How are we as techs supposed to understand the specifications we see on a split-phase motor's label? What's the difference between a motor's output power and its input power, and which of those specs is given on the label? What do acronyms like FLA and LRA mean? So……with compressors , I use a lot of Supco “universal” start devices. (Uro81,uro41 etc.) and very occasionally, I will install s hard start kit if needed. My concern is always selecting the appropriate kit for the compressor size. I was told to divide the LRA by 6 , and then use ohms law to convert to watts…..i then convert my watts to horse power. ( I do this because Supco only tells us what horse power compressor the start devices are to be used with ….,do you agree with the divide the LRA by 6 “rule” …???

It’s close enough for the fractional horsepower compressors that we work with.

Ive never had a compressor that the whirlpool 2 piece old school overload and relay wont work on except for linear compressor.

@@brandog1734 yeah… In a pinch we have all at one time or another install the wrong start device….😀just get the customer going… but, that begs the question… ???Why do they make different start devices at Supco with different horsepowers… Is it because the overload protector is slightly different? The relay could be the same … But the overload might have some slightly different specs… It could cause a larger compressor to go off on overload on a hot day… I guess

@@ike7933 the whirlpool overload i use has never had an issue.
