I did buy this frame. Quilting can be done but it is a job. Really takes the joy out of quilting. You are just glad its over. The maneuvering of the quilt is not what I had ever imagined. Baby quilts are a breeze. Quilts that are larger are very difficult. I have been quilting for 51 years so I am not a newbie. Maybe you will have better luck than me.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Quilting a big quilt is challenging whether you're quilting in zones on a Hoop Frame or spreading it out on a table and navigating the bulk through the arm of the machine. And while you're not a new quilter, that was your first quilt on a Hoop Frame, so it's going to feel like a totally new experience. Give yourself more time to experiment and learn the process and you may find it more enjoyable.

I bought this frame at the Quilt festival in Birmingham a couple of years ago as it was so compact. It was the entry drug. After using a variety of machines on it I got frustrated that the harp space was too small on the machine to use the whole frame space. That lead to the eventual purchase of my Bernia Q20 ( which I got ex demo) on it with great effect and can now use the whole available frame space. You can now buy a Q16 from Bernia which is new and probably cheaper but be warned - this frame answers so many problems for the quilter who wants the convenience of size ,flexibility it makes the whole quilting process even more addictive-as if that were possible...
@LeahDay

LOL! I completely agree with you that this is a entry drug! I think that's the case for any frame - to want to go bigger and have as much space to play as possible. Thank you for sharing your experience Jessica.

Thankyou so much for this video. I have a Janome 1600P on a Grace Pinnacle frame. I bought this second hand. I have the sure stitch regulator however I was having trouble with tension. I was told that everytime I change the type of thread or fill the bobbin I have to check the bobbin tension using the yoyo test that I have seen you do. I am confused as to now know what to do. I seem to have the tension correct and even though I check the tension each time I fill the bobbin I don't seem to need to change the tension. Also I have bought Isocord thread now and that seems to work well also. Thank you so much for your videos they are great.

I don't typically check my bobbin tension with each bobbin change. I check and set it once with the thread I'm using and then I don't have to adjust it again. If there are tension adjustments needed, I change the top tension dial.

@LeahDay
@LeahDay 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have had many quilters with this machine on this frame. The only issue with Pfaff Expressions is they have a lot of settings for the foot height and you'll need to fiddle with that a bit until you find the perfect placement. That's the case for quilting on a frame or with the machine in a table - I learned those Pfaffs can be tricky several years ago.

I’m not sure if I missed it in the video or not. What stitch length do you use when using the frame? Do you set it at zero like free motion and did you put the feed dogs down? Also I have the same machine except DB so no thread cutter. At the end I have issues with getting the bobbin thread up to bury the threads. What’s the easiest way? Thank you for the great video.
@LeahDay
@LeahDay Жыл бұрын
You can use the same settings you use for free motion quilting. So for me that is stitch length 0, but no, I don't drop my feed dogs. It's up to you - if you drop your feed dogs for free motion quilting on your machine try it and see if that works well. You'll need to experiment with settings until you find the best method. As for pulling up thread, try taking one single stitch using the Needle up / Down button so you have a clean complete stitch. Then it should be easier to pull up your thread tail.

Probably not. The main reason for needle breaks is pulling the machine around and not giving it gas (getting the needle to move). Try moving the carriage a LOT more slowly. Much slower than you think and run the machine at a slightly faster than you think speed.

Thank you, Leah. I am looking at the Cutie frame. Do you find that using a frame, as opposed to sitting at a midarm, is easier on the neck and shoulders? Then I would also have to get a ruler work table for my machine.
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do find this is much much easier on my back and neck. I would advise setting your frame up so you can stand and quilt and have it quite high so you don't tend to crane your neck over at an awkward angle. You will need to use a machine compatible with a stitch regulator in order to do this, but it definitely makes things much much easier!

What is best the Qzone hoop frame or the Grace Cutie frame?
@LeahDay
@LeahDay Жыл бұрын
Actually it's the Continuum II Frame! If you want the greatest longevity and a frame that will grow with you as your needs change, go with the Continuum. If it's a choice between the Q-Zone and Cutie, go with the Q-Zone. Just keep in mind that the way these hoop frames are designed, you will end up spending more time with every advance. More time fiddling with the quilt means less time quilting - something most quilters find frustrating!

I just got my new grace qzone queen frame, and after assembly discovered that I have to either purchase or make the leader cloth! The leader cloth kit from the Grace Company is a bit pricey ($190) for my queen qzone, so Im thinking about buying muslin and making my own. Do you have any experience with making the leader cloth(s)? Is there a distinct advantage to buying the kit from Grace that makes it worth the extra cost?
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, this is part of the reason I don't carry that frame - because there are a lot of hidden costs that can sneak up on you. I think it's worth it to purchase the leader cloth. It's made of thick, durable material, it comes with velcro to attach it to your frame, and I've been using mine for years and never had a problem with it. We do offer this leader cloth here (it says Continuum Frame, but it's the same leader cloth for your Q-Zone Queen) - leahday.com/products/continuum-frame-leader-cloth

32 inches wide would be perfect if you wanted a little space on the edges to test your stitching.

Leah can you do rulerwork with this setup? With a longarm you need a plate under the bed of the quilt to give a hard surface for the rulers to rest. Do you need something similar with the Q hoop system.

Yep! You can do ruler quilting on the hoop frame. I've played with this on this machine and I found the machine was wide enough and bulky enough to support the rulers. If your machine was really skinning and narrow around the needle, you may need to purchase an additional ruler plate or extension bed and that might be tricky. I tried out the only one available for this kind of thing and was not impressed. So my advice would be to try rulers and see if you have enough support with your machine. If you don't, if the machine just doesn't have enough space to support the ruler, that is just not something you can use while your machine is on the frame.

So so disappointed. I had my heart set on this machine and can’t find it anywhere. You had my husband convinced too. 😢

We have 12 on order that will hopefully be shipping to us by the end of October. If you go to - leahday.com/1600 - click on the orange button "want to know when this is back in stock?" You will be emailed as soon as we get the machines back in stock. Almost all home sewing machines are out of stock right now. Between the virus lockdowns and mask making, everyone is getting into sewing. So just understand that it's a challenging time to get your hands on any machine and all dealers are trying to do our best.

Do you think you could reverse the roll so that it is in the front and thereby avoid losing any quilting space? I find you to be the most interesting textile artist on the internet. What I mean is that I find myself wondering about your life, educational history, beliefs etc as I watch you. You are obviously intelligent and thoughtful and I value learning life lessons or perspectives I have not considered. You share a great deal but if you have not considered doing a series about yourself and inspirations then I would like to request that. You look very young but I’m guessing you are over thirty based on info in some of your videos... like 34? You have a HUGE bright energy that is disguised by your size and soft voice...and I can’t stop thinking of you as a Viking Seer but that could just be my constant viewing of The Last Kingdom on Netflix. Lol I am a Christian but I also value GODDESS energy and you have it off the charts.

Thank you for your kindness Mary. Yes, you can start in the middle of your quilt and stitch the upper half, then rotate and stitch the lower half. It's on my list to try this myself. I have shared a podcast that's more personal, but have slowed it down considerably because I'm now tackling my addiction to work. I've also become a Christian and will be creating a new series of quilts focusing on God's mighty power and love. I did write a book on my Goddess quilts which is a bit of an autobiography - leahday.com/products/leah-days-goddess-quilts-print-edition I've moved from this series now, but still respect where I was over those years. Enjoy!

Yep! I'm actually planning to play with that machine on this frame too. The more space in the harp, the more space you will have for quilting!
