How to raise ducklings and ducks the clean, easy and efficient way on the homestead!
I used to be anti-duck, because of the mess the ducklings made during the brooding phase.
After many years of trial, error, and scouring the internet for better solutions, we have an efficient, clean and easy brooding setup for ducklings.
Ducks are hardier than other fowl, make great meat and egg production animals on the farm, and can be a great addition to any homestead. However brooding ducklings can be a challenge.
In this video, we share with you how to keep ducklings during the brooding stage the neat and clean way.

I raised some ducklings and when they grew up, I put them in my backyard lake. To this day, all four ducklings still visit us! Without these types of videos, I wouldn’t have ever started the duckling raising project! Thank you!!

I wish I had watched this video two months ago! This was officially my last stinky, mucky, super gross duck brooding season (we only had one with our chicks and still had to change the trough every day.) Next year we are adopting this system and finding new uses for our large metal Tractor Supply trough and clip-on exposed light bulb. Thanks for the excellent info!

Good morning. I raised my duck from a few weeks old. I purchased the duckling and placed him under my T shirt. I just kept him there, except for his feeding and watering. I slept with him and he kept warm. How to firm up his poo. I put yogurt in his water, which I do every morning and evening. After a few weeks I mixed whole wheat with his baby food. when fresh corn came into season, I would roast the corn on the coals a bit, then remove and feed them to him. He loved it and in 2 months he got very big. He always sits with me. we talk with each other. Now that he is big, at night he sleeps in front of a large mirror. I put news papers on the floor in front of the mirror. I clean up in the morning. Any place he has pooed, I just collect it and place it in my orchids or my roses. I have one room with over 50 orchid plants, so his poo is great for my orchids and my roses on the roof of the building. I live in Tangiers, Morocco. I feed him any fruit I am eating for breakfast. Now days, it is black grapes. Before that it as apricots and peaches. He is sitting with me now. At night, he stays with me until he wants to sleep. He will go and sleep in front of the mirror, which is at night after sunset. Also in the morning, I have a push scraper to clean the floors and bathroom. I use it to remove his excess water on the floor around his water. So, I keep him in the apartment. I take him to the roof, when I am watering my roses, flowers and trees there. In the afternoon, he takes a nap with me. He likes to put his head next to mine and sleeps. I guess that he is a male. Actually I do not know, but no eggs as yet. I pet him and scratch his neck and chest, etc. He likes to kiss me on my beard or put his head on my shoulder. He always stays with me, except when I am watering, or cleaning or washing my clothes. He would sit in front of the mirror, or sit in from on the computer and watch the news. So, ducks do not have to be messy. No, I do not have a tub of water for him to swim. Maybe, I will try that next month. I can use the roof for that. His feathers are growing out no days and his is spreading them out and fanning them, so I am thinking that he is a male. when I am talking with him and joking with him, he just talks and talks back to me. He always has an answer. hen he comes to me, he is always quacking to inform me that he is coming. If he can not find me, he also, is making a noise, looking for me. Then I call him, he comes and stops. He needs to know where I am all the time. If I go out he just waits for me at the door, until I come home. Yes, he has a smell, but it is not an issue. I keep my apartment clean and the duck, but my friend here says that my apartment smells a bit like a duck. I have only this one duck, no others. Before I got this duck, I used to have a chix, but hen they grow up, they are aggressive and do not make good pets. My duck is never aggressive and very loving. I prefer him to any bird, cat or dog. Cats are not so friendly and males are very smelly. Dogs are big and problem. Small birds are not good pets, so my duck is the answer. He is very friendly and loving, never a problem and also can be funny at times. SELIM AL RASHID

This is such a good idea! I raised 6 ducks this year and they were *so* messy as babies, but I really love them as adults (they are much friendlier and more confident than my chickens! Plus they are doing much better in the cold weather than the chickens are. The chickens stay in their coop and only come out for food, while the ducks seem to enjoy the 7" of snow we've already gotten). I'm definitely getting more ducks next year, and am happy to find a good way to keep them cleaner!

My husband surprised me for our anniversary got me ducklings completely unprepared absolutely nothing five weeks ago. Sadly I lost two of the four ducklings. We have a small animal cage. It's plastic bottom and wire top. We've raised several baby birds in it. It's easy to clean and keeps the other animals out. There's room in it for the laydown/stand up heater until the weather is nice enough to put them out with the adult birds. The ratchet straps for the lights are a great idea! If we decide to hatch more, I may implement that.

I got a hard lesson today about ducklings and water. The ones I got were being raised outside with their mom. I put mom and her ducklings in a closed in pen and put a square tub inside half-filled with water. The ducks loved swimming in it, but the sides of the tub were too high to jump out. In the morning I found 4 dead, and one barely hanging on that did live on. I added 4 bottles that were 8 oz. filled with tap water to the bottom. Now they can have a few inches of water, but still able to hop out to be with mama.

I once found a goose egg in my yard. Did so many duck and goose reasearching, I basically wasted my time and heating pad over an infertile egg. Then one day a duck came to my yard, I fed her, gave her water, and she kept coming back, one day with her ‘mate’. So I tried to get her in my backyard for some more food, but they left and I see her around. ❤

I found my waterer didnt fit on the small metal cover and kept sliding down. If you try this I recommend going to the actual store and not using the links. I ended up brooding my ducklings in the bath tub and it is working really well and keeping enough dry area for my ducklings.

We previously had a house security system/intercom before getting chicks. Once they hatched, my mom turned it into a “chick cam” 😂😂😂. She love it because she doesn’t have to smell the baby chicks, but she could see how cute they are!

I made a brooder that’s like a GUI is pig sage with a tray you can pull out..., I bought a plastic bathmat that has holes in it but it’s softer on their feet than the wire cage and then I put doggy training pads on the bottom because I think shavings are messy and I’ve heard of them eating them too which is not good..... I have a little bed area on one side of it and then that food and water on the other and then when they make a mess and go back to their bed area the water and food just falls through to the bottom tray. I also think it’s nice that they can see out of it instead of a salad Tupperware container and I just have a blanket on top. Underneath the bedding area I have a dog heating mat that goes under dog beds fold it in half to keep that area warm but it’s covered with a doggy training pad and blankets or towels. He lives can be dangerous too as they can be a fire hazard and also I felt like it wasn’t very nice to keep a bright light shining on them when they’re trying to sleep

When you said brooding I freaked out since I thought we had to do something with the ducks like trimming or something of that sort. It’s a fancy word in my dictionary I guess😅

I like the idea of having two free rubbermaid tubs that are ready to go on cleaning day. But I really think next year we're going to try raising our ducks in a spare bathtub inside the house.

I'm going to be trying an Ecoglow brooder. No worries about fire, only 14 watts, and no light on 24/7 so at night it's dark for sleeping.

I haven’t used the Nest cams, but I have used the Blink XT cams for my chickens. The Blink XT has night vision and temperature which you can monitor. Newer models have two way audio like your Nest. The Blink XT are closer to $100 I believe. Worth checking out to compare to your Nest. Great video. Thanks!
