How to Properly Tie a Kayak Anchor Using a Anchor Knot and a Zip Tie

In this video, I show how to tie an anchor so that lost anchors from being snagged are virtually eliminated. This method will save tons of time freeing a stuck anchor and answers that question about why there is a hole on the bottom (or back) of folding anchors and bruce anchors. This is not the only way to rig this up, but it's cheap. You can use anchor trip links with and without chain, but at the cost of a zip tie, this method is hard to beat for lighter gear used in kayaks and a lot of freshwater boats.

Good Video. I'd add a few points though. Just remember that you loose all leverage on the anchor when your floating in a kayak. Use the smallest zip tie you can find or you may not be able to apply enough force to break it. ( I've found 10# mono to work good too.) Also, always try to pull in line with the length of the kayak and not off the side otherwise you stand a good chance of rolling over when that connection suddenly breaks.

Uhmmm... this is great and all but you will lose the top ring of the anchor setup if you have to snap off the cable tie to release the anchor. Need to leave a shackle on the top ring as well so you don't loose the ring off of your anchor. Then you can attach the line to the shackle at the top of the anchor.

Zip ties are very strong even small ones. If you are in a kayak pulling on your anchor rope trying to break the tie there is a REAL possibility of tipping over. A lot of pressure has to be used to break the tie. Trust me, done it. Use thin string or light mono.

5 years later you're still helping folks with this video. I finally got an anchor for my fishing kayak, I fish near a lot of waterfalls and the currents are always dragging me all over the place. I'm about to use this method thanks again

I know this video is 6 years old, but I just wanted to add my thanks to TheManCave for putting this up. I have recently started fishing more from my kayak and added an anchor just like the one in the video to the boat. It wasn't long before the anchor became hopelessly stuck at about 30 feet down. I struggled with it for a while and experienced all the dangers of trying to pull hard from a kayak. I had no choice but to cut it free and lose 30 feet of rope plus the anchor.

It's a good idea to use another D shackle at the top to prevent the possibility of losing the locking ring.

Just bought an anchor just like this for my kayak. The instructions that came with it were terrible. Found this video and made perfect sense. Thank you!
