Baby powder can be helpful to slide on/off, if your hospital allows it. (Some have banned its use.) Yes, adding an extra pad underneath can be definitely be helpful! This can prevent having to clean up the entire bed post if there is a spills, especially since some patients follow commands better than others. If you're worried about sudden movements, this can be a great call. But in you're in a pinch for time, I wouldn't delay to grab a pad if the patient can barely hold it. (We only had access to a regular bed pan at that sim lab which is why we just used a regular bed pan.) More info on fracture vs. regular pans below: A regular bed pan is a larger, more rounded pan used for normal bowel movements. It is designed to fit under a patient while lying down in bed or sitting up. The rounded shape of the regular bed pan is intended to provide comfort and support for the user. A fracture pan, on the other hand, is a smaller, more flat-shaped pan designed for patients who have a hip or pelvic fracture, or other lower extremity injuries. The flat shape of the fracture pan is intended to help patients with limited mobility to more easily slide the pan underneath them, without requiring them to lift their legs too high. This can help reduce pain and discomfort during the process of using the bedpan.
