Love this, exactly what I needed to hear! My lease horse is lazy and he's older (in his 20's) so I have been guilty of thinking "oh it's just how he is." When I rode him yesterday I made him work a bit harder and didn't let him slack off, and his trot was significantly better! I didn't have to constantly work on pushing him forward to have an actual working trot. I definitely need to work on improving his walk though as he still plods along most of the time and slows down as soon as I stop applying more leg. With consistency I now know he will improve because I've told him he needs to work, instead of allowing him to slack off!

I have a lazy, lazy horse and I finally twigged that in my walk warmup, I can ask for activity and start pushing him around with short bursts of shoulder in etc - then I start my trot work and try maintain the activity. If he is sticky, I use the canter to improve the forward inclination. I think a lazy horse is way more difficult than a too-forward horse and much harder work!

Great advice I had a lazy horse in my lesson the other day. Soon as he realised I wouldn't tolerated him he would snapped out of it

I have a nearly 23 y/o (that's more sound than most 10+ year old horses I know shhh) and this video is FILLED with potentially helpful tips!! Once my meniscus stops misbehaving I'll be trying these!! Like this comment to remind me to watch it later, lol

Do you have video on the double bridle? I would like to learn how to use. When using snaffle somtimes its not enough for my horse. But using a shank bit , I feel he don't always need. So I thought a double bridle might be something to try. So that way I could use what bit he needs.

how to make a halfhalt and make the horse think forwards?

The biggest misunderstanding here is the term 'half halt'. The half halt is such a silly term for someone to have come up with. There is nothing 'half' about it, and there is definitely no 'halt' or stop in it. This is where people get so confused - they think we are half stopping or asking the horse to wait and then release. NO - actually the half halt is about rebalancing. This is why people struggle with the half halt - how to I stop them but think forward? That's counter intuitive and doesn't make sense? Guess what - you are correct! It doesn't make sense! What you are doing constantly is rebalancing the horses body in it's entirety, so that he is on his train tracks and has even weight in all 4 legs. That is a half halt.
