Let’s be honest, as framers or really anyone in the trades, pulling nails and “deconstruction” are part of the job. It is just a simple fact that we will make mistakes, or changes will be made after the fact. In this post I wanted to introduce you to the way we pull nails and the tools we use.
When I started framing after school and on breaks, it was often my job to pull nails or fix things. I hated it but now realize that this was good training. It is very important that as apprentices we learn to use tools proficiently, and that only comes from repetition. The cat’s paw I first used was the old style here. It worked well enough, but I can distinctly remember nailing rim on a cantilever too low. It wasn’t flush with the joists, and I had to pull all the nails. I missed the handle on the cat’s paw and hit my knee with my hammer. This was a 2’ cantilever on second floor, I was new and scared being on top of the walls. I hated my job and hated life at that moment!

I just put in a bunch of nails *to make it really secure* only to realize I had done it incorrectly... I got really frustrated with myself, but hearing you explain that even pros make these mistakes has heartened me. Thanks!

That side nail puller on the Martinez hammer is 100% enough reason to buy it. I helped a crew last week strip some footing forms and boy was it nice! Thanks for showing your methods.

Awesome explanation. This is exactly what I need. i just framed a wall with a door but I need to make the doorway wider and I thought I was gonna have to cut the nails with a thin saw. This helps a bunch.

My old Plumb 13 curved claw doesn’t need a side puller. Also you can choke up on the handle without being forced to grip a skinny metal shank. The nasty old cats paws they had when I started out have disappeared from the market. Many makers are now making the excellent Japanese style pullers you demonstrate.

Love it! That’s exactly how I use it too. I have a nice little 8” one that fits nice in my pouch and works great still bc of the way I hit it with the hammer shaft like you do

Task nail pullers are a favorite where I am in NS, Canada. Similar profile to the Deluge too. Lots of extra material if you want to sharpen it back up.

I’ve pulled thousands of nails out of wood from framed houses, and pallet wood. Just as a helpful tip, using a crowbar is even better and easier to pull the nail out. And when you have an endless amount of nails to pull, an even better way would be to use a pneumatic nail remover that uses compressed air and a little hammer to push the nails out for you.

I have the same nail bar too. Have you ever tried using the other little claw end first to get under the nail and then (this only works with Martinez or tb3) using the little hole slot in the hammer handle put the other end of the nail bar through said hole then pry up with hammer thereby creating a longer lever? I find it useful if you're at at an awkward angle. Be the same as putting a pipe on a ratchet wrench to achieve more torque. I really appreciate your videos, thanks!

You missed the part where the inside of the V isn't too steep, otherwise they buckle the nail heads and require driving farther into the wood to work in the first place. Task and Estwing ones are good too, for framing nails I like the oversized 14" Estwing beast. Incidentally the Estwings say Made in Japan so I suspect they're possibly made by Task anyways...

Do u have a vid for the average user trying your technique? ie: and with an average store bought hammer and demonstrate the same but on an actual wall frame stud? My results aren’t the same as yours. I ended up just cutting it shallow and hammering back into the wood because it was easier.
