Hey guys, in this week's DJ tips video, I am going to be attempting to teach you one of the most important skills of a DJ. This is the skill of being able to read a crowd. Reading a crowd is incredibly important as you need to know what music your audience is enjoying and what music your audience are disliking. This way you can make sure you please them all night.
This skill is a skill you have to learn by just going out there and DJing live, however, I can certainly give you some advice that will take you in the right direction.
In this video, I give you tips on reading a crowd. Hopefully, by the end of it, you will know how a dj knows what songs to play on the night.
If you have enjoyed my tips, make sure you go and check out my lessons at beginnerdjlessons.com

A great video! I'd add in that it's important for a resident DJ to make people spend their money. Get your momentum going then throw something a bit different into the mix - you might lose 10-20% of your dance floor, but those people will go and buy a drink: i.e. pay your wages! You'll also likely get new people onto the dance floor too. As someone who has managed venues as well as being a DJ, the best nights are where the dance floor is going but there's also a queue at the bar.

A resident DJ doesn't get played more if some one buys a drink, they get payed for the night and that's the pay then they go back next week and do the same thing. You don't get payed if 10 people buy drinks

@@zomb_rand0m16 What I mean is, for a night to be seen as successful by venue managers (your employer as a resident DJ), the takings are the measure they're going to look at. If you have a venue with 100 people in it and they're all on the dance floor all night but they only buy one drink each, that's less successful than an 80/20 split where everyone has the opportunity to buy two drinks.

I enjoy a company of dancing people much more than a company of drunk dancing people. I believe there are other ways to earn money as a DJ without involving bar schemes.

All great advice. My best advice is to find out everything about the venue (club owners and event organisers would usually know what visitors love to hear) and go from there. Think the key here is to find an appropriate crowd so the music genre specification and a quick chat is usually all that is needed. You wont find a group of unhappy girls wanting to hear ladygaga at a techno gig. You do have to select the appropriate tracks for the mood and feel the vibe to a certain extent but the "vibe" should go all directions - listeners have to feel your vibe. If it all goes to shit than just play your favourite tracks lol rather play the music that i Iove and have 3 people dancing with me than a whole crowd rocking to music you don't really like yourself.

I guess you'll be getting some flack by "serious" DJ snobs...but you covered most of the important bases in a very useful vid. I for one don't mind you citing some of your wedding/party 'bangers' regardless of genre. I'm always looking for music ammo to keep 'em on the floor. Thanks Phil.

There are no examples or cheat sheets. Its trial and error. It comes the more you do it. Trust me i used to ask myself. And relized. What works for one person dont work for another the best advice i got was from some yt video. Cant rememer who it was but they said its a number (age) game. Take a guess how old they(crowd) and start subtracting 10 years is and play. Within that decade. Obvious save the best for last and. Obvious. The younger the newer

I went to a wedding recently and the music was just SO BAD. Like, Irish country, some other old stuff that not even my parents would listen to. The elderly people were loving it though. Then he played Mr Brightside and I took that as my cue to go to bed. Me and 2 friends must have sat there with a face like a slapped arse, but all we wanted was SOMETHING DECENT TO DANCE TO! For my own wedding I provided the entire playlist (house, 90s club classics, few pop/throwbacks) and the 20-30s loved it. Guess you will never please everyone!

Do you have any advice on promoting events? I have a big party tomorrow night in Japan and here it's "Golden Week" now so everyone has a week long public holiday. I've worked really hard to promote it but there are a lot of people travelling during this time. I'm bricking it about if people are going to come or not! Would love to hear your thoughts!

Hi I would just like to say that in my opinion you can't really categorise people on how they look and what age group they are. It would be interesting to see how you would categories me I'm in my mid 30s I dress smart casual so what would you say that I listen to more of?

I've got a playlist from the bride and groom. I guess I'll have to try and sort the playlist by key and genre, but if a crowd for example especially likes a specific genre from the playlist, should I then continue with my own songs with the same genre or keep playing the playlist? Do I please the crowd or the bridal couple? (First wedding upcoming btw)

I've been practicing djing consistently for 6 months now and I'm planning on having a Halloween rave party down in my basement since it gives the vibes. I know my age group will be 26-mid 40s so I'm thinking of mixing in some old school techno like Satisfaction Benny Benassi and Sandstorm by Darude 😎 Thanks for the advice!!

Go for a "theme" list of all the relevant tracks, then compile a crate (you can also use the Camelot key guide to blend it better in key, but if you just go old school - brock it out!)
