Thank you! I have a 12 year old hydrangea that desperately needs trimmed but I've been scared to cut it in fear it won't bloom. I cut it back the wrong way before and it didn't bloom for a whole year. This was very helpful and I am much more confident in doing it now!

Thank you so much! Previously I watched few other videos on the subject, and I was more confused about the pruning than when I started. We also have a HUGE hydrangea which was there when we bought the house. I don't think it was pruned for a long time and I want to give her a facelift without destroying it. After I watched your video, I am pretty confident that I can do it> Thanks again for the clear straight forward explanation about how to practically do it. May God bless you & happy gardening!

Just what I needed to know. Suggestion - would be to show how your plant looked after the deep pruning. Also, I have a problem with spotted leaves and plant turning brown.

Those can be pruned pretty hard. Cut them back to about 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) above the ground. Then remove anything diseased, damaged, or dead from what remains. Happy gardening!

Great video! I have some hydrangeas that are way too large and are encroaching on the house. Do you have any suggestions for that? Can you over prune a hydrangea?
@plantsandprosecco7347
@plantsandprosecco7347 Жыл бұрын
Hi, Lynne! You could take them back as far as their first string bud on each stalk. You could also try cutting them back by half this year as a test. You just want to make sure you’re always cutting above a strong bud so the plant still has active growth points. You might sacrifice a few blooms this year, but it will help keep the size in check.

Any tips on an old wood hydrangea that is over taking the sidewalk at the end of summer? Husband wants it to be cut back so it doesn’t overgrow every year.
@plantsandprosecco7347
@plantsandprosecco7347 Жыл бұрын
Hi, Melissa! I would wait until it goes dormant and give it a light prune in late fall/early winter just to get it out of your way. Then, when it starts to bud in spring, you can cut it back farther if you want. I wouldn’t go deeper than half the size in the spring (cutting it back by a third would be safest). Just cut it above a set of buds and you’ll be good to go.

my hydrangesa is going on 4 years, it blossom the 2nd year, maybe 2 on the 3rd year. ive questioned if getting to much sun, and if it needs to be moved. so i don't have any left over blooms. I live in michigan, and just checking this week, i have new growth on all the "old wood" how do i determine this adventure. and would you suggest moving, it getting about 8 hours sun. thank you. most helpful video

Do you prune them? If so how much are you cutting back? Do you know what kind of hydrangea it is? I’m wondering if it might be one that grows on new growth and could use a harder prune than what I did here. Where are you located? Here in the southern US, our hydrangeas like a little protection. This one gets maybe 4 hours of direct sunlight and does fine.

I did 2 springs ago, and i didn't get ANY blossoms. all i remember its a Japanese one, it doesn't get very big. sorry. I attempted to have info by plant but of course grew legs and walked away. The plant is about 3 x 3 at this point, and looking at tips, does have green attempting to bud. Thank you for your reply.

Hmm, if it has bloom tips, it seems like it should be happy. Before you move it, maybe text your soil and see if there are any deficiencies you might be able to correct. If not, then it couldn’t hurt to move it. Sometimes plants just don’t like a spot even if it seems like they should. Just make sure you get as much of the roots as you can and keep it well watered until it can root in again.

Question: my hydrangeas have a mix of deadblooms from last year and new growth + full blooms from this year, should I prune the dead blooms or wait to prune them all next year? 🤔
@plantsandprosecco7347
@plantsandprosecco7347 2 жыл бұрын
Is there new growth on the dead stalks? If not, it should be fine to prune them out. If the old bloom stalks have new growth on them, I would just deadhead the old blooms to tidy up the plant and do a more in depth prune next spring. Thanks for watching and good luck!

What happens if old wood hydrangeas are pruned to the ground? My landscaper cut mine to almost to the ground even though I asked him not to. There are a few leaves growing but I’m afraid the bushes are ruined.

Fertilize it and keep it well watered. You won’t get blooms this year, but if you can keep the roots healthy and unstressed, it may come back for blooms next year.
