Cheers bud, this was super helpful! Just to note, for those with the older Virgin Hub 3.0, once in modem mode you need to plug your replacement router ethernet cable into port 3 not 4. Also, once the hub 3.0 is properly set up you will see a red light at the bottom, this is normal.

thank for the video. it is helpful. as you said, i switched my hub3 to modem mode couple days ago and today i received an email from VM that my device was identified as having a ntpmode6 vulnerability. if the hub3 is in modem mode you will lose some protection like the firewall from the hub and all the network traffic will go directly to your personal mesh or wifi router since i do not have much knowledge in configuring the firewall (default) in my mesh i think the quickest solution for me is to enable the hub3 back to the router mode first and turn off the wifi.

What if I want to use two of my own routers? One for upstairs, and one for downstairs?

Wonderful job making this video. I was looking for the very same info as I am planning to get a mesh system for my house. pls, correct me if I am wrong, this is how the mesh setup will work. First, turn my VM Hub 5 to Modem mode, then via Ethernet cable 2.5g connect it to my mash router. Complete the setup and then connect the other 2 satellites to the Mesh router. then, connect all my Wi-Fi devices to the Mesh system using the Mesh wifi name and password? AND, I am getting DECO XE200, I can see there are 3 ports, Gigabit x 2 and 10gbps x 1. So the VM router ethernet from port 4 goes to a 10Gbps port or any port?

Thank you, just got the 5x hub and 1GB virgin and it has no parental controls what so ever. I did put my older router into extender mode but the parental control's vanished. So ordered a new wifi 6 router which has great parental controls and will use that through the hub in modem mode. My old router can then go downstairs as range extender. Virgin really need to have parental controls up to the standards of TP Link on the HUB and I am in shock they are none in this day and age.

When changing to modem mode, will I only be able to access the page on the pc directly connected to the hub 5, or can I use any pc in the house ?

Virgin media is blocking vpn sites, over 18 sites etc on my new hub 5. I've got websafe turned off. Do you have any ideas what I could do? I'm considering a new router so I can change the dns servers.

I'm with Virgin also and I have an ASUS 86U Pro router. Currently, I've taken your advice and put my VM Hub into modem mode. Is it possible though to use the 86U as a modem/router or does it not have this capability? TIA

Done everything in this video. When I use the Virgin 5 I get 250mb…. When I connect my own I only get 120mb. The router is same as yours. Any ideas?

It has four phones around house & & a central station with an answer phone; this blinks if I leave a message🎉 is there anyway of linking an incoming call on her mobile too the existing house phone network; without having to pay for VOIP….maybe a texting bell with flashing display to ask her to pick -up or phone me? ……what say you?

10 days ago, I watched this video, and I like it, it seems very good info, and I asked a question too. Anyhow, I followed 100% but I failed to set up my Mesh Deco in Access Point Mode. After checking with VM support, and TP-Link Support and TP-Link Community, everyone suggested, Don't change the VM Hub to Modem mode and in this case, I will not be able to set up my Deco in Access Point Mode. All three support suggested keeping VM Hub in Router Mode, but simply turn off both channels of Wifi and in this way, I can set up Deco Mesh in Access Point Mode and also there will be no 2 networks running which can disturb the frequency as wifi from VM hub been disabled. So, seems your instructions are inaccurate, Or unless you are correct as you are using another router between VM Hum and Mesh system.

bro i have had VM for 5 years with no problems but not with hub 5 my p2p gaming is awful big packet loss and bufferbloating, i don't know how to fix it, ive tried everything expect getting my own router do you think that will fix it?

Hub 5 Wi-Fi is excellent in my experience. No need to put it into modem mode in my view. Hub 3 on the other hand, a load of rubbish.

There is no Modem Mode in Hub 5

Hi dad, so I used to be with BT. Thieving bastards. But anyway. I ran my main hub as the master. I then manipulated the other old hubs to be repeaters. They got full speed, full range .. everywhere in the house. No children crying cause us daddy's are so awesome. So, the reason I am here. I noticed since switching to virgin the speed is twice is fast but the upload is half as slow. Traffic shaping at its best. I'm annoyed with the ping. I can't get it below 30ms. So I done a test where I used a freshly set up secondary router .. BT hub 3. And it connects and works perfectly. The only problem is the hub 3 rather than the 260ish Mbps it's only getting 40mbos but full upload. There doesn't appear to be an option on the hub 3 to alter the MTU so even though this was never an issue with BT to BT hubs. I just realised when you mentioned port 4, I'm sure I was trying that but I'll double check. I'll give that a try here. But what I'm worried about. If I leave the DHCP on, it'll try to log on via BT username/password? Did you not need your virgin username and password to use the external router?
