This is an excellent tutorial, most helpful! Would you happen to know what is the max recommended CVT temp? I'm considering TGV/EGR deletes and EBCS on my upcoming CVT WRX but want to make sure I take it easy on the CVT when it comes time to tune it.

This looks like another very useful series. I have an iPhone & I have a suspicion that the App you mention is not available for it unfortunately. It will be interesting to see how you go with an additional CVT fluid cooler. There is a long, long thread on one of the Subaru forums which suggest (I think) that if you can keep your CVT temperatures under control, you can modify the motor to something around Stage 2, and have it reliable. With my new J pipe & tune on my Levorg GTS 2.0, my only worry is the CVT oil temperature. I look forward to more great videos!

I bought this one as well but sent it back and upgraded to the MX version which adds a few more features but they are more for other vehicles (GM and Ford). I use it with Torque Pro but will take a look at the ActiveOBD plug in for it as well. I had actually been looking for something that would give more Subaru specific readings but didn't find anything a year or so when I was looking. One thing to note, at least with Torque Pro, make sure you exit the app when you shutdown the car. Doesn't matter the order. The issue is if the app (again at least TorquePro) is still connected to the ECU when you start the car, it will flip out. For instance lets say you stop for fuel real quick and have your phone plugged into a dash mount. Your dash will light up like a Christmas tree and the ECU will put the transmission in limp mode. This is because it will detect something interrupting some of the communications between the ECU and TCU and it doesn't know what is going on. The good news is that you can go in reset all the codes with TorquePro, turn off the car, close the app and restart the car and it will be back to normal. A simple restart won't reset the limp mode but manually scanning and clearing stored codes will get you back up and running. I have done this accidentally a couple times. Well at least this is what happens on my 2015 WRX Limited with the Push Button Start. I would assume other trim levels with traditional key are the same. Another note, I sent you a private message a while back with a link to an unlisted video that I made doing some testing. I was using my OBDLink MX paired to my Garmin Virb Ultra 30 to log ECU data right into the video. This works great and should work just fine with the LX version since they are the same as far as the Bluetooth communication. One of the reasons to avoid the cheap $20 units that I didn't hear you mention is that they don't all support high enough transfer rates. It is kind of hit and miss. This doesn't matter much if your intent is only to read and clear codes or reading something that doesn't change rapidly like a temperature reading. Where it comes into play is when doing data logging type activities. For instance sending RPM data to a Garmin Virb or Torque Pro. The cheap ones can't support near instantaneous data uploads so something like an RPM will only get updates every couple seconds for what the reading is at that point in time. With this OBD Dongle it will give near real time readings on those sensors that are constantly changing. Also these as you mentioned are a little more secure needing you to put it in pair mode by pressing the button on the top of the unit. I have had mine plugged into my car for about a year and a half now and never killed the battery. That is another concern, some units pull power even when the car is off and it can drain your battery if you park for an extended period of time like when you go on vacation without your car.

Boost & Shutter that makes sense. I panicked the first time I did it and put the car in limp mode. Just wanted to warn you in the event you didn't stumble across that "feature". I tried the new plug-in for Torque Pro. I added the CVT temp gauge but all the gauges that are part of the plug-in say something about full access disabled for some reason. I need to look into what is going on with that. Edit: figured it out. I had to go into settings on TorquePro and give plug-ins full access to the BT Dongle. It is working now.

Do you know if I can get the Active OBD graphic for power distribution that I see in the standalone app to display in Torque Pro? Love the visual for that in Active OBD but haven't found a way to get it to work in Torque Pro.

I like how pushing it a little bit is some quicker pulls to 60mph. You'll have that engine a long time. Don't bomb down the highway for 20miles at 120+mph like I do without letting off. I don't think the engine oil pump can deliver oil to all the right places under load at 4500rpm-5500rpm continuously

This was a very helpful video. Thank you. To anybody in the community what app should be used with iPhones? So I can read trans fluid temps. For all of you, knowing cvt fluid temp is highly important. Knowing fluid temp, is critical in performing cvt fluid level check procedure. The fluid level is checked by an over flow plug when temp is between a specified range. When cvt owner go to change their cvt fluid at 30-40k miles you will need to know this procedure to finish the job.

Hi B&S - wondering how you are going with your research on transmission cooling? I have decided to get a Mishimoto cvtf cooler for my Levorg, but have yet to find someone to install it. I hope my local Subaru dealer will. I also have to get a second hand samsung phone to run that software you are using (with an obt2 device) , given that iphones seem to be useless in this regard.

Thank you for the Video. I had a couple of AT Light events triggering the Engine Check Light, happened during traffic, or Red Stop Light, with Weather Temp around 106 to 112 F. I have followed your recommendation, and installed both the dongle and the paid Apps. Worked just great. Now I started to monitor and record my 2015 WRX CVTF temp and will see if I need to get on with the CVTF Cooler as per your other Video. Any idea, at what temp the AT light is triggered in order to program an Alarm? And, I am reading a CVTF Deterioration rate of 3.4% @ 35K Miles. Does that mean I still have 96.6% CVTF lifecycle? Thank you

You are right that the Cobb also adds the ability to display other sensor data. Not sure if transmission temp is one of them though. I don't have one so I can't say for certain. If you are going to tune you have to get a Cobb anyhow so that is a good way to try. I bought my OBDII dongle more for general use across all my vehicles and the vehicles of friends which the Cobb won't help with. That was a big reason for me to move up to the MX version. I think it might have been only $10-15 more. It wasn't a big price jump and added GM/Ford capabilities. Actually when I bought it I needed to pull the codes from a suspension error on our Yukon Denali.

Boost & shutter I am curious to find out if this will work on a 2003 Subaru Forester? I am assuming my car still has the temperature sensor for the transmission because it has the AT OIL TEMP LIGHT, but can't figure out how to pull the information through a OBD2 scanner, the scanner that I have right now is the BAFX PRODUCTS OBD2 DIAGNOSTICS INTERFACE combined with the paid app TORQUE PRO. I was really disappointed because when I was using the application Torque Pro Lite it didn't show me the option to set up transmission temperature sensor dials on the screen, so I purchase the torque app pro thinking that that's what I needed to do to be able to pull the transmission temperature but unfortunately transmission temperature sensor is not available to be set up as a child because OBD2 it's not pulling the information from the ECU on my car, if it's not too much to ask your input will be much appreciated!

I think you are using a cell phone mount in the CD Slot. I went with this one: www.amazon.com/Panavise-Mount-Subaru-Forester-Impreza/dp/B00KXHUDY8/ My dash is a bit different but someone mentioned it working on a 2017 WRX so it should fit yours as well. That gave me the base to which I then used a Pro Clip phone holder. This way the phone doesn't block my access to the radio or HVAC controls. I have been pretty happy with it.
@DavidSenn1
@DavidSenn1 6 жыл бұрын
Boost & Shutter I used the CD slot mount style in my Jetta. They work fine but I just wanted something more permanent and that wasn't in the way. I will say it eats into the leg room of the passenger a bit but not bad. I don't sit over there so not a big deal. I went through all the proclip options for my model year but didn't like any. My other option was to go with a 3d printed mount. There are a few on thingiverse for the Cobb which could be adapted to a phone.

Same happened to me when I stopped by a dealer and asked. They said no. I contacted the Internet Sales side of the dealer via Costco and was able to schedule a test drive. So maybe try and set up an appointment rather than just walking in off the street. The other option is that the CVT hasn't changed since the 2015 so if you just want to see how it runs you could do a carsoup search for a used one. I wanted my wife to see what one was like and didn't want to mess with the same dealer again. I found a used one at a BMW Dealer. We just walked in and they tossed me the keys and said have fun.
