never suffered a flat on road with this trick. plenty of dried sealant typically between tire and tube though when I swap tires, indicating that there have been many punctures that I have not even noticed. also a great tip for reducing the amount of pressure you lose over time; now I need to top up my commuter pressures only once per month at most.

Works great for me! I've had four front wheel flats back to back (inner tape was fine, rim wasn't bent, tire brand new) and a bike shop mechanic talked me into trying out the sealant and now it's been about two months without a flat!

Spinning wouldn't happen when you're riding after you remove the nail because you have to stop to remove it, so I suggest remove it and spin as fast as possible.

If you bought a new tyre, hang it first to dry out because new tyres are still wet and soft. Drying it out will harden it and will be less punctures. Also coiling an extra inner tuber or using liners will help prevent punctures

Wouldn't this end up sealing the valve itself too, such that you can no longer top up your tyre pressure?
@lazurm
@lazurm 2 жыл бұрын
There is an increased chance to seal the valve. In most cases it's a weak seal that is easily handled by the pressure of a pump refilling the tire and especially handled when refilling the valve with sealant. But, in any event, one can purchase valve cores on the cheap (I got 25 of them for $10 from Amazon) and either clean the old one or replace it when you want. Either way, it's all worth the reduction in flats, especially in cold or rainy weather.

I use conti gp4000 2 and cut-off valves on fulcrum r5 alloy rim. With the help of 2 rolls of electrical tapes and sealant, I manage to get them sealed after a 10km shakedown ride. Apparently, the feel is a lot muted on 120psi and very comfort (totally depends on how soft the tyre wall is) and the road noise sounds cool as well

You can also add things like glitter, fine chopped nylon, or corn starch to improve (?) sealing properties (good homebrew sealant). There are also tyre lining tapes that weigh 24g which is about as much sealant as you put in.

That was brilliant. Just would have liked to see you riding on the puncture sealed tire and whether once the sealant had cauterized the hole would it keep reopening the wound from the constant flexing of riding on it. Tricky to do on a presta valve although I guess possible if you had actually removed the tube from the tire. You'd have to manipulate the valve back into position from the inside once you'd added the sealant.

I have 2 29"tires that I tried multipull times to seal with a Stans No Tube kit several years ago.It did not work and I was left with two damaged tire beads.I had some sealant left and tried an experiment.I added the sealant directly into the tire with the tubes in place.After much leaks around the damaged beads on both tires I have found that the tires have had very little pressure loss after they sealed.It's been the better part of a year since I last aired them up and they are ready to roll.These are spare tires left after my bike was stolen so they do not get used.The new bike has good tires so no need to change.

I use the green slime, probably very similar stuff, It works for 99% of punctures, I big staple in the tyre ( 2 holes quite big ) rusty too, rode home without noticing lol, pulled it out at home as I noticed hissing and tyre went down faster, I pumped it up again and spun the wheel and it fixed it, I've been on loads of rides since with no problems. Got a flat in a tyre today with a tiny thorn, that tyre did not have slime in but had supposedly armoured puncture proof tyres on already so I hadn't bothered with slime..

Great idea but Stan's, Slime etc. have a short life and can clog up your valve. I've used Ultraseal with 100% success on motorbikes and cycles but there's also OKO and Puncturesafe and they all last the life of the tyre, can be washed out of tubeless tires with water and are used in plant, military, delivery and emergency vehicles around the world (and on the lunar rover if you believe their claims!).

read the contents of the sealant carefuly most of them are either too thin or too thick or are unstable in terms of clump forming. and the results are unpredictable. when we have had tubeless technology all sorted out, there may not be any need for this. on the other hand talking of bicycle racing tyres, there is probably always going to be the compromise of contradicting demands. the new development of graphene intelligent tyres proves that you cannot have it all. the puncture protection is a great challenge and will continue to be so from my personal experience, it is not worth experimenting esp if you like using latex tyres, some of the chemical reactions may be unpredictable and the use of liquid sealants best applied as an emergency rather than preventative measure.

Every time I have used a sealant like Slime or Fix-a-Flat in my tires, I've ended up with no flats for a good time, but that crap starts to gum up the valve core and valve seat so I had to replace the tubes because of slow leaks at the valve requiring me to top up the air every other day.
@1krazyking

I thought you would use the sealant after you notice the air hissing. How many times have you applied it to where it starts to mess up the tube
@xray7908
@xray7908 3 жыл бұрын
@@1krazyking The Slime brand sealant is actually designed to prevent flats as well as to repair them. I used to use it to prevent flats. I would apply it once. After maybe 2 or 3 years it would begin to gum up my valves so that the valve would develop a slow leak. I tried cleaning the valve but to no success. I have since stopped using Slime. I ride maybe 3000 miles per year on either fairly clean pavement or gravel, generally on 1.75 to 2.25 tires. The only flats I was getting were from the Slime gumming up the valves - but maybe the Slime was saving me from puncture flats. I don't think so, because I never found any Slime on the outside of the tubes when I changed them. Still - if a person rides in a puncture prone environment, the Slime may be worth the trouble. If you're getting a flat more than once every other year, then the Slime may save you some trouble.

Where I live, flats are common enough that if you even get a few months out of a tube (ie with sealant or with a heavy duty tire), it's a good deal. Replacing a tube every few months is no big deal for me. It's the replacing a tube every week or every other ride that is the problem. Plus, if you run Schrader valves, it's easy to replace the gummed up valve core.

most sealant (stanz) will actually evaporate after continuous use in roughly 6 months depending on where you ride. Therefore it is a good idea to replace or refill the tubes with sealant so it doesn't get all crusty or run out.

The Slime goes dry within a year, so I'm wondering how long this lasts? I bought some at £3.80 per bottle, so even if it lasts 6 months that's worth it, or even 3 months. I always used punture proof tyres because I get a lot of puntures in my area, sometimes several times a day. But they say they are heavy and slow with no fun factor, and also have poor grip because they are tougher and less flexible. It will be interesting to try this with regular tyres.
@johntechwriter
@johntechwriter 8 жыл бұрын
You're not "puncture proofing" your tires -- you're filling the punctures with glue. Which means your tires could be full of holes and you'd be none the wiser. For this and many other reasons that readily come to mind (and are stated elsewhere here), the glue-in-your-tubes approach is a BAD idea. One alternative: a puncture-resistant performance tire like Continental's Attack and Force models. Or if you are really paranoid about flats, their Grand Prix 4000. On the other hand, if you insist on riding "competition-weight" clinchers like Michelin Power, you are going to get a LOT of flats.

Great Video! I've tried Stan's, Vittoria, Giant - 2oz bottles into the tube. I tested by pushing thumb tacks into the tire. Either it just doesn''t seal at all or it loses most of the air (I run 60 psi in 35mm CX tires) before sealing. When I pump it back to 60 psi - it starts to leak again. It seems to be more reliable in low pressure applications such as MTB tires or in full tubeless road tires. But take a look at races like Dirty Kanza - expensive tubeless systems being run by many pro cyclists - punctures galore! I would love it to work but it seems unreliable at best. I use 28mm folding tire with sidewalls cut off - inserted into my 35 mm tires as puncture breaker. They weigh about 150 grams per strip (the 28mm insert). So far, only a pinch flat as I ran the pressure too low at 50 psi. You can always carry a 2oz bottle of sealant in your back pocket - for emerg situation - and give it a try instead fiipping your bike over and getting out your tools.

But sealant doesn't work on road tires at 10,000 feet. I know because I raced Pikes Peak in 2018, not knowing I had a sealed puncture in my race wheel 'till I was at the start line--I saw the shiny spot where the sealant had plugged a hole. 200 feet into the race, the hole opened up. The air pressure different opened the hole and I was fortunate enough to convince the organizers to give me a restart. They'd repeatedly said this was a mass start time trial, so since I was only a few hundred feet down the road, they allowed me to swap wheels and restart.

Schraders are easy - get a schrader valve core remover. It simply unscrews the core (lefty loosy, then you just pull it out). Then you put in your sealant, and then righty-tighty screw the valve core back in. Sometimes sealant messes up your valve core (usually takes awhile). It's good to have a few spare cores around (from previously flatted tubes).
