber cement, white glue, future floor wax glue and even melted plastic sprue-glue. I've heard that some modelers will put a built kit in a freezer, then drop it on the floor and the styrene glue breaks at the joints, Zero fuss and rebuilt again as needed. Yeah I get it there is a method to your madness.
@animalyze7120
@animalyze7120 Жыл бұрын
@@neiljumpinjackflash7551 The only benefit of crazy glue is you can take the whole kit back down to parts at the same time you strip all the paint. It also has horrid shear strength which means the parts break at the glue joint not on the more fragile ends, should it get dropped. It's mostly for show cars, shelf warmers are fine with good ol plasti weld glues.

@TheMuscleCarModeler
@TheMuscleCarModeler 7 ай бұрын
I use super glue all the time. It's mandatory if you use resin or 3D printed parts. It works on plastic as well but just a few things to know. Use the least amount of glue possible. It will fog areas as it dry's (gasses out). Don't use it on clear parts and don't glue your finger to the door! I have done that too! I like to put masking tape on my workbench and put a drop of super glue on the tape. Two reasons for that. One is you can better control how much you use. The other is it sometimes will burp as you squeeze the tube. You don't want that splatter on your model. Then I take a toothpick and pick up a small amount of glue and apply it to the part I want to glue.

In my experience studying math sharpens the mind in a general way (not just a much needed skill). I am 75. I hated school. I loved learning. I was poor at math and reading (probably from refusing to do homework, and I now think I had ADHD). I knew about the math, but not the reading, before college (Baylor, Alabama, and Duke). During my college days I took Evelyn Wood speed-reading courses. It helped. I have always thought, but haven't checked it out, that something equivalent would be good for children. If a person can master (really internalize), from the get -go, math and reading skills, it make everything else a piece of cake!!! Always feel free to contact me. I wish you and yours's all the best. This is just simple math but the teacher says most kids his age can’t do that.

I’ve got a question, and I wanted to ask someone who’s been doing this for awhile, so I hope you don’t mind me bothering you for a little schooling. I’m recently retired and getting back into modeling between my honeydew list, so I’m learning all over again. I live in the south and we’ve gotten a LOT of rain here in the last week. So, now my question. The humidity is at least 70% right now and I’ve had some issues in the past with that. I don’t have a garage, basement, or a dedicated room, like you rich guys do, just kidding, no offense intended, for my building so I paint out in my shed. Sorry, now here’s my question. Do you think that if I primer and paint outside and immediately bring my body inside that the paint will come out alright? BTW. I paint with enamel rattle cans. I haven’t worked up to buying an airbrush system yet. And that brings up another question. I’ve listened to quite a few videos here and wondered if I could, would, maybe get better results from using an airbrush? I’ve only completed one model so far and had issues with the paint on it, from what I’ve understood was because the body was molded in red and I didn’t get enough primer on it. Thank you in advance for any ad all help you can give.
@TheMuscleCarModeler
@TheMuscleCarModeler 26 күн бұрын
I’m sorry but I’m not much help on your issues. While I highly recommend an airbrush it does come with lots of learning and patience. Cleaning, set up, thinning the paint and overall technique will all have to be figured out and no two people will do all this the same. Environmental issues do play a role as well and that is what I have no real experience with humidity. I really don’t use spray paints. They were horrible 30 years ago when I got my first air brush. I know they have gotten better but once you learn an airbrush, you won’t go back. As for humidity, I live in the Phoenix AZ area and that’s something we lack here. Our problem is paint can dry to fast here!

@TheMuscleCarModeler
@TheMuscleCarModeler 5 ай бұрын
With paint you get what you pay for and it’s getting more expensive. That goes for real car paint as well. When I painted my Chevelle 10 years ago. I spent $2600 for 2 gal of primer, 2 qt of sealer, 3 qt of paint and 1 gal of clear plus all the hardeners and thinners. Last year I bought just one gal of the same primer for a 64 VW bug. That plus hardener was 800 alone! Almost 3x what it was then! But Testor’s bottle paint was .99 then and now $2.79 for the same! Brush cleaner was 1.89 before covid and is now 5.99! I started using air brushes 30 years ago because I couldn’t get any good spray paints. The Tamiya spray paints are great. Testors have improved but still not to my liking. If you are staying with spray paint. Once you use a Tamiya can you will forget about the price difference. On real cars. I don’t buy the cheap stuff anymore. I have been using Shirwin Williams auto paint for years on my projects. I’ll tell you. I used the cheaper Dimension line and black used to be 80 a quart. I was told use the better quality Ultra 7000 line. That was 179 at the time for a quart. So I gave it a try and found that even though it was a little more than twice the price it sprayed better, dried faster and covered 3x the material!

Ralph, I like you, I appreciate you're videos. I'm trying to help. The biggest negative thing, which you can easily correct is clean hands. Watched a vid where you said you have a 3yo son. I know you want the best for him. One of the best things you could do for him is use correct grammar. Please work on this. I wish you the best.

Why did you waste your money on a sprue cutter if you aren't going to use it for it's intended purpose? A sprue cutter will give you nice clean separation from the sprue. Also, you shouldn't be so Blaise about the instructions. I can't believe you know where every part of every car goes. "Oh, wait, it's not on the chrome tree?". If he had looked at the instructions he would have known. Why not finish the kit? You must have a lot sitting around unfinished.
