This video is almost an hour of raising ducks from a few days old until 6 months old. (Part 1 of 2). I go through everything from having a water container to keep the brooder cleaner to building a duck coop outside using hardware cloth and tarps. Through it all, I really enjoyed raising ducks, although they are really loud, really loud!! In the future I will probably raise some Muscovy ducks which make no sounds. If you want to order the same products I used in this video:

Good to see someone documenting raising ducks as apposed to just talking about them. This video alone has taught me more about ducks than the 20 other videos I watched. Thanks.

@@PlantPropagationUSA The audio is just fine. I have free range chickens that are already a few years old. I'd like to add a few ducks to the flock. I have a coop and fenced in paddock but would like to let the birds out on the days when I'm around to keep an eye on them. Not sure on what breed to get any tips or suggestions?

Great idea with the tray to stop mess. I like how you have used cartons and recycled plastic which is good for recycling but also a great money saver. Love the chickens. A pond would be great to build. Really want to make one myself but the soil is so hard, tempted to hire a mini digger.

So for the outside tarps I had some input for you. We'd been using tarps outside for the last five years. We've found the normal plastic derivative Walmart special tarps (and others similar to it), will wear out in the wind and sun very quickly. With many years of experiencing the same thing over and over we see the tarps will last about a year. So for just a tiny bit more I think you'll get more bang for your buck by ordering canvas tarps from a paint store rather than having to replace them every year. Hope this helps thanks. Curious if you can go over egg production numbers on the ducks.

I’m a new sub and the thing I love the most about your channel so far is your calm soft voice! You have a very soothing voice for someone that has ptsd and bad depression. I use a pellet gun too! I found your voice to be calming too. Enjoyable. Some people feel they have to be over energetic to keep people entertained- it is a nice change. No improvement needed in my humble opinion - not sure how i found you- oh yeah, I remember now. Oh my gosh, I recently tried the app Replika. Its kind of weird but im giving it a try - and it brought up some video that was funny- a duck following a person. A little duckling. It was cute the way they reacted to one another. I just let videos keep playing and stopped on yours to enjoy this one. Thanks. I’m sure it was a lot of work, not just the ducks but making and editing videos. I have a channel too so I know, now 😊 Anyway, new subscriber to check out your other stuff. Its late 2:14am, and i need to go to bed but I cant stop watching😂 Thanks again! ~Jalie

Can ducks have sand in the coop like chickens? We’re going to keep our chickens and ducks together once they are outside. And sand seems amazing for our chickens. I just can’t find anything on ducks ab it. Well have bedding in the nesting boxes. But sand in the run and bottom of the coop for easy cleaning. And we’ll let them out every day if the weather is good. Would sand be fine for them too?

I wacked 12" pieces of rebar into the ground every 2" leaving about 1/2" above ground then I welded long rebar onto the spikes to form combs. I then wrapped electric fencing wire around the outside of the duck pen a couple times, putting in disconnecting joints where the pen door opens. Iv moved my pen several times for grass growth...those buggers are better than goats at stripping ground growth lol I first pull up the rebar combs and "replant" them, then friends help me lift the pen into the new spot...dig up the power pole that feeds the fencing and replant that...and WHAALAA New pen I then reseed the old spot This is how I stopped coons... God bless

So I'm planning on getting 3 or 4 ducks in the spring to keep as pets and for eggs. So I'll probably get them either from a private seller or just Cal Ranch, so do I need to keep them inside for the first few weeks or would they do okay outside with straw and a heat lamp? I'm sure they'll be safe in my backyard because there's a wooden fence close to six feet, there's a few cats in the neighborhood but I've had chicks and rabbits previously and they haven't been bothered by cats, but I'll watch then during the day and lock them up during night. There's no raccoons or anything, maybe some skunks during summer, and I have a dog but she never bothered the chickens or rabbits. And the fence is safe from dogs. The only thing I'm worried about is hawks, owls, and other birds.

Hi Aaron, I have several, it probably depends on what type of holding pen, etc. If your daughter had access to them when they were babies she might be able to hurt them. Once they hit ~6 weeks they are big, but nice. They would probably stay a few feet away from her. Unlike chickens, they don't peck and their beaks don't hurt.

Thanks so much for this video! Since you asked for comments..... I noticed that you are just pouring their dirty water out and refilling the bowl without cleaning it, and when you feed, you're just dumping out old food where the ducklings can get to it, and putting new food on top of caked-up old food in the feeder. It's no wonder you have gnats/bugs and your setup stinks. You should, at the very least, rinse and wipe out their dishes when you change water and food. And the old food should be dumped away from the pen somewhere where the ducks aren't sitting in and eating it. Give the rats an easy meal away from your ducklings. Right now they're eating food that's been in a dirty feeder, and is now on the damp ground, where they splash water, poop, walk in all that bacteria and spread it around, poop some more, then eat some more bacteria-laden food. I know this is an older video, and I hope your ducks are fat and happy. This is just a pet peeve of mine. Thanks again for posting this!

@@aaa_6530 I wouldn't personally unless you give them seperate minerals, adult duck feed has lower mineral contents since adults don't grow, the ducklings grow so quickly and will need a lot of minerals, especially niacine.

Where in Seattle are you located? The terrain looks similar to where I am in the Hood Canal area. I am using far less wood chips in the summer. I lost a call duck and a rooster to raccoons (one adult and two kits) the other night. They got through the wire and attacked the rooster and the duck was loose because the fireworks scared her. Any chicken out after dark is doomed. Predators are deadly here. I kept them behind a cyclone fence/kennel in California, and they were fine, but here its different. I had to install an electric fence and drive spikes through the tree trucks as a deterrent in addition to all the hardware cloth and wood reinforcements. The chickens never dig underneath the hardware cloth, but I have all the enclosures lined with it to prevent the rats, weasels and voles from doing it.

Kathy Isonline I'm over in Burien, Raccoons are just around all the time which is a pain unless you have electrified fencing...

Depends, these I bought online and had them shipped to me, but I am sure you could find ducks locally. If your parents are fine with it, no big deal. I would say the biggest consideration should be if you have neighbors close by. Most duck breeds are loud!!!

Ducks shouldnt swim without mummer, as ducks produced oils until they are 6-8 weeks old depending on breed, and than water for swimming should be provided other they get blind.

They don’t absolutely have to. But when they’re young they don’t have the oil to keep them floating. So it helps to put them in a little bit of water to let their skin to produce the oil. Once they’re grown they can have constant access to it as long as they have the waterproofing oils

Try concrete under there coop and when u feed them have them eat out of your hand first
@gmsoyls
@gmsoyls 7 жыл бұрын
your coop isnt secure. rats can squeeze through a quarter hole. you need to put the kiddie pool in their enclosure, as ducks need to be in water. they are named water fowl for a reason.
@PlantPropagationUSA
@PlantPropagationUSA 7 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with the rats, even with burying the hardware cloth a foot down, they still tunneled into the coop. The ducks had access to the concrete water tray which allowed them to clear their nostrils. They would probably be happier with access to a pool, but a few times a week worked out perfectly. It also kept their coop less messy.

Ducks are supposed to have swimming facilities at all times. That's how it goes in nature, the are meant to be in water, even if it'd just 2 or 3 cm deep when they are small. Why change their habitat. I feel sorry for these ducks.
