Been there done that. Luckily, I already had a marathon or 2 under my belt. My loving mom decided to sign me up for a marathon 1 month prior. I decided I would do the jeff galloway method. Run easy for so many minutes and walk for so many minutes. It was still super tough but it made it so I could finish.

😂 if only it were that easy. And if you remember, once Barney sat down on the subway post marathon in that episode he couldn't get back up, so if you want to be able to continue to run afterward I suggest following Coach Morgan's advice!

Thank you so much for this! I'm 54 and have recently starting running again after more than a decade. I did my first OCR this summer and just signed up for a half marathon mountain race in October. 3 runs a week is all I have had the time for. I work a weekend schedule, so my runs are Mon. Tue. and the long run on Thurs. So many doubts about my sanity for attempting this, but your message gives me the confidence I can do this! It's good to know I'm not alone in setting a seemingly crazy goal!!!

Good luck in your half!! I'm in a similar boat with a hectic work schedule, but I've tackled so many "crazy" goals with the resources I had at the time, with zero regrets and many awesome memories. Have a blast!!

Sadly, I do the swing my legs like 3 times side to side, cause I saw someone else do it. Maybe back and forth a couple times, reach for the sky once and go.

My minimal training marathon went down like: 3 training runs in the 1 month leading into the marathon. One 10 mile run, followed the next week by a 12 mile long run, and then a 15 mile long run. I had trained for a marathon in May but it was postponed until October, my training got sidelined by work. Determination in hand, and know idea about nutrition, I finished my First ever marathon with very little training at 5:27:48. I returned to the same course the following May, and was able to pull out a 4:16:52. Cliff Blocks are my go to.

Loved this, perfect timing!! I try to do a few slow slightly undertrained 50ks and a marathon every year, but due to issues beyond my control this year, I've only managed 1 terribly undertrained marathon. (7 mile long run. ) I've always believed we can tackle hard things as long as we have a decent base level of fitness and approach it in a realistic way. I think that's better than never trying hard things because we don't think we'll ever be ready. I've got a 6 hour trail event coming up next weekend. Due to twisting my ankle in the Kismet Cliff run 2 weeks ago (Coach Morgan you've got to check it out, it's fierce!!) my long runs are only 5 miles... I'm just praying for a marathon at this point, and that is probably a bit unrealistic. Hopefully my base and my stubbornness carries me through like it always has, but regardless, I'll have a cool experience and memories to look back on! Best wishes to everyone on their somewhat ill advised but awesome adventures!!

This was great info. I have a trail race series exactly a week from today 34 miles in 3 days, Bryce Canyon, Zion, and Horseshoe bend. I am getting the feeling now I haven’t trained like I should have been, having doubts. I have never done anything like this before, but I do run trails all the time I love running on that type of terrain vs road. I have been hill training too, 2-4 days per week, but I just have not been doing any long runs. Also I am nervous about the altitude, I am coming from San Diego at 500 ft to Bryce Canyon 8000 ft! My longest training run is 6.5 miles. I have really enjoyed all the Run Experience videos you guys are awesome and very informative!!
@arriannazirbes5857
@arriannazirbes5857 Жыл бұрын
Good luck to you and enjoy the beautiful views - that is my favorite area in the country!! Have you ever been to 8,000 ft before? If you are concerned about it, I would recommend getting a prescription for acetazolamide to prevent altitude sickness. Talk to your doctor about it first to see if it's right for you. Since your trip is in just a week maybe you can schedule a telemedicine appt? I have had altitude sickness in the past (and it's awful), so I tried this medication before a trip I had to the mountains at about 8,000-10,000 ft altitude, started taking it about 2 days before my trip, and had zero issues! I definitely recommend at least looking into it if you're worried. It could really help. Best wishes :)

That would be a DNF waiting to happen 🙂- I started running at the age of 51 and now after two and a half year I went from zero to 15K, and I hope to convince my body that a half marathon in 2023 is a good idea. I do run 3 times a week as you described (interval, easy, long) and have strength training in between, and I am slowly increasing the weekly milage to stay injury free.
@willdallas53
@willdallas53 Жыл бұрын
No it wouldn’t. The average person can walk a full marathon and still finish. People wildly overestimate how hard it is to just finish a marathon. I started from not being able to run two blocks without stopping and did 7 full marathons in my first year running.
@Kelly_Ben
@Kelly_Ben Жыл бұрын
Same, I did a marathon after a 7 mile long run using intervals. My 50ks were completed, uninjured, with 12 mile long runs. I definitely don't think it's the BEST or SAFEST way, but I feel it's better to go after what you want with what you've got, instead of waiting (wasting) years for the scenario to be ideal. Best wishes on your upcoming race, you'll kill it!

Reporting back! Final time was 4:39:52. Short summary: 1-13: Felt pretty okay 13-20: PAIN. My hip flexors were shot. 20-22: Second wind. 22-25: Adrenaline mixed with absolute agony. 25-26.2: WHOOOO!!!! My hip flexors were basically turned into hamburger meat, which is unusual for me. I didn’t get that pain until like mile 90 into my 100 miler. At least I didn’t hit the wall during Berlin? 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think that I need to do some more strength training this winter.

I may be on the opposite side of the spectrum. My first marathon is in 26 weeks and I've already started training 😅 . I've set a goal that I think I can hit, I've done several trail runs of 3h30m+ recently so I think my goal is achievable. I respect the distance and also I don't want to injure myself during training or in the race. Besides there are some triathlons and other races still ahead, so I need to fit them in with some recovery afterwards.
