This is the first fighting game tutorial that I've watched that actually taught me the relationship between pokes, mixups, combos, and oki in a structured and succinct way that I could understand. I feel like I have the tools now to carve my own destiny when playing fighting games instead of simply following a character guide without really knowing what I'm doing. This probably sounds like I'm gushing but this video has reinvigorated my interest in fighting games. Great stuff.

WHERE HAS THIS VIDEO BEEN MY WHOLE LIFE!!! I have gone through fighting game tutorials and could learn some moves but I couldn't figure out a strategy and would just and pull off cool moves and hope I win. The part where you talk about trying to get your opponent into oki is pretty much what I needed to hear.

I'm coming over from platform fighters to SF6 as my first fighting game. I'm glad you have this video, especially the combo advice. I think it's really easy to get caught up with combos and it's really easy to forget that game understanding is more important than being able to get a million damage from one hit.

This really helped! I never really understood what to do in neutral and therefore only practiced combos. Getting to a point of what I should do and when didn't really become apparent in any "Beginner guide for character X". But with this I now have a better idea of what to do. To convert pokes, anti airs and mix ups into combos I now feel like I understand fg much more. THANK YOU!

Idk what it is, but it's usually so hard for me to get the basics down for a character. I can get the basic fighting game fundamentals down okay since most games transfer over easily enough, but it takes me so long to process buttons for characters and their traits. This'll help a lot. Thanks for the digging this out of the archive

🤔 It's kinda hard to tell what's bugging someone without seeing them play firsthand, but lemme give this a go~ How quickly do you find single buttons that feel great to spam❓ Many new players grow to cling to moves with *high* risk return & *high* usefulness, enough that they may develop a whole playstyle around pressing a single button 🚨. Almost every fg character has such an attack (so they feel stable to play), so what's your experience finding such moves❓

9:36 is kind of funny for this specific example because in general for KOF as a series level 1 supers are oftentimes NOT invincible and therefore not good as reversals. Shen just happens to be one of the characters that actually does have a fully invincible level 1 super that's fairly usable as a reversal so it worked out.

This is really helpful! I've been messing with fighting games my whole life and I tend to stay with characters that have existed since the 90s. learning a character is always easier if you already know another character from a game, and know how to use universal mechanics. personally theres no order what i feel like doing when i learn a character. sometimes i might play ai, sometimes i go into training mode and do whatever, as well as see what combos might be on mizuumi, or whatever wiki. sometimes i've watched jp players before it comes out. sometimes i just play someone and try random shit while playing. you just eventually learn other shit and figure stuff out as you go, and either way you might eventually have to break habits.

It may be because I am a former MOBA player, but after learning the moves I find the best range for the character to be at to be a threat a majority of the time. After that I learn a simple combo then play online until I can see the opening for the said combo consistently. It's not too far off the theory I applied to League to learn characters- I'm just now using two hands to do inputs vs playing the piano with the qwertg keys. I guess it also helped being a solo laner in League since if I did poorly I'd know it's my fault I did poorly and all I'd have to do is reflect on what I could've done differently and apply it for next time.

That definitely sounds like a MOBA mentality lol If it works for you then that’s all that matters

This is such a good explanation. I come from Smash, so it's easier to learn characters there since there's universal controls, you just have to learn move properties and frame data. Traditional fighting games took my awhile to learn how to play characters., but I've started getting the hang of it and really want to now for SF6 when that drops.

Step 5 is huge! I was learning some Android 21 stuff on DBFighterz the other day, and a lot of it was too fast/confusing for me. Instead, I learned what the combo enders are and shortened it to what I could do at that moment. When you mentioned learning your character in and out, it reminded me of MK9. I mained Sub-Zero and learned one of the bread and butter 10hit combos. My roommate like Kung Lao, and I never saw him use a BnB or crazy long combo. Just really good teleports, high/low hat throw mixers, and super good short combos that allowed him to control the flow of the match. It worked greatly for him. If you can keep hitting M>M>H and it keeps working, then keep using it! Also if that's not Grimmjow Jaggerjack, it's Tōshirō Hitsugaya.

How do you quickly learn when it's your turn without memorizing frame data of every single character? I'm struggling with trial and error to find out what's plus on block
@BrendanMushi
@BrendanMushi 2 жыл бұрын
pick player 1 & player 2 to both be the character you're trying to find out what's plus or not. Record the dummy doing the move on block and then hold up afterwards, so that your character jumps after doing the move then save the recording. Now, play it back and block the attack. After you block the recording hold up, whichever character jumps first is plus. So if you just watch who reaches the apex of the jump first or who lands on the ground first, that character is on advantage and if they both jump at the same time an are at equal height then it's 0 on block. Keep in mind that if the move in question is jump cancelable then this technique wont work, but its a quick and easy way to find out if a move is plus without looking up the frame data.
