Rhododendrons are pruned after flowering and when new growth has elongated. Rhododendrons are pruned at latent buds situated along the branches and stem. This video shows how to do it.

Bob...You are great. Can you tell us how to cut back 10' high stringy rhododendrons?.
@davidsilver62538 ай бұрын
First, evaluate why the rhododendron is 'stringy'. Rhododendrons require partial shade, but if the shade is too deep it may be suffering. Also, rhododendrons do not like to be planted deeply. The base of the trunk should be above grade (the level of the soil). Immediately after flowering, prune the rhododendron back hard. Leave some leaves on, but you can also cut to the latent buds that do not have leaves as explained in the video. When you prune back, even if there is not a leaf when you are done, if properly cut, the latent bud should emerge. Check the pH. It should be below 6.0 (4.5-5.5). After adjusting the pH if needed and pruning, fertilize with Holly Tone which is an acid based fertilizer. If you the shrub is not flowering, wait until new growth emerges and then proceed as above. Prune this way every year and note that it will take several Seasons for your rhododendron to fill in. Thank you for the feedback.

Hey Bob, do you think you could film videos where we can actually see what's going on?
@davidsilver6253Ай бұрын
We try. Certainly it is not a professional production. Bop is my name from my grandchildren (with a 'p' not a 'b').

why?

Why what? If you are referring to the reason for pruning these rhododendrons, it is because they are in front of a window and would get too large for their location. Pruning also increases density of the rhododendrons for a more profuse bloom. In nature, allowed to grow on their own, they get up to 10 to 15 feet and more. Left unpruned, they will bloom, but not as densely as those that are managed in the landscape setting.
