In this weeks video I show you how I pull and attach handles onto my simple thrown stoneware mugs in a lot more detail. It's a process that simply needs a lot of dedicated practice, just as much as you'd need if you were learning to throw, and I hope this short video provides you with some tips and tricks.

It's definitely something that takes time, but that doesn't mean that your handles won't look good for a long time, in fact, it's quite fast to get to a point where they look good! What really takes time and practice is doing it fast. Thanks for watching!

Glad to hear that. Handles are such tricky things, it really took me a long time and countless hundred before I got really comfortable at making them. Thereafter it's just practice, practice, practice to get faster at doing them. Thanks for taking the time to watch!

Among the other things I love that you do while working, a big one is how clean and tidy you keep your working space. I think this is reflected in the clean, strong lines of the pieces you create. (Or the other way around, I'm not sure ;))

You can make a container that will keep all your chucks the right consistency by putting a few inches of pottery plaster in a sealable plastic tub. Wet the plaster to the right humidity level and it acts like a buffer that adds or removes water from anything not at that consistency. If the lid of the tub has a good seal, this setup can be remarkably stable through temperature and humidity changes in the studio. Great video! Thank you.

In lockdown, moving house and my studio in storage but I have this great video, clay and water so getting some practice in. Handles looking good but room looks like there's been a mud fight! How do you keep yours so clean? Very impressive! 😁👍

Haha! Well, practice mainly, but I also try quite hard to keep my workspace clean and tidy, I think it's a product of my being an apprentice and having so be constantly cleaning in the past. Thanks for watching Diane!

I've never tried this, I pulled two handles last night and it worked perfectly. I was skeptical of the 2nd pull once the top end was attached, but it stuck through the whole process.

The handle blanks are soft when I attach and pull them, like you'd get it fresh from the bag. If they were leather hard you'd never be able to move the clay so personally I like them to be as soft as possible. Thanks for watching!

I attach them immediately! The blanks blend the best when still soft and pull more consistently too. If you try this method and allow the blanks to dry out too much you’ll actually have a much harder time doing it.

Do you think this will work well with porcelain? I've had the most success attaching handles when both the handle and body are are similar dryness but this technique looks much faster!

It does work but you definitely need to be more careful as the forms will want to warp a lot more. My friend, and potter, Peter Montgomery, you can find him on Instagram here, instagram.com/petermontgomery/ pulls lovely porcelain handles.

I've noticed when I try to initially pull the handle it gets to wide and clunky for the actual mug. Is it because of the amount of clay I'm using at the beginning?

How long to you manage to keep those chucks? Are they kept around between mug making sessions? Do you rethrow them every time you're making mugs?

I’ve kept some for upwards of six months, if not a year! I really soak them after a while to keep them leather hard.

I like trimming mugs when they are leather hard. I find that my handles are cracking along the attachment points. Any suggestions?

They often crack if the mugs themselves are too firm at the point of attachment, or it could be that you aren’t pushing on the handle blanks firmly enough and blending in the surrounding clay sufficiently. Lastly, and perhaps most likely, you could be drying them out too fast. Once handled I wrap the mugs up tightly in plastic and even spray them with water a little bit. That way they dry slowly. If you rush the process they’ll simply crack around the joins.

why do you go through the extra step of pulling it again on the mug instead of just pulling it to the correct length and then attaching it like I've seen others do?

They're leather hard, so they can be picked up and held without the pot deforming whatsoever. I want to be able to squeeze the rim slightly without it giving it too much but it should by no means be turning bone dry yet.

I'm understanding correctly that the handle is not leather hard when attached? Just the cup is?

That's exactly right. It works, as long as once attached you dry the handled cup very slowly. I usually wrap mine in plastic and even give them a spray of water, then I leave them for a day or two undisturbed.
