My husband decided to "prune" my favorite hydrangea plant (round flowers) back by removing ALL of the "wooden sticks" this year. Basically, removing all of the flowers for this year. 😬These blooms fill my house with flowers for several months each year. I guess I'll have to buy flowers this year!! I have saved this video for him to watch, so thank you!!

Tell your husband he killed your flowers so he needs to buy you more bushes now or cut flowers twice per week this year. By the way, Menards home improvement has the original Endless summer hydrangeas hardy to -30degrees that were 25.99 two weeks ago but three years ago Bloomstravaganza were 27.99each with same hardiness

I am looking forward to having vases of flowers in a month or so!! This year I’m learning how to propagate hydrangeas. We have a gorgeous purple one that I would love more plants from. FYI, I live in the south, so we don’t have a Menards..😩

My H. paniculata never grew well or had much blooms when pruned like is said here (one third or one half). Until I started to only snip off the old blooms and little brown stem later in spring, when the new leaves and buds were already out. Now it grows beautifully tall and big and healthy, and I have more blooms each year! :)

I have 2 hydrangea plants that were grown from cuttings last season. Bought them when they were pretty small still. I brought both inside to my basement for the winter(I live in Minnesota) since I didn't think they were quite ready to be put in the ground when it got cold. They stayed in a hibernation mode until about 2 months ago. At first they were fine and growing new stalks well. Then I noticed curling leaves and wilting. I changed pots w fresh soil and fertilizer when I saw how poor they looked. We had a major swing in Temps last week up into the 80s for about 6 days and it's back to cold and snow. I took them outside for the day during that 6 days. One of the plants was far worse than the other. After going outside the healthy looking one started to look like it's sibling. I've tested the soil in the pots and amending the shortness of nutrients and checked ph which was fine. The one that got sick first lost all new shoots and the buds on the old wood started to yellow and die. I've cut back that one to the closest healthy looking buds on the old wood part. Any suggestions to help get these guys growing and healthy again?

It sounds like you are doing everything right! The only remedy at this point that I could offer is patience! I am hoping that once temps become more consistent, they will put on new growth and eventually be able to be planted outdoors. How did the roots look now?
@brieanastraiton3665
@brieanastraiton3665 Жыл бұрын
@Gardeningknowhow omg thanks for actually answering my question!! Roots looked pretty good when I transplanted to the fresh soil. Did my best to clean out the old soil but I wasn't able to spray them clean like I usually would. I kinda figured patience was all I could do now. But it's always good to ask the pros on stuff I'm not super versed at. Only been doing the gardening thing for 2 years. Technically this will be my 3rd growing season. Trying to turn my brown thumb green lol.

Excellent video, thank-you. Question: I’ve picked up some aluminum sulphate I’d like to try this year. Do I fertilize first and then apply it, vice versa, or combine? If separately, how many days apart? New growth has begun on my plant so it’s time to get started. Thank-you again.
@Gardeningknowhow
@Gardeningknowhow Жыл бұрын
Hi Mary! Happy to help. The answer would depend on on the type of fertilizer applied. If the fertilizer contains sulfur then you would need to calculate the total amount of sulfur you would be applying to not over exceed the recommended amount. Also, if the fertilizer contains a high level of phosphorus, it would "tie up" the aluminum making it unavailable to the plant.

Hydrangeas can certainly be finicky! While pruning, cold weather and nutrient levels can impact bloom production, sometimes all a hydrangea needs is a new planting spot! Time and time again I have seen improvement by just moving the plant to a new spot in the landscape.

Great info thanks so much but I do have a question that wasn't answered in video: if I don't prune them end of July, what do I do with spent blooms of my mophead/ bighead hydrangea that are still on the shrub in the spring? Just leave them on ? Not very pretty and every time I've pruned them in the spring they don't bloom ☹
@Gardeningknowhow
@Gardeningknowhow Жыл бұрын
The stems that should be cut out in the spring are very woody and somewhat hollow, even lighter gray in color. The difference between these very old stems and newer stems should be distinguishable. Pruning is also not necessary for this group. This video may also help with pruning tips: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bpaelpBlvsXaeYk.html

Please emphasize that some hydrangeas bloom on old wood and should be pruned directly after blooming. If they are bloomed in the #spring they will not bloom at all that season. I had som3one prune my lilac in the early spring and it stopped blooming for 2 seasons. It is very important to know if your bush blooms on old or new wood.

My son gsve me a beautiful white mophead type hydrsngea in March for mother's day. It was in glorious full bloom with msny flowers snd is still blooming now in May As its a small plsnt I've kept it inside. 2 weeks ago i decided to give it a little tomato liquid fertilizer. The once brilliant white blooms are now turning a pale green colour. Can you tell me how i can find out which type of hydrangea I have so i can care for it correctly??? Im in the UK
@Gardeningknowhow
@Gardeningknowhow Жыл бұрын
The plant was more than likely forced to bloom early for the holiday. The flowers could just be spent and fading. The plant, however, may be a florist variety meant to be kept as a short-term houseplant especially if the plant was in full bloom too early and was sold without an identification tag. If you do plant it outdoors, it may or may not be able to over winter in the UK for you.

Unfortunately you really cannot control the height. Your best bet would be to install a very large support ring structure to the plant in early spring to help support the branches.

Rabbits can be quite destructive! At this point all you can do is provide the best nutrients for the plants to push new growth. If you haven't yet, apply some fertilizer to the shrubs to kickstart both root and leaf production.
