This video shows you how to get more blooms and improve the structure of your leucospermum plant. Using clear images and simple language, it demonstrates the best techniques to trim the plant that makes beautiful "pincushion" flowers. You will learn when in the plant's life cycle to prune and exactly where to make each cut. This is a method even beginning gardeners can master and it requires only basic gardening tools.

Thank you for this helpful video. My situation is that my neighbor's watering system overwatered my Leucospermum High Gold to the point that it got mealy bugs and the flowers literally popped off. I've removed the plant (still in its large container trying not to disturb the roots) and eradicated the insect problem. There are new buds at each "pop off" location. Should I let them grow or do I still need to prune (way early -its June in so Cal) so that the cut is no longer flat?. I have over 2+" of green below, but I'm afraid to lose these remaining buds! What's the best plan here?

So you didn't dig it up, but just moved the container? I think you're fine leaving it as is. We had a late frost one year, all the buds did the "pop off", and then that lovely plant pumped out TWO buds at every pop-off!

Should collect seeds from the dried flowerheads and grow more plants if they have been pollinated

I bought two Carnival Yellow leucospermum plants from Home Depot. I have decided to leave them in their plastic pots under the shade because we're in the 90's temps. We have natural clay soil, so I'm aware we can amend the soil. What do you recommend? Should I go ahead and plant them in the ground? Would they survive in our Las Vegas heat temps, which can get up to 110-117 degrees for several months? If so, what is the best type of soil to amend with? I read that leucospermums thrive in acidic soil, any tips for that as well. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Clay is not very good for leucospermums, it needs very well draining soil. I planted mine in a flower pot with river sand mixed in with perlite, pine mulch and succulent potting soil.

Mine are doing fine in nearly 100% clay, but we don't have nearly the heat you do. I'd be afraid of leaving them in the store pots, though, unless you are super vigilant about watering them daily. The roots can cook so easily in a nursery pot. My soil has no amendments. And remember, these guys hate fertilizer.

Hi Linda I am in South Africa. Bought the tanga protea with flowers. I took of dead flowers, i have a few new flowers coming but they look almost crippled, out of shape. Should i prune my plant?

Wait until all of the buds have flowered and faded. Do not just take off the dead flowers--prune below the dead flower at a leaf node. Maybe watch the video again for details? If you don't prune this year on a new plant, that is fine. Since it is just getting established it has a lot of growth yet to come. Have fun!

Are there more buds waiting to open? I've never seen a plant make just two blooms.... It seems to me, the best idea would be to wait until all blooms have opened and faded, then prune the plant. Good luck!

You can prune the flowers once brown if you are planning to collect seeds to grow more protea plants

I did this and my plant died after the next bloom. Better to plant it where it has enough room to grow and won't need pruning.

I'm sorry to hear your plant died. But since it bloomed, maybe something else happened?

Hello, Linda. Which season is the best time to prune leucospermum? Fall ? I live in Southern California. Thank you.

As I explain in the video, you have to look at your plant and see where it is in the bloom cycle. Right after blooming is the time to prune. Have fun!
