Gotta find the healthy balance of playing decks new players can compete against and, every now and then, showing them the meaning of true power. Gotta play the good decks against them sometimes so they can learn and grow from seeing those decks play out.

First off i want to say that I appreciate the video and all of the thought processes being framed towards new players. There are a lot of resources out there that simply glaze over these points with an assumption that the viewer has already been playing for years, and that is not always the case. With that being said, I offer my opinion on the greater topic of power level. There will never be a great way to objectively look at commander deck power level, because there are way too many variables at play. The numeric scale is worthless, because it is entirely subjective. Everyone will have a different opinion on what deck is what number and why. The broad "casual, low power, mid power, and high power" labels arent much better, in that they are still pretty subjective even when considering what turn you goldfish a win at. Goldfishing alone doesnt consider deck redundencies, different permutations that can lead to similar or better results, the pod composition, the gameplay dynamic of each individual game, the cards your opponents are playing that can inadvertently accelerate your gameplan, etc. A better approach to the whole discussion would be for everyone at the table to be honest about gameplay intent. Are they trying to hangout and do wacky stuff while letting everyone do their decks thing, are they trying to grind out a fun interactive game which will have back and forth play and ultimately come to a close in a reasonable amount of time (where every player may or may not get to do their thing), or are they simply trying to win as quickly as possible by any means necessary? With the agreed upon intent of the pod set none of the other variables like individual card choices, the decks goldfish win turn, subjectively applied power level number, etc really matter. As long as everyone is honest on intent then no one is going to bring a hyper tuned cedh deck to a casual game, because that would be dishonest. Dishonesty of gameplay intent is why the term "pubstomping" even exists. People who pubstomp are being dishonest about their intent for the game, and really need to win against people playing in an entirely different way to feel validated (probably because they cant win in a fair fight). I think this is one of the reasons that cedh is starting to gain popularity, because at the very least everyone has agreed upon gameplay intent (regardless of what deck people brought to the table). Keep making great content and much love man ❤

I feel like goldfishing is a very solid way to test redundancies. If your deck consistently wins turn 7-8 you have solid redundancy’s and the deck works. When I say goldfish at turn 7 I’m talking several playtests 10 at minimum. From there you can test the deck and find out if it needs more removal/interaction but, at least you know your strategy is solid if that makes sense. I definitely see your point but goldfishing is the best way a player can individually accurately test a decks power level 90% of the time. I 100% agree having a proactive conversation before hand is definitely the way but honestly a lot of players don’t know the right questions to ask they all blindly say my decks a 7 and run it. I definitely agree with a lot of what you’re saying and I appreciate the love 😁

You have to keep in mind that when you goldfish a CEDH deck, you can normally find a win turn 1-3 for turbo decks and around 3-5 for most other decks. The reason that CEDH games go to turn 6 ish on average is because there is a lot of interaction in the games so it’s unrealistic to compare tournament average turns where there is interaction with straight gold fishing a deck since gold fishing doesn’t usually account for other player interaction
@decktechsfordecks
@decktechsfordecks 8 ай бұрын
I was comparing people saying their casual games on average end before turn 7. I still stand by if your casual decks are wining turn 4-5 you’re nearing cedh at that point. I go on to say later in the video if you’re goldfishing turn 7 with your casual decks you can expect to win around turn 10 due to interaction. 😁

I played a lot in high school (2003-2006) but it was only standard, I learned commander just about two years ago so I'm still getting the hang of commander. My first commander deck was built in a similar fashion to my favorite standard deck, and I quickly learned that strategy doesn't work in a multiplayer format. Since then I believe I've gotten better and have built two decks that I feel are decent, but i have no idea how to rate the power level, this video is a very interesting take and I appreciate it.

That’s very true! Which could be a whole video on its own haha. I’ve also found goad/theft decks are extremely hard to evaluate by goldfishing. The only thing I will say is. Sense I’ve gold fished so many decks so often you do kind of get a knack for where your board state should be and if you’re keeping up value wise but that’s really all goldfishing does for you in those scenarios!

My best deck can probably win at maybe turn 10 most of the time sometimes earlier sometimes later. I love this deck but Idk how to make it any better than it already is. You seem nice wish I could play/learn from you irl. Take it easy man appreciate the video it kinda helped a little. Oh yea also the first time I ever played both my friends they both used mana web and defense grid against me and I didn't even know what the cards did. They both said they took the cards out but then put them in before we played. Made me feel like I didn't get to play the game at all. Still though I tried and learned and got further than I thought I could.

@olcar7799

As a fellow dinosaurs player with pantlaza as a commander, Etali, primal conqueror can really help, when you pay the 9-10 to transform it…it gets indestructible and does Toxic damage, Akroma’s will that is in the precon is an amazing finish card. Also, Huatli Poet of unity is a nice creature, when it is transform into a saga, the saga level 4 is a finisher (gives double strike and trample to your dinosaurs). Invasion of Ikora also useful, it’s a tutor or graveyard recursion… it »s a battle… when it is transformed on your field 8-8 dinosaurs that allow you to assign damage of your non human creature… as if they are not blocked. Hope that helps. It is a fun deck that is a bit slow but can pop off like crazy if the game stretches… hard to finish games early… almost impossible Im still a new player (Ixilan is my first set and dinosaurs is the reason I got the commander 4 pack) Enjoy!

I win more often than i would like in my playgroup. Obviously its great to win but in our playgroup there is a player who plays krenko, slivers, edgar markov constantly and i felt like i needed to make better decks to compete. But our other two players are 1. Prefers mid power janky strats and 2. More restricted by budget and mostly plays the same deck each week. Ive built a couple of decks to try and be at a lower power level and also upgraded one of the new precons and ive encouraged the tribal player to build some lower powered stuff since he has the biggest collection out of all of us. I try to find good cards and 2 card combos for the budget player to encourage him to power up his deck a bit. Its a constant balance to try and get everyone around the same level but we still have fun.

This is something I have been struggling with recently. I have some mates who just got into Magic and my decks seem to be outclassing them on every level without truly understanding the why. When I started EDH I had some good mates of mine who were running some optimised decks which have skewed my understanding of the power levels in the game. Been trying to help my new player mates, but they shut down once a half-decent combo gets played that doesn't even win a game. Very hard balance.

I have similar problems. My suggestion is to play decks with intentionally difficult win conditions. That way you get to play the fun powerful cards, but you're not just craterhoofing for the win. I have a Door to Nothingness deck that I won't let win with anything but Dooring everyone. I have some decks that seem fun but that I can never make "work" as well as I hope, like Ob Nixilis Captive Kingpin. So I play that against them, too. Or I see what deck they're playing and intentionally pick a deck I know is weak against that deck. I also have some mostly unmodified precons that I play against them.

What would you recommend for someone who wants to encourage their group to build at higher power levels? @NateFinch
@NateFinch 8 ай бұрын
The doctor who precons are barely decks. They're not really built to be played as a deck, it's more like they took all the cards from a doctor who set, jammed them into 4 decks, based loosely on theme, and called it a day. The decks are good value for the price, so I would recommend them if you want several of the more expensive cards... But I wouldn't recommend playing them like a normal precon.

As a disclaimer, I played MTGA for about a year and a half or so when it launched and hadn’t played any more Magic until summer of 2023 when some of my friends got me to try commander (which I’m loving, by the way). However, I’m interested in homebrewing decks, and I want to make sure that I don’t go overboard and start making or using decks that are too powerful. For the record, I’m not interested in making decks that cost more than $100, so I’m not going to be running a bunch of expensive, crazy powerful cards. With all that said, I have two questions after watching your video. 1) What is goldfishing? 2) I still don’t really know how to rate my power level; are the power levels “casual” and “pub stomping?” I don’t know how to decide whether my deck is too strong on average compared to them other than if I’m regularly winning or if I’m winning and the games aren’t close. How do I get an idea of a more specific power level from my deck other than “casual” and “pub stomping” to compare to their decks?

Yes the majority of the lists on my channel can goldfish a turn 7 win using pure synergy and no fast mana. There’s obviously some exceptions like extreme budget lists or goad lists that need to utilized opponents decks to win the game. This means in an actual game the decks tend to win turn 8-10 sense People play interaction.

@decktechsfordecks OK, but I'm still kinda confused. By turn 7, do we mean that I am removing a player from the game/ "going nuclear"? Or is it referring to killing all 3 of my opponents? I love the video BTW. This is the only concept I didn't find 100% clear
@decktechsfordecks
@decktechsfordecks 8 ай бұрын
That will very deck to deck. I usually prefer all 3 players dead but will easily settle for at least 2 dead sense we can probably count on peoples life totals getting lowered throughout the game. Another exception is voltron specifically without red sense you don’t have access to extra combat steps it can be pretty hard to goldfish a turn 7 sense you can only kill one player a turn depending on the deck. The main thing you want to ask yourself is if you have a board state so dominating your opponents are 100% dead the next turn or that turn. This will ensure the gameplan of the deck works and you can tweak the interaction pieces from there. Keep in mind there’s some archetypes that this will just not work for, such as stax, goad, and heavy control lists but honestly in casual those lists aren’t the norm. I hope this helped 😁

I remember being a pioneer in my local area for EDH, about 2009 ish. It was such a blast. No rule 0. No crying about power level. Everyone knew to expect to get your butt kicked or dish out Ls.

To be fair, the types of cards being designed in 2009 were a lot different than cards now, and Commander was even more casual and unexplored. No dockside extortionist, no fierce guardianship, no Thassa’s oracle, no Urza or Yuriko or Lathril or Najeela or partner commanders, no smothering tithe…the list goes on. Rule 0 isn’t about “crying,” it’s about making sure people are on the same page about the game they’re trying to play, whether it’s precons or CEDH or in between.

1:46 You realize this is based off of other cedh decks right? Of course youre gonna win around turn 6 if you're facing a higher power level. If I were to bring my cedh deck to a casual table, I can easily win around turns 3-4. That's why basing it off of the turn you win isn't a good way to see how strong your deck is.
@decktechsfordecks
@decktechsfordecks 8 ай бұрын
It really is. If you’re gold-fishing anywhere between 2-3 it’s a cedh viable deck even 4-5 is when high control cEDH decks tend to win while goldfishing. So if you have a casual deck that is goldfishing turn 5 you’re either trying to pub stomp or your playgroup plays fringe cedh/high power casual. The goal of the video is so that an individual can judge the power level of their deck and goldfishing is probably one of the best ways to do that. It shows the highest potential of the deck because no one is interacting with it. I got the turn 7 average from experience and the lists I build on the channel. I use 0 fast mana and try to focus hard on high synergy and most of the lists end up at that 7 turn goldfish. So if someones goldfishing a 6 or 8 consistently it’s pretty close to high synergy casual but anything past 8 is either a high control list or dipping into lower power decks.

That’s where the nuance comes in for sure. It could almost be it’s own video haha. I feel like this will work for 90% of players. Goad decks fall into the same category they are super hard to goldfish.

I like all the advice here, but I feel like you went off on a tangent and the only actual answer to the thesis of the video is "you should goldfish by turn 7". To be fair, I think that's a valid step, but I dont think its the only step. I also think that you dont need to deal 120 damage by turn 7. Its probebly more like 90. Assume everyone has taken *some* damage by the other players. I think there needs to be a deck building component in here, though. Like, if you win hy turn 7 but you don't have any removal or card draw, you'll be hosed by the first combo or board lock piece someone drops, or by the first board wipe that coeans you out. I think that's where a lot of newer players fall down. Their deck may goldfish by turn 8, but if they face interaction or pillow forts, they just fall over.

The main thing that goldfishing does is prove the deck/concept of a deck works. From there playing is definitely the best way to upgrade/test decks. If the core of the deck is solid it’s easier to upgrade it and add interaction. Players can also notice more clearly oh shit he destroyed my key pieces and that shut the deck down I need more protection/recursion.

That’s definitely 100% the way to do it especially if you’re playing with complete strangers. Asking what turn the deck try’s to win is way more productive than asking a decks power level. 😊

The hardest part about edh is and will always be the social aspect. Building decks? Easy. Figuring out everybody's decks power level to make sure the games you play are balanced with the amount of interaction and tutors you run? Near impossible. I've found just telling everybody if you win with combos or not at the beginning.

I think we need to stop comparing casual to CEDH, whether a deck is casual or CEDH has more to do with how it was built, then it's power level. Specifically, everyone talks speed. My Vaelomachus of Lorehold deck is CEDH. I would never play it at a casual pod. Wins turn 8-12 usually. The whole deck is extra combats and land destruction. The turn it wins says nothing. I also have a very powerful mono-white planes walker deck that wins turn 12-16. Runs 18 board wipes, humility, etc. It's a casual deck.

I definitely believe your deck should be popping off at turn 7, but consistently winning? no. From my experience "though it could just be do to my areas LGS meta", most games I've played are won turn 8 to 9 with the occasional turn 7 and rarely turn 6 "6 usually due to lucky draws going into infinite damage/mill combos".
