About two years ago I started using a pop up tent as a way of sleeping on my Mirror dinghy on overnight trips. Some people have asked me how this is done, so I made this video to show you the way my tent is set up. Enjoy, and adapt the ideas to suit your boat.

Thanks Brian. It has been a frustrating year because I have not been able to get to France, otherwise I would have done the Arcachon trip my Mirror, and the forthcoming Vela Raid on Avel Dro. But the combination of Covid and not being in the EU any longer has meant I have had to cancel both trips.

Ingenious Mary Dooley - what a great idea! Excellent warning about the potential for entanglement in a capsize as seems an important safety issue for any sleep-on boat. Typically we would have some warning although a sudden capsize while sleeping would prove treacherous in a confused state. Maybe having the life vest inside the tent perhaps attached to the tent opening? Even sleeping GI Joe/Jane style with a suitable knife strapped to ones arm or leg could address a range similar scenarios? Have enjoyed your cameos on Roger's channel so excited to now discover you have your own!

Such a very nice set up. Love ❤️ it. Very well done girl. Thanks for sharing 👍. I have still not found a decant way to get a tent installed on my Hobbie Tandem Island. Even so with my outriggers, nothing really worked right. Your wood "floor" idea is pretty sweet. I will try to do "kinda" the same concept. Seems very promising (even so, my boat is just a piece of floating plastic"). I am not worried about capsizing due the "wing span". Just struggling with "keeping it simple" but also very effective. Happy to see you someday around. Always fair winds and safe travels. Greetings from Spain 🇪🇸

This is amazing. I'm looking into getting a dinghy I can camp in, and this is a great setup! Good thinking about having the inner door left open. I never thought about what would happen if the boat capsized while you were asleep. It's a scary thought. I'd probably do something like bring a rope from outside so I could follow it through the openings.

Good point about being trapped in case of a capsize. I think I'd keep a knife close at hand, maybe in a leg sheath like scuba divers use ... or just camp in places where the water's so shallow, capsize is impossible.

Would it not be easier and more spacious to just use a tarp set up with the boat's boom acting as the centre of the "tent". Pre-made tie out points to suit and you could really maximise the space on the dinghy. The pop up tent idea seems a little cumbersome to me. Whatever works for you though, as long as you're having fun, that's what it's all about. Cheers for a cool wee video

I thought your trip in France was good and your comments on Roger's puffing whilst rowing and falling bridge debris made me smile. Thank you for an enjoyable video. I have one or two questions. I notice that when you moved the mast forward, you did not move the shrouds to the forward shroud plates. This explains the tackle arrangement on the forestay. Am I right in thinking that this tackle stays rigged permanently when you are sailing, and that the tensioning line is the one that returns to the cockpit and is secured at the vertical cleat between the open lockers just below the mast foot? Also, did you consider making bed boards to fit between the side decks rather than resting on them - lighter and smaller - and if so, what made you decide against it? I'm in the process of adapting a Mirror for cruising (with the DCA) right now, and a pop-up tent, which I have, is one of the 'accommodation' options I am looking at.
@mirrormary8398
@mirrormary8398 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Malcolm , I didn't move the shrouds forward because the forward position is just a temporary arrangement to give me a bit more sleeping space, in the morning i move it back. If i were to sail with the mast in the foreward position I also move the shrouds. The forestay is tensioned with a cleat on the foredeck. Once i pull the bed boards foreward they do just cover the well between the side decks. To get a full sleeping platform that the tent can rest on, I think they are as small as they could be. But do let me know if you have a better way, I would be interested to see it.
@malcolmmcdonald9991
@malcolmmcdonald9991 2 жыл бұрын
@@mirrormary8398 Thanks for your reply, Mary. I saw a YT vid where somebody had used an old military stretcher stretched out over the cockpit as a bed, and on the strength of that I rigged up a kind of hybrid arrangement - transverse boards laid on two long bearers running fore and aft. It works OK but it is very heavy and takes up a lot of space when stowed. It doesn't look too bad but a boat the size of a Mirror soon turns into a bit of a junkyard when loaded up with cruising gear. I'm now wondering about 2 trampoline-type fabric panels tensioned over the cockpit which can be packed away into a much smaller space - or just getting a bigger boat!
