Nice tutorial if you have a free standing wall with the top not attached to anything (like a 2nd level floor), and you can make an edit jump-cut to where the drill bit is perfectly positioned.

Free standing wall with no back which allows you to verify that your bit is indeed in the center. What about when you're working blind? Do you use a camera to probe the vertical space and make sure your drill bit is centered on the top level stud?

I like the bit and this video is very helpful. This is somewhat misleading though. Fishing and drilling walls are fairly simple when you can see both sides of the wall, the ceiling framing has human clearance, and there is no insulation or plastic wrap in the way. I think it would be super awesome if you guys documented non-typical cable drops/installs in the wild. It's one thing to practice in a lab or warehouse, but if you started a series on real world onsite cabling jobs we might even see a few mistakes or bloopers and those are always a learning experience and make for fun times! Just my two cents, thanks for all the videos and hard work, I really enjoy this channel and everyone who contributes to it!

In New Zealand timber framed houses are the most common form of construction. Walls have three or four horizontal elements... top and bottom "plates", and one or two rows of "nogs" or "dwangs". Drill bits such as this are a good alternative for drilling through the dwangs, even if you have access to the top plate (and quite often if you do have attic access, you are restricted vertically by roofing etc.).

you're right, but if I was doing the job, I'd be very careful drilling from bottom. In Australia (believe same applies to NZ) there are electrical cables, gas pipes or even water pipes running across those top sections above ceiling and hitting any of those while drilling from the bottom up wouldn't be fun at all..

One thing not shown is "placing the drill bit where you want it" in the top plate. They just show the drill bit already in a hole thats been already drilled! Even with the angled placement tool it is difficult to determine where the tip of the drill bit is in relation to center of the top plate, that is done strictly by feel and guesswork. If they showed how its really done you would see the drill bit flopping from side to side as he tries to "Place the drill bit where you want" with it being off center closer to 1 side of the wall and hopefully not in the corner. Its all by feel and guesswork. Walls don't usually have clear plexiglass on one side so as to see where the tip of the bit actually is. Some other tips. Do not apply a lot of pressure when first starting to drill, let the auger tip pull the knife edges of the bit in and through. Drill at lower speeds otherwise the auger tip will lose the ability to pull the bit through and you'll have to use more pressure to push the bit through. The 4' shank of the drill bit tends to bow when you put a alot of pressure which angles the tip of the drill bit at off angles. Ohh....for this all to be easier the bit needs to have sharp clean knife edges and an undamaged auger tip. They tend to get all fucked up when they hit a nail in the wood that you obviously can't see or know about. This makes you re position the tip and start a new hole, hopefully not on the edge or near the hole you already tried to drill and not hitting that same old nail again and start a 3rd hole! Just remember "If this was easy women and children would be doing it". :)

If you can get to the top of the wall, as in the video, you can do the same thing with a short wood bit. I have 25 years of fishing wires. I would not recommend this tool. I've seen more guys drill through the outside of a wall, right into the carpet or through the siding using these things. That guide tool is ridiculous. You have know idea where the bit head is when using that thing. And lets not forget the insulation once it starts wrapping around the bit. In the wrong hands, I've seen it bend bits so bad that it blows out the drywall or the bit gets stuck in the wall.

So what happens if you have to drill through the top plate on a fire rated wall? How do you seal the penetration? You can't, I see how beneficial this is on non rated walls. But if you doing this on a rated wall, you have effectively comprised the rating for that system. If you plan on using this great product, please be sure of where you can actually use it. And if it's on a rated wall your easiest option is cutting a hole toward the top of the wall, fishing your wire then fire caulking your penetration.

You'll get a shock. I think if your drilling on external walls youve got no worries, if internal just have a quick check in attic around about where your coming up if no cable your fine. Downstairs just avoid drilling say less than 200mm either side of a socket (as cables run up into floor across to consumer unit/fusebox) generally just by looking at where your sockets and light fittings and then consumer unit you should be able to guess where cables will be running. From Mr.DIY.
@HBSuccess
@HBSuccess 7 жыл бұрын
Visual inspection is best. If you're going into the attic you'll need to go there anyway to connect the cable to your bit or fish tape. We always look for wires/pipes etc. If you're really drilling blind there are all kinds of sensing gizmos available - stud sensors with added features - that will sense a metal pipe or copper wire. There are also "ringers" you can attach to your panel that will put a frequency on the circuit you can pick up with a hand-held sensor. So you should be able to avoid starting a fire, flood, or electrocuting yourself ;-)

Johnny .Bravo There are generally guidelines/codes mitigating how much material can be removed across the width of a framing member, also how near to an edge a hole may be; if for example a wall's top plate were a 2x6 rather than a 2x4 there would be more room to drill while still leaving enough material to maintain integrity. That being said, larger sizes, at least to choose from, would be excellent perhaps they have some...

That thing actually is a 3/4" bit - and they make them up to 1-1/4". I own several of them. But every hole in the building envelope through a wall plate into an unconditioned attic or crawl - that goes unplugged by some kind of caulk or fireblocking is a problem. It's a path for rodents... it's an air leak from conditioned space into unconditioned space... it's always a bad thing. So you don't want to drill more or larger than you need.

not really conviced on this,1- your in the roof anyway to tie cable on so just drill through the top plate, 2- if your wall has no insulation like this demo thats a sparkys dream just drop cable down wall after drilling hole in top plate, 3- how can you be certain you in the middle of the top plate even with that hook thingy you could still end up drillin through to next room, 4- if you do have insulation that drill bit is now part of the house because it wont be coming out. Cant beat straight extension bits for a centre noggen and the good old tounge from flooring board (yellow tounge).

video after video but none actually are in the real world. I simply want to fish a wire from light switch to ceiling and its not easy. The ceiling is the 2nd floor and I can't drill through the floor there. i've got a hole already for the original cable but the fastidious electrician stapled it to the 2x4. so I can't pull it and even using a camera too hard to thread something new into the old hole. In the ceiling the electrical cable is 3ft away from my ceiling hole, so just grabbing it in the ceiling doesn't work. If I could reach it, to cut it, still doesn't help as I can't pull it due to staples. I have a joist to get through to the wall from my ceiling access, so difficult to use fish tape or others to snake to the wall and down. anyway, it's "easy" when you have a frame built in your shop with sheet rock attached.

That was not a good tutorial - you placed the drill bit in the proper position from the open side of the wall, got is started then started the camera. In a real wall you can't do that. You need to show actually how you used the tool to place the drill bit in the center of the top plate without going through the drywall - if you were able to... that's the problem with these tools.
