Super easy to raise, mealworms are the perfect supplementary feed for lots of pets including chickens and reptiles.

Those poor babies... I remember taking care of one in school. Watching it from and egg to a teeny tiny worm that grew into a big larva. Once it got to the pupa stage I was so excited! I would visit my science class everyday I had school to check on him. (My teacher was so sweet, she just let me go see him on my lunch break lol) Then he turned into a beautiful Darkling Beetle. I called him "Valo" (It means Light in Finnish). I got to take him home. All the other kids thought I was weird because they didn't even want to look at their baby lol. I was a proud mama.

You sound like I was in school with stuff like this! I found black swallowtail caterpillars on my carrots and I took them inside to prevent them from being parasitized by wasps and I would feed them fresh carrot tops several times a day. After a few weeks they turned into beautiful black swallowtail butterflies. I love doing stuff like this!

If you have thousands of beetles you won't have the time to pick them out. In that case, you would want a self sorting set up. If you don't want to pick the beetles out every week or two you can just use oats for their bedding and put a screen bottom on your drawer. Correct? And put very little bran in the drawer underneath that the eggs fall into. As you will want to keep adding to it's content every two weeks. Adding baby Mealies to the same drawer over and over. Be sure to add moisture so the drawer with the Mealy babies and eggs so they will grow big and strong. Hope this is correct. Great Video!

what do you do with the dead beetles< can you feed those to the chickens as well??

Hi...is raising these live worms to feed more cost effective than feeding the dry ones? ie do you end up with enough on hand to feed your chickens?

Hi, could you possibly give details of your tower storage boxes used for this purpose, I presume I could get them from Amazon but they list so many different ones and I would like to be sure of getting the ideal size. Thanks.

Hey. I got mine from a shop rather than online but they are a standard A4 size that would usually be used in an office. Hope that helps.

Do the adult beetles die after laying eggs? I just had my first hatch and moved my beetles over now 4 days later half have died and I'm not sure why.
@sterlingmorningstar967 Жыл бұрын
What ratio of adult beetles to growing worms... And then how do you know how many worms to let mature to be your breeding stock? Do you put them in a special container? Could you sift the beetle drawer so the eggs fall through into a clean drawer rather than trying to pick out the adults?

Can I use Zoo Med's - Eco Earth Coconut Fiber as a substrate for breading meal worms and super worm? Will I need bran or any additional food source or can I just use the Coconut Fiber without any other food source?
@cityself-sufficiency4 жыл бұрын
Hey! You can use coco fibre as a substrate but you would need to feed them as well I'm afraid. If you gave them some chopped potato or carrot in there as well then they should be fine.
@barlow29763 жыл бұрын
@@cityself-sufficiency No, they will starve on coco. They need any kind of grain meal. Young worms benefit from finer feeds, I use budget flour.
@cityself-sufficiency3 жыл бұрын
Hello! You can keep, grow and breed mealworms on any substrate so long as they have access to food and a source of water. I have kept them in sawdust before and they have been fine so long as they are fed. It’s just easier if they are kept in an edible bedding.

Since the eggs are microscopic and not visible to the human eye, how do you separate the Beatles from the eggs to prevent them eating them?
@brou9715 жыл бұрын
I saw another video (haven't seen this yet to the end) but you can put a screen with little holes at the beetle's draw so they fall into the other draw.

How many do you start with?
@cityself-sufficiency4 жыл бұрын
Hello! I would start with about 100- 200 at least. Some will die, and some will fail to pupate. So that way you can pretty much ensure when they pupate you will have plenty of healthy adults ready start the next batch and the colony numbers will multiply nice and quickly.
