How to Pump a Tire with Presta & Schrader Tubes

The Presta and Schrader Valves. These two tubes are the most common in North America.

Most pumps out there will be able to pump a Presta or Schrader Valve. Unless it's like a pump from 1990.
Presta Tubes use a metal stem which makes it stronger, and are great for high pressured tires.
Schrader Tubes are the most commonly used. (Note: If you find your stem goes into an angle, you are not using enough air pressure. Check tire for the minimum amount that should be pumped)
There are two other stems that you may see. Dunlop AV(Metal sized Schrader) and another also known as Woods Valve. You can use the Presta Adaptor to pump that one up.
Reminder: Always keep the minimum amount required by the tire, or else you could get a flat, and possibly damage your rim.
When pumping at a gas station, their output pressure is high. You will only need a shot or two to get required pressure. DO NOT hold in place, or else BOOM!

Why the hassle? My mountain bike tube was like a car tire, Schrader, but when I replaced the tube, I got the Presta. Now I need an adapter. Why ? Thanks

Agree with some of the other comments, that I watched several videos on how to inflate a tube with a presta valve and you were the only one who explained the pump adapter. Incidentally, my pump doesn't convert to presta, but my tires came with adapters, but i wasn't aware I had to remove them, unscrew the presta, replace the adapter and pump. Thanks for explaining this.

Here because the instructions (for switching from Presta to Schrader) that came with my new pump were abysmal. Haven't had a bike for 12 years, and even back then I was hardly riding, so forgotten about the different types of valves. You made this very easy; thank you!

got a new bike tube with Presta valve, spent two plus hours trying to pump with my new Topeak Peakini pump. Just about ready to go back to the shop and I find this "Jackpot" of a video. The pump was set for Shrader and I was clueless until Now! Picture instructions were micro small on box. You saved me arse and I now can ride again.

My problem is that the air escapes before I can tighten down the Presta valve. Any thoughts?

hmmm. Could be something wrong with stem, but it could be a different system, which I never explained in this video. It could be the one way valve. I'm not certain, as I need to see a picture to verify. You could send a picture to bikes@sportsshack.ca and I can see from there. But if it is a european style tube, you could use a nozzle to blow air into the stem. Hope that helps. Thanks

@@SportsShackEDM Thank you for your reply. I am grateful. I realized after considering your video that maybe the trouble was what I was doing. I found that I would press down the valve and then tighten the valve. That is why the air was escaping. I should have just tightened the valve. I did and all was well. I guess I thought that one had to do both to get the valve tightened. I was wrong and happy to learn that!

Good video will the PSI be accurate with the adapter I have a presta valve tube the tire says 65PSI but when I put the adapter on I am getting 15PSI and the tire seems like it's getting hard I'm afraid to overfill it and blow the tube

I tried to pump air into the Schrader valve with my bike pump but the air does NOT go in. How come??? I also saw some green slime oozing out of the valve and maybe it is clogging the valve from getting air in the tube??

Some tubes are funny. May have to fiddle(angle) the nozzle to get air in, but you may have to replace tube. The ooze is to clog small holes in your tube to prevent it from going flat. It should still be able to get air in with it.

Both tires are completely empty after a long period of non-use. The Presta valve moves a lot because of this. The pump head will not stay on the valve. Every time I try to pump, the head blows right off. Any ideas on what to do? Thanks.

Hello sir, it seems from your video that you say its ok to pump your tire with the car pump at the gas station. is this safe? i have a psi gauge that i use for my car, was wondering if i could just pump carefully with the pump at gas station and just measure psi with the gauge. was thinking it still might be risky and might blow out the tire. please lmk if you have experience with this. thank you

Yeah for sure most gas stations is will be ok. Just make sure you do short bursts regardless. Average tire is 40-65 psi, so if you have a gauge that'll help for sure.

When using the presta to shrader adapter, should the pump engage the valve pin before you inflate, and hear a release of air when locking the pump head?

Depends on pump, but it's normal to hear some release of air. Sometimes the adaptors can be funky, and you may have to adjust the adaptor either more or less tight. Make sure the pin is unscrewed all the way to make best connection.

I have a screw-on tube for my Schrader valve. Whenever I remove it, half the air escapes. How can I prevent this?

If you have the tube I think you have. Think of it more as a one way valve. Works the same for a schrader valve. You can force air in, but air won’t come out. If you have an air compressor with air nozzle it is the easiest way. Put the nozzle over top and just force the air in. @@SportsShackEDM Here's a shaky video of what I experienced: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apejas9ysOCxiZs.html I also tried only-just attaching the pump hose to the valve, but no air got through at all there. Video demonstrates me attaching the hose, which mostly deflates the tyre, then reinflating it, then removing the hose, which lets half the air out again. I suspect this could be solved by purchasing a push-fit hose, but with all the good bike shops either forced to close or sold out in the UK, that's not going to happen anytime soon. I'm going to have to borrow a pump instead.

I see. Well, I’ve never used a piece like that personally, but I know the air shouldn’t escape too much, but, apparently it does, no matter how fast you unscrew it. Have you tried half way on the threads? Basically enough where it presses the pin slightly so air doesn’t escape as quick, then you can unscrew it quicker. Sometimes tightening it all the way doesn’t work. Besides a newer pump, the only option I can think of is to bring bike to a gas station, or like you said, if a neighbour has a pump you can borrow. Thanks for the video, went to pump up a new inner tube and found this Presta valve, now I got to go buy more stuff because my 4 hand pumps are all the old type that only support the Schrader valve. If a Presta Valve is so dominant everywhere how did Presta get a hold on the market and why doesn't my inner tube come with a converter since it's standard. Now got 2 bikes with 3 Schrader valves and 1 Presta.
