Not only is it much harder to do than most people comprehend, but there’s the hours and hours of work that goes to make it even feasible to produce numbers of pieces as similar as possible. There’s the experience that makes the lips of cups comfortable to drink from, or spouts that are capable of pouring. There’s working with the glazes, which trust me, isn’t intuitive. Most glazes don’t look anything like their fired counterparts, look different depending on temperature, and can be radically different depending on a reducing or oxidising kiln burn. Then there’s paying for the power for the kiln. Be it gas, electric or even wood fired, the fuel has to be paid for. Glazes can be bought or compounded by the potter, but either way, it has to be paid for. Clay body has to come from somewhere. Even if the potter digs and purifies their own clay, it costs money to dig raw material, store it, purify it. Or you can buy it prepared, and accordingly more expensive. And finally ofc there’s actually making the pieces. A production potter brings that time down to a minimum, but it’s still an important expense, plus there’s the electrical power used to produce pieces, for light, heat and the wheel. Tbh very few handcrafters are paid what their work deserves, but settle for, hopefully, something that is livable.

Yup, this goes for a lot of creative, personalized works. It’s unique to its creator. Even ppl in the same field would end up w/ a different result since they’re working w/ their hands, their minds. Through that you can see traces of their experiences and viewpoints. It shows through their works. It’s really interesting how our personal creative process can make products that are uniquely us.

Watching the amount of skill going into these coffee cups makes me appreciate my local potters' works even more. Usually as artists, we get questioned why our works are so expensive. However, I think it's important customers and clients understand why the cost is as it is- the amount of skill, the time spent refining those skills and producing these creations, etc going into a product/piece.

Because of your great art, I joined a hand-building complementary course in the college I go to (unfortunately it's not as "hands-on" as I'd hoped for due to covid restrictions, however, I still played around with some clay at home and it was so much fun!) Amazingly informative! Best simplified explanation I've heard of what happens in a reduction atmosphere. BTW folks if you struggle w pulling handles you can do it upside down for a bit. just slap some clay down on the edge of your wedging table. Pull up. When it gets long enough it will flop over and hang. You can pull downwards at this point if more is needed. I like doing it this way cause the "flop" produces a nice organic curve, useful for ear-profile handles

Not to be rude, but I think I'm in love with your bottoms ;) Seriously though, the attention and care put into them relly makes a difference for me, they're so modern, slick and warm at the same time... Love it !

Now I know why they're so expensive. I know a lot of people don't appreciate this kind of job they need to see this video just to know. Why there are expensive.

I've worked at archaeological sites excavating ancient glazed ceramics learned about the pottery making in theory, but my first time watching the entire process. I've always wanted to learn how to throw clay ever since I tinkered around in the pottery lab during my Masters, learning to pinch and coil. It does look like a lot work but I would love to try my hand at coil and pinched pottery again. Subscribed and here to learn!

I love watching and listening to your videos. They are beautiful to watch and I love your style of narration. I think people learn best when they know the reason they are doing something and you explain your reasons and methods so well. I have just started throwing and I happened upon one of your videos and have now watched several, some a couple of times over. Thank you so much for creating this content.
