This video will show you how to properly wire your OPT7 Aura interior kit so that the door assist works and the unit is powered under a variety of conditions.
* Unlock car (and dome lifght comes on) - LED lights come on (white) -- ie "door assist"
* Start/run car - (dome light goes out) LED lights turn to your color selection
* Stop car (ignition off, dome lights come on), LED lights turn to white -- "door assist"
* Lock car, (dome lights go off) LED lights automatically shut off
When the car is not running, the OPT7 LED lights go on and off *whenever the dome light does**. Note, this does *NOT require you to manually turn off the light kit with the remote- which is the only solution the OPT7 company tells you to do. I find that ridiculous.
You will need to buy some parts. You should be comfortable with electronic wiring projects and soldering. And you need to know how to read a wiring diagram. All information, including an easy-to-read wiring diagram, is in the video. The wiring diagram is at the very end, pause the video and take a screenshot to print it.
Enjoy!
I created this video to share how to make this nice wiring product work correctly.

DISCLAIMERS:
I am not an electronics expert. I have dabbled with electronics here and there, mostly just building projects given a diagram. EVERY vehicle is different. I do not know, for example, how the electronics of the dome light work in YOUR car. I am happy to try to answer questions, and will do my best to answer.

This is exactly what I was wanting when I started looking for interior automotive LED lighting. I bought the OPT7 kit because it said it could be setup to react to the door switch. Only to find out that it doesn't quite do what I wanted it to do. So instead of just installing it anyway, I sat on it for weeks trying to think of how to get it to work the way I wanted. I found your video and literally shouted "Yes"! I just finished it up and installed it all a couple days ago and it's awesome! Mine only reacts to the door opening though, since my 30 year old vehicle is bare bones with no keyless entry. It's now doing exactly what it should be able to do right out of the box. It was kind of a fun custom wiring project too. Very satisfying results. Thanks a lot, Kent. (and whoever the genius electrician guy is that figured this out)

Kent, thank you so much for your informative video. I have the Opt7 Aura original underglow kit with door assist and followed your diagram for wiring with 2 relays. Unfortunately as others have commented, the door assist (right-sided relay on the diagram) isn't functioning as expected. It seems the relay doesn't trigger with the dome light. My understanding of relays suggests that pin 87 should become active when current flows from pin 86 to 85. However, the dome light applies power to pin 85 and ground, with no current flowing between 86 and 85. The relays remains unstimulated and pin 87 remains inactive. I appreciate your diagram and the insights it provides as I continue brainstorming with my project.

Hey kent thank you for the video and diagram! I have it all wired but im concerned that i may not have the black wires coming out of the relays correct. The black wire from the continious power relay gets split to two legs one with the diode and one with the capacitor. Does the leg with the capacitor get spliced into the the other intermittent relay then get grounded? The leg with the diode gets connected to the positive of the dome light or door switch correct?

Thanks for the wiring diagram. If you have the OPT7 turned off with remote, then lock car and unlock car, does door assist turn on regardless? Then when you start the car the lights stay off both dome obviously and colour? Until you turn on the remote. I know you can get same result by not connecting ignition power but still want the option of having colour on whilst driving. Because it is illegal to be on while driving in my country.

First off, this is a VERY good video and I am so happy you created it. I would be stumped without you! I know this video was created around 2-3 years ago but I really would like to know if there is a way I can make the LEDs only turn on when the door opens with a switch? My first thought was to wire the LEDs to the dome light and directly control it through the switch attached to it but I am worried about overloading that circuit and causing a fire. I looked online after that and I found your video. I would like there to be a switch that, when flipped, allows the leds to only be door assist (meaning when I turn the ignition on, the LEDs turn off with the dome light). Is there a way that I can do this? If you are seeing this, thanks for the tutorial!

Refer to the diagram. To answer your first queston, the capacitor and diode connect to the black wire of the BATTERY relay, not the IGN relay. (The capacitor other side is grounded, and diode other side goes to the dome). You can try tapping the door switch instead of the dome light--- but I'm not sure how that works for your car. My car doesn't HAVE a door switch, the door sense mechanism is built into the lock. At a minimum, that will change the behavior (will only light up white when door is actually open and no other time). In my case, by tapping to dome light , the lights come on as soon as I unlock my car with the remote for example, because that's when the dome light comes on. Your mileage may vary, each car is different.

Thank you, that makes sense if I want the led to activate when I open the door lock with the remote. Going back to the diode and capacitor. my understanding is that the positive side of the capacitor connects to the black wire (-) of the relay for the dome light and the negative side connects to the door switch (-). The diode (anode (+) side) also connects to the black wire of the relay and the cathode (-) connects to the door switch (-). With that said, can both wires meet at the door switch (diode and capacitor)? I appreciate your help so much. Thank you.

I have a quick question. I see you wired the aux wire to the dome light. Towards the end of the video when you are showing the control box location I see there is a courtesy light next to the box´s installation site. If that courtesy light turns on when you open the doors (which I believe is the same concept for the dome light) why not use that lamp to hook up your aux wire? less wiring and a whole lot more accessible in my opinion. Besides that, your video was great! very detailed and easy to follow!
@caseybea2
@caseybea2 3 жыл бұрын
I thought about the courtesy light, but there were two things. First and more important, I could NOT for the life of me get the courtesy light bracket/mount removed. That would have been necessary for me to properly get in there and solder in a good connection. I spent over an hour trying and simply gave up. And I'm very tall so soldering something under the dash where it is would have been.. tricky. But second, the courtesy light under there in my car behaves a little differently from the dome light. Doesn't come on in certain situations wheras the dome light always comes on even when I press the remote unlock.

Door assist is not grounded. Attach it as shown in the diagram shown in the video.

@@caseybea2 Thanks for all your help Kent Brodie. It is much appreciated. Should I connect the Door Assist Positive (+) to the Negative Ground of the Dome Light and then just tape off the Door Assist Negative (-) wire and leave it hanging ungrounded? Sorry to inconvenience you.

Yes, the lights go "white" when the car is unlocked and also the door opened (AND ALSO the dome light tirned on manually). All other times, the OPT7 kit is whatever color you had it set to.
